“Behold, I Am With You Always Until The End of the Age”

When we hear the above in today’s Gospel reading Jesus wants us to remember this each and every day of our lives; on the good and difficult days. He wants us to be united in faith, charity and pray always as we all are committed to do God’s Will. Jesus wants all Christians to learn to pray together.

The Mass, An Act of Love Why We do What We Do At Mass

Entering the Church – We bless ourselves with holy water reminding us of our Baptism.

Genuflect or Bow – As we enter the pew and leave the Church as a sign of adoration because of Jesus’ presence in the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle (the red Sanctuary lamp is lit)

Standing – A sign of respect and honor, Sitting – The time to listen to what is being said.

Silence – We think and pray to God thanking Him for what He does for us and how much he loves us.

Kneeling and bowing – A sign of reverence, respect and adoration. We do the above gestures, which have meanings that enhance our participation at Mass. The family is often referred to as the domestic Church. Parents are the primary educators, the Religious Education Ministry is your support group. Children will see in their parents and family members the witness of their parents’ faith giving meaning to their lives. They, in turn, will look for that meaning in their own lives. The next time we feel it is necessary to comment about children’s behavior in Church it is suggested we stop, look around us and listen. Are we practicing what we teach? Reminders: The 7th and 8th grade classes for the Wednesday session 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. are filled. The Wednesday evening 7th & 8th grade session are available. The Thursday 7th grade session is available. Existing families in the Religious Education Program should register their child/children by May 31 to avoid paying a late charge of $40.00 after May 31. Families who will be registering a first grader or a newcomer to our Religious Education program need to include a copy of the child’s Baptismal certificate. Registration forms continued. . . .

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Ecclesiastes speaks of various appropriate times and seasons, beginning with “a time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant . . .” (3:2ff). Today’s readings allow us to add: a time to wait for God to act and time to act for God. In Acts the community enters into a period of waiting in prayer for the Holy Spirit to come and fulfill the promise Jesus made. In the Gospel, Jesus prays at the Last Supper, declaring that the time for action has come. His “hour,” the time when He will be lifted up, has arrived, and so He prays that the Father will give glory to Him so that He will give glory to the Father. In doing this, He will be able to give to eternal life now to those the Father has given Him, so that they know the Father and the One sent, Jesus. We move in two times zones: both waiting for the Spirit to come and acting to bring glory to the Father and the Son. We give this glory when we witness to our faith. How does your life call you to witness?

End-of-life decisions, for ourselves and for loved ones, are among the most challenging decisions we will ever face. Unfortunately, there is a growing movement in our nation to legalize assisted suicide. Proponents argue that assisted suicide is the compassionate option, but in reality, it gives up on patients during their most vulnerable moments instead of accompanying them. It is grounded in the idea that some lives are worth living more than others, as opposed to upholding the sanctity of all human life. It sends the mixed message that there are certain conditions under which it is acceptable to commit suicide. However, in the vast majority of cases, people who commit assisted suicide do so because they are dissatisfied with their quality of life, not because they are experiencing unmanageable pain. In this sense, assisted suicide is a direct threat to the elderly, the poor, the sick, and the disabled. As Catholics, we are called to oppose any efforts to legalize assisted suicide. We are called to love our fellow brothers and sisters and to offer assistance to all those who are suffering. Visit https://archny.org/assisted-suicide for more information. In New York, the “Medical Aid in Dying Act” (A.2383/S.3151) is the pending bill that would legalize assisted suicide. The court case Myers v. Schneiderman is also being heard by the New York State Court of Appeals. We encourage you to contact your state legislators and urge them to oppose assisted suicide legislation. We also encourage you to pray for our judges in the Myers v. Schneiderman case. Most of all, we invite you to reach out to those suffering in our community.
