Fr. Sam

St. Paul gives us an awesome power verse for the Solemnity of Pentecost: “Now

there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but

the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who

activates all of them in everyone (1 Cor 12: 4-6).” In this way, Paul explains to us

that the Holy Spirit of God uses all of us in different and distinct ways and enables us

to use our distinctiveness for God’s greater honor and glory, by the way in which we

are called to minister to those whom the Lord places along our life’s path. There is

no gift that is not needed; no gift that is too small or insignificant. The only sin would

be not to use the gifts that the Holy Spirit wants us to express. ---for all of our gifts are

beneficial for the spreading of the Kingdom of God! All of our gifts come from God

and are activated by God’s Holy Spirit when we need them. So it stands to reason

that part of our Christian vocation is to discern what are the gifts the Holy Spirit, of

which God wants us to make use, in order to help those who are in distress, inspire

those who are without hope, and bring others a foretaste of the immense love of

God for all sinners. We can think of our unique contribution as part of a tapestry

which the Lord designs to make God’s vision of a kingdom of justice, love and

peace come closer to fruition until it is at last completed by Christ when he returns to

bring about the definitive kingdom of God. Until that time arrives, may we each

strive to become sensitive to the promptings of

the Holy Spirit who is ever ready to help

us unpack the gifts that we have been given.

--- A pastoral pondering as we celebrate the

LIVING LITURGY™ SPIRITUALITY, CELEBRATION, AND CATECHESIS FOR SUNDAYS AND SOLEMNITIES 2020

The Spirit that descends upon the apostles

is described as a “strong driving wind” and

“tongues of fire.” Both wind and fire have

the ability to form, shape, and transform

matter. Today we gather to ask for this

transforming power of God to be poured

out upon us and upon all of creation. In

the Holy Spirit we receive everything we

need to carry out Jesus’ mission of love in

the world: to be the Body of Christ and to

build the kingdom of God.

T he Paschal Candle is extinguished

following the Mass on Pentecost

Sunday. It will be moved to

its rightful place near the

baptismal font where it is

displayed with due honour.

It will be used during the

celebration of Baptisms, at

which time the candle of

the newly baptized will be

lit from it. It will also be

used during funeral masses,

standing near the casket or

cremated remains

Once again we extend

a note of gratitude to

Lisa Mirabelli for her artistic

abilities in designing and

painting this year’s beautiful

Easter candle!

THEME: I HAVE A DREAM

I have a dream that one day there will be no more tragedy of wars between nations, wars which are nothing but power tussle between nations and leaders. I have a dream that one day all people of the earth will unite to form a community of nations assisted by the power of the Holy Spirit. I look forward to that day when there will be no enemies in our midst, enemies who treat

one another with hatred, a hatred, like a poisonous mineral, can eat into the very heart of religion. I have a dream that one day all the diversity of cultures will be joined together as one in the heart of the human race, not to be judged by its location on the globe but by its effect on character. Can this dream of mine, for a community of nations, become a reality? Yes, it can, provided we have the Holy Spirit assisting us. The Spirit of God achieved such a community on the day of Pentecost. When he came “like a strong driving wind, and tongues of fire rested on each of the apostles “ {Acts 2:2}, all barriers of nation and language were broken down by the fusing power of the Spirit, so that people who had gathered there from different lands “ heard the apostles speaking each in his own language “ {Acts 2:8}. Language has the power to divide and the power to unite, depending upon the spirit of those who use it. Those who use their language, influenced by the Spirit of God, can create an understanding community, others will only divide it or destroy it. The Spirit brought together not only the dispersed nations but also the confused disciples, so that they were immediately transformed into the Body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit can do the same today for the Church and our world today, especially in this unusual and uncertain pandemic times. But the Spirit of God needs you and I, his Church, to cooperate with him in the transformation of the world. It is not enough to have faith in the power of the Spirit, wherever there is genuine faith, it must blossom into works. We must first work to transform our own Churches into united, loving, forgiving and sharing communities. Our Parish must become truly the Body of Christ, in which all our individual gifts are put at the service of the community, in the belief that “ there are different gifts but the same Spirit, there are different ministries but the same Lord” {1Cor. 12:4}. Having thus set our own house in order, we then reach out beyond the narrow confines of our particular Churches. The words of Jesus, “ As the Father has sent me, so I send you” {Jn. 20:21} were directed towards us also. Therefore, as God’s people, we are bound to function as divine agents in the world, to break down the walls of pride and prejudice and of hatred and war, that still plague our families, cities and nations. We pray that the Spirit of God may baptise us with his grace, like early morning dew. To soothe and quieten our minds with his message of peace. To heal our pains and heal our world from this pandemic. May we be less occupied with things that divide us and more with those that we hold in common. To help us see ourselves as rays from the one sun and as streams flowing from one river. May we remain united to you Oh Holy Spirit of God and to one another. Spirit of God sweep the world out of the dusty corners of its apathy and breathe vitality into its struggle for justice and peace. Let your mighty fire freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes, consuming in its heat all that divides the human race. Touch our hearts with the shock of your coming and fire us with longing, to spend and be spent in the ways of love and service to humanity, until my dream of a united world comes true. Amen.

The Spirit gave birth to the Church and the Church grows in the power of the Spirit. The Church is not just a building made of cement, sand, stone and water, but primarily an assembly of people whose faith in Jesus has brought them together. As we yield to the person and presence of the Holy Spirit, the Church grows, but when we stifle the action of the Holy Spirit, the Church shrinks. In the face of the innumerable challenges that beset our world, the Church needs an on-going Pentecost – an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon willing men and women, old and young, who constitute the Body of Christ – to renew the face of the earth. May that be our desire, our prayer and quest on this special day.
