FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Welcome to Week 5! It was wonderful to arrive back at school today and hear about how exceptionally our zone swimming team represented our school at the Southern Riverina Carnival on Friday. Thank you Miss Lavis for your organisation, and Margot Pitzen for your encouragement, support and training in the community. Holbrook’s outstanding community spirit continues to help our local children thrive. Principals’ Induction Conference Evidence around the world shows that investing in leadership at all phases of a school leader’s career will make a substantial difference to the quality of teaching, and therefore the quality of student learning, in our school. From the 19-21 February, I had the pleasure of attending the Principal Induction Conference in Sydney, delivered by the Department of Education School Leadership Institute. This conference provided engaging, relevant and significant professional learning. This included leading high quality teaching and learning across the school, enhancing student wellbeing strategies, and ensuring that in our school community every child is known, valued and cared for. I was reminded of the importance of modelling lifelong learning to my staff and students. Conferences of this nature enable me to focus on quality teaching and leadership practices that have the greatest impact on teacher learning and therefore the outcomes of our students. School Chaplaincy Interviews Thank you to Prue Pincott (community representative) and Janice Mitchell (Regional Chaplaincy Coordinator-Generate Ministries) for their support in the School Chaplaincy interview process today. We hope to be able to provide more information soon. TERM 1, WEEK 5 2020 TERM 1, WEEK 6 2020 Mon 24 Feb Mon 2 Mar Tue 25 Feb Tue 3 Mar • School Clean Up Day Wed 26 Feb Wed 4 Mar Thu 27 Feb • Riv. Essential Assessment – Numeracy – As mentioned at our parent information sessions, we are now using Essential Assessment, an online assessment platform for numeracy. Students are currently completing pre-tests to establish what they know and what they still need to learn for each of the three mathematics strands – Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Once students complete the pre-tests, the program generates an individualised learning plan for each child. In combination with targeted teacher-led lessons, the students can also access the Sunset Maths section of the program from home to improve their knowledge and skills. Each child will also complete mid-year and end of year assessments which will improve the quality of our reporting to parents and measure the impact of our numeracy teaching programs. Our aim is to ensure every child achieves their expected growth. Student Representative Council (SRC) – Recently, each home class held a class meeting to discuss what is going well and what can be improved in both the classroom and playground environments. As part of this student voice initiative, which promotes wellbeing, learning and continual improvement, students from each home class were chosen to be part of the SRC. Congratulations to the students who were chosen for Semester 1. K – Arabella Harbison and Orlando White

1 – Fergus Glass and Cess Lieschke

2 – Grace Bennetts and William Finlay 3/4 – Jasper Hartwich and Zander Maher

4/5 – Mia Boers and Oscar King 5/6 –Cooper Glass, Eli Toll and Annie Triggs

Tennis – Congratulations to Annie Triggs who was selected as a reserve for the Southern Riverina Tennis team. Professional Learning – Autism Spectrum Disorder – This Friday, Mrs Pargeter and Miss Hemphill will be travelling to Wagga Wagga for a workshop with Sue Larkey. Sue is a highly qualified educator who has taught students with autism spectrum disorder in mainstream and special schools. She combines practical experience with extensive research, having completed a Masters in Special Education and currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education. Sue has authored many books on autism spectrum disorders and is unashamedly passionate about her mission to inspire and support parents and educators to Make it a Success. Sporting Trials and Knockouts – This time of year is extremely busy with a variety of sporting trials, knockouts and carnivals taking place. The Southern Riverina AFL trials will be held at Culcairn next Thursday 5 March. Trials will take place Monday and Tuesday this week for students in Years 4-6. The 5/6 Mortimer Shield (rugby league) gala day in Albury will take place next week on Friday 6 March. We have 13 players at this stage, but may look to combine with another school as in previous years. Notes for both excursions will be sent home in the next couple of days.

NAPLAN dates – Holbrook Public School students in Years 3 and 5 will sit the paper version of the NAPLAN tests on 12-14 May (Term 2, Week 3). All schools will need to transition to the online version of the test by 2021. We believe that the addition of other online assessments in 2020 will support students in this transition.

SR SWIMMING CARNIVAL REPORT Congratulations to the 25 students who attended the Southern Riverina swimming carnival last Friday at the Lavington Swim Centre. The students displayed excellent sportsmanship and participated well throughout the day. A huge thank you to the parents who came to support the students. It was wonderful to hear you all cheering for each other. A huge thank to Margot Pitzen for training the students before the carnival. It is very much appreciated. Our students gave their best all day, many achieving personal bests and a number of students gaining first, second or third place in their events.

Well done to all students. Chrissy Lavis

HOLBROOK PUBLIC SCHOOL DANCE GROUP Last fortnight, 27 students from Holbrook Public School signed up to be part of the Holbrook Dance Group. Over the next few weeks, I will be working together with the students to choreograph our routine ready for upcoming events during Terms 2 and 3. Students will be encouraged to commit themselves to the group and attend weekly dance rehearsals. I look forward to sharing these homegrown routines with the community later in the year.

SCHOOL CLEAN-UP DAY Holbrook Public School will be holding our Clean Up Schools Day during the morning of Tuesday, 3 March. The Clean Up Australia Day Council has supplied us with a small amount of gloves and bags for use on the day, but we would appreciate it if students who have gardening gloves could bring them along to school for use on the day. This will ensure that there are sufficient gloves for students to participate. Leanne Bedggood Co-ordinator
