“ ...whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” June 9-10, 2018!"

Gospel Reading Mark 3:20-35!

Background on the Gospel Reading

Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.

In the section of the Gospel just before these verses, Jesus calls his Twelve Apostles. Now he performs his first exorcism. It is told within the context of conflict with his family.!

A crowd so large has gathered that Jesus and his disciples are not even able to eat their bread. His family comes to take him away because they think he is beside himself. And the scribes think he is possessed by the devil. Jesus points out to them the absurdity of their thinking that he uses the devil to cast out demons. In fact, it is Jesus who ties up the strong man, Beelzebub, and overcomes him.!

He concludes with a brief saying about the forgiveness of sins. All sin can be forgiven except for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. It’s not known exactly what he means by this. It could be that the only sin that can’t be forgiven is the one that cuts you off from the source of forgiveness, the Holy Spirit.!

Mark then brings Jesus’ family back into the picture. They are not presented in a critical light but are just trying to see him. This gives Jesus the opportunity to point out that family for him is not based on blood.

Visitor this Weekend at MHR !!

Please welcome to our parish Sr. Mary Fisher of the Missionary Sisters for Africa

The Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa began in 1903 in Ugan-da when Mother Kevin and 5 companions took the risk to leave coun-try, family, and friends to travel to Africa. Inspired by her spirit and leadership, schools, hospitals, clinics, and training institutes were established in Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zim-babwe, and South Africa. Mother Kevin pioneered the education of African women as religious sisters, nurses, midwives, and teachers. Today work is being done on issues of trafficking of women and children, care of street chil-dren, the poor and destitute, and involvement in prison ministry. Sr. Mary Fisher is a member of the Missionary Sisters for Africa. After 41 years of ministry in Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa, Sr. Mary was asked to return to the States to help raise funds for the Congregation. For 31 years Sr. Mary was involved in a spiritu-al ministry offering courses on prayer, discernment, spiritual growth, as well as being available for a ministry offering retreats and spiritual direction. We are pleased to have Sister Mary with us this weekend!

In Loving Memory

A very generous monetary gift was given to MHR by Stan Adams in memory and in honor of his mother Julia Adams, a long time, faith-ful parishioner of ours, who passed away in March. The cross (pictured at left) was fund-ed by a portion of this donation. The cross was formerly on the glass cupola on top of the church, but it was not sustainable in that spot. With the help of Fr. Piotr and MHR parish-ioners Stan Zieja, Leonard Danylieko, and Ed Smola, the cross was erected on the Parish Cen-ter exterior wall facing Russell Street. As you can see from the second picture, the cross lights up, displaying our Catholic presence in the community. Shown in vibrant blue, the cross actually is illumined by several different colors, in turn. Thank you, Stan Adams!

Memorial Day Mass at Holy Rosary Cemetery
