Birrarung Marr is a strategic location. Besides having major functional structures such as the CBD and MCG Sports Ground, being just a close walking distance from the site, Birrarung Marr is also connected to Fiz-tory Residential Area and Flinder Street Transportation Hub. It is a tran-sitional pathway connecting a variety of crucial functions within the city.

Being a site of inspiration, Birrarung Mar has always been a location for the holding of many festivals and art exhibitions. Complementing that with the surrounding magnificent scenery,

Docklands have been developing rapidly in the recents decades, apartments, high rise offices, shopping mall, factory outlets, etc are built. Construction sites are always visible in context. I would say docklands is developing too fast. It seems to be in a chaos and money-driving developers are fighting for nominal gain.

Meditation - rethinking - is needed. In this project, I am proposing a meditation method from the east - buddhism and shitoism - ZEN is the relized form of meditation, in the attainment of enlightenment.

Docklands has always been a busy place, A Public space for people to relax and meditate is the best way to promote a healthier life style.

In the proposed zen tower, local weather conditions are used as an agent to enhance the quality of meditation. From Public, to highly enclosure, then to moderate enclosure, finally to Extrevme exposure.

Meditation Space

This section of the tower is focus on NOTHINGNESS & EMPTINESS.

The intention is to block Users from interacting with the envrionemnt and weather condition, so one could focus on meditation.

A contrast is made between extreme Enclosure in this space and once get out of the spaces, the re-encounter to the envrionment may achieve the ideology of zen meditation.

3rd, 4th & 5th Floors are about water.

Water is important in zen meditation. as one submurged into the water, surrounding noise and weather con-dition will be isolated.

In most religion, water has the ability to purify. In nowadays busy working life, a swimming pool will be a great retreat for office workers and city dwellers. amazing view are captured in these section of the tower.

Calmness is achieved as sunlight illuminate the space indirectly using the swimming pool and water feature as a buffer, as well as a slit in the ceiling to let sunlight relect into the space through the back wall. SWIMMING POOL

Meditation space capturing view of The Bridge and Docklands

6th & 7th Floor gives an open rooftop to the ZEN TOWER, It is about openness.

Visitors are totally expose to the weather environment (Especially SunLight + Heat). This is the final stage of the zen journey. Form Nothingness, to calmness, and finally to Openness.

The Rooftop is featuring a Stair to nowhere. As ZEN believe that human body is just a container of our soul, if we want immortality, we have to overcome our human limitation, the body is a boundary for one to achieve ultimate zen.

Also, Meditation spaces are highly opened, capturing most sunlight and views.

Ambiguity

Appreciate by involving

In response to the idea, there are a few strategies in designing.1 ambiguous oor levels2 ambiguous space between front of house and back of house3 ambiguous journey experience

Another idea is that I believe appreciating a piece of art should involving understand and learning about the artwork. In the theatre design, I highly promote the connection between the back of house and the front of house, inteactive areas could be used as education workshop, teaching youngsters to understand theatre. I hope the design could be a factory of promoting theatre in Melbourne.ART IS ABOUT DOING!
