Annual Candle Lighting Memorial Service—November 9, 2014

The tremendous support for Hospice of Laurens County never ceases to amaze me. Even with difficult economic times, monetary donations continue to come in, our Thrift Store donations are up, and the hours donated by our volunteers are unbelievable. These gifts of money, items for sale and time are significate to the success of our charitable hospice mission. As we look forward to growth in 2015, I encourage each of you to be an advocate for Hospice of Laurens County. Laurens County citizen continue to be surprised by the number of hospices doing business in our county. As a friend and supporter, remind those who may need hospice care, to ask for Hospice of Laurens County by name. It will be a GIFT to them during a very critical time in their life, and a GIFT to Hospice of Laurens County. Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Linda Linda Gault, Executive Director

A big thank you to Laurel Hill Baptist Church for hosting our annual Candle Lighting Memorial Service for the 10th consecutive year. Hospice of Laurens County presented Rev. Herbert Glenn and the entire church family a certificate of appreciation for our partnership over the years. More than 250 people attend the event to remember their loved ones lost this year.

Holiday Caregiving

Caregiving During Holidays and Special Occasions

Holidays and special occasions are meant to be joyful times that create lasting memories. Many people enjoy reuniting with family and friends to celebrate traditions during these times. However, for a person who is caring for a loved one with a life limiting illness, it can be challenging to balance caregiving responsibilities while preparing for an upcoming holiday. Here are a few tips to help caregivers and their loved ones find ways to get the most out of the holidays this year. Talk with your loved one about what the special occasion means

to them. An upcoming holiday could have a new meaning for some-one who is dealing with a terminal illness. Ask your loved one how they would like to celebrate, and then try to honor those wishes.

Adjust your expectations. Consider if an upcoming event may place

too much of a burden on you or your loved one. For example, caregiv-ers who traditionally host a celebration at their home may decide to invite fewer guest this year, consider a “pot luck” event, or not host the event at all.

Enjoy special moments. Try to focus on new traditions that have

been established, rather than dwelling on how the illness has changed a holiday or special occasion.

Give Thanks

It’s Never too Late to Thank a Veteran

Americans across the country celebrated Veterans Day on November 11, a special day to salute the men and women who have bravely served our country in the military. Honoring our nation’s Veterans includes supporting them throughout their entire lives, especially at the end.

On Tuesday, November 11, Hospice of Laurens County hosted a luncheon for Veterans in our community. More than 20 Veterans enjoyed homemade soup and cornbread with our Staff.

It surprises many Americans to learn that every day, 1,800 Veterans die. That’s more than 680,000 Veterans every year—or 25% of all the people who die in the country each year. If you know a Veteran who is in need of the special care hospice brings to people facing serious and life-limiting illness, please reach out and help them learn more about care options by vis-iting www.hospiceoflaurenscounty.com or by calling 864-833-6287.

Community Support

Many THANKS to the local business, families and churches who helped provide meals to the Hospice House during the transition of meal service from Bailey Manor to Laurens

County Memorial Hospital.

Heart of a Child

Children’s Bereavement

Jaime’s Tree House was born in the heart of one special child long before the first day camp was held in 2007. Jaime Reeder, who the camp is lovingly named for, touched each life she came into contact with. Jaime Reeder fought a rare childhood cancer and passed away twelve years prior to the naming of Jamie’s Tree House and the first grief camp held in her memory. Jaime’s Tree House is Hospice of Laurens County’s Children’s Bereavement Grief Program. This program begins by identifying children in need of grief support. Through the help of our local school systems and by staying in contact with the fami-lies of former Hospice patients we are able to identify children that have lost a signifi-cant person in their lives and that loss has proven difficult. Currently, Jaime’s Tree House Grief Camp is held each Spring. This years camp is scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2015. In addition to the day camp, we have begun grief workshops in our local schools. The workshops are 6-7 weeks and creates a time for a small group of students to come together and talk about their losses. There are many ways to support the children in our community through Jaime’s

Tree House. Here are just a few:

Volunteer to help with the day camp in April

Contact our office if you know of a child we can help

Donate much needed supplies for the day camp and workshops

Make a donation in someone’s honor or memory.

Provide funding to build an actual Tree House on the Hospice campus to host the day camps and future workshops.

Invite us to speak about Hospice and Jaime’s Tree House to your church, small group, organization, etc.
