Arts1273 Magical Prague, the Crown of Bohemia - Part I
Magical Prague, the crown of Bohemia, city of a hundred spires, escaped the ravages of World War II almost unscathed.
In two lectures, we will discover its one thousand year history not only through its architectural treasures from the early Middle Ages, through the Renaissance and Baroque periods to
the stunning Art Nouveau buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also its literature, art and music. Often, our impressions and memories of cities and landscapes are formed by the artistic visions and creative genius of writers, artists and musicians whose legacy then has a transformative effect on our own impressions. The music of Mozart, Smetana and Dvořák fills Prague’s concert halls and baroque churches. Writers, such as Rilke, Kafka, Ivan Klima and Vaclav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic, all have been inspired by this extraordinary city – which, I hope, enhances your discovery and understanding of one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

1275 A Virtual Tour through our National Gallery: Venetian Renaissance Art
Our National Gallery of Art in Washington DC owns some of the most important masterpieces of the Venetian Renaissance
that can be seen outside of Venice. In this virtual tour, we will look in depth at some of the works of the “Founding Father” of the Venetian Renaissance Giovanni Bellini; several pictures by the rare artist Giorgione; the native-born Venetian genius (and extraordinarily original) Lorenzo Lotto, who spent most of his career outside the City of the Lagoon; the master story-teller Carpaccio; the long-lived Titian who dominated the 16th century in Venice as did
his rival Michelangelo in Rome, and finally Tintoretto, currently the focus of a major exhibition at the Gallery.

1276 Fauvism: Painting in Search of Light and ColorFauvism was a return to an art of immediate sensations.
Like Impressionism it was a movement that favored pure painting, the artist’s spontaneous response to the visible world. The “wild beasts” as they were known--Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck, Dufy, Braque and many others—shocked Paris with their bright hues and novel compositions. They ignited an explosion ca. of 1904. By 1908 most of them had gone separate ways. In these brief but intense years, the movement produced what art historian John Elderfield called “some of the most sublime
as well as expressive painting of this [the 20th] century.” In this lecture we will follow the friendships that bound these artists and discuss their individual achievements.

1277 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the Nineteenth Century - Part I
These lectures will introduce Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), one of the most important Post-Impressionists.
The lecture will cover his most significant paintings and posters and how they reflected the reality of the nineteenth-century city. Toulouse-Lautrec’s style took its inspiration from such diverse sources as political caricature, Japanese prints and the works of Edgar Degas. The artist’s focus was on modernity. During the latter part of the nineteenth century, the newly renovated Paris has a thriving nightlife. The thoroughly modern and somewhat
scandalous cabarets and café-concerts attracted the new urban denizens. At the Moulin Rouge and Chat Noir shop girls and prostitutes mingled freely with the bohemian artists and the fashionable glitterati. These characters became Toulouse-Lautrec’s inspirations and models. His posters that featured the new celebrities of the Belle Époque were art as well as advertisements.

1279 Forgotten Impressionists: A New Look and Revelations
Have you heard of John H. Twachtman? Or Willard Metcalf? How about Thomas Dewing? Or Frank Benson? Perhaps you do
know Childe Hassam (a favorite of Oprah Winfrey) or William Merritt Chase, generally the most famous of the group. All of them were members of the American Impressionists or what was called
The Ten, formed in 1898. Yet, these artists, even Hassam and Chase, have been overshadowed by their counterparts, the French Impressionists such as Monet, Renoir, and Degas. This presentation will focus on the colorful and light-filled works of our own Impressionist artists, who painted predominantly in the northeastern part of the United States: from the gently rolling countryside of Connecticut to the green hillsides and mountains of Vermont to the brilliant skies of the coastal islands off of Maine, so beautiful on a summer day.

1280 Georgia O’Keeffe & Her Iconic Flowers— An In-Depth View
Have you ever seen Georgia O’Keeffe’s art book of 100 flowers---a brilliant display of what is considered her most popular
subject? The American artist once wrote that “no one sees a flower, really; it is so small.” So she spent her artistic career opening up our eyes to their color and beauty.
This class will offer an in-depth view of some of O’Keeffe’s most iconic flowers, including majestic red poppies, sensuous calla lilies and the towering sunflowers of the Southwest, among others. In addition, O’Keeffe’s biography and creative development will also be discussed, from her days living in New York City (and where she first exhibited her unforgettable flowers), her summers spent at Lake George in the Adirondacks, and her final years surrounded by the inspiring landscape of Ghost Ranch near Santa Fe.

General Topics1301 Unclutter, Declutter, Downsize Your Home and Stress: Learn Ways to Manage the Transition
Are you overwhelmed by the thought of decluttering, downsizing and moving a home full of memories? The
decision to downsize is far more than just the sale of the big house and a move to a smaller living space. While every other sale and purchase has been a move up, this move is letting go. Giving up of possessions, memories and the familiar is
often the hardest part of the downsize transition. Lori James and Theresa Taylor are two of the best in their fields to help you with this task. They will be speaking about strategies, processes and plans that will help minimize the stress when you are downsizing. Join us in this discussion.

1302 What Type of Safari is Right For You?Rick will compare and contrast the variable attributes of
three types of safaris in which he has participated. The three safaris include a package tour from a major tour provider, a private safari arranged by Rick and a 10-day mobile tented camping experience in the “bush.” Attributes discussed include
required flights, transportation on the safari, lodging, meals, activities, physical (agility) requirements and costs. All aspects will be compared via discussion, pictures and in some cases videos from the actual safaris in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. If you’ve been thinking about going on safari or are just interested in the idea, this presentation is for you.

1303 Our National Mall The National Mall is in the news almost daily — First
Amendment demonstrations, museum exhibition openings, celebrations such as the Cherry Blossom Festival, but also contentious debates over proposed new memorials and museums. Is this public space still evolving as our landscape symbol of American democracy? Or is it, as Congress declared in 2003,
a “completed” work of civic art? In this talk, we’ll look back in history: to the original design for the capital and the Mall in the 1791 L’Enfant Plan; the Mall’s chaotic evolution in the 19th century; the 1902 McMillan Commission Plan that revived but also revised – some say for the worse -- L’Enfant’s vision; the proliferation of museums and memorials, and public activities of all kinds, throughout the 20th century and beyond. What does the Mall say about us as a country, a democracy? If not complete, what might the future hold?

1305 Brain Health as You Age Have you ever spent 10 minutes looking for your reading
glasses, and they were on the top of your head? Or, have you walked into a room and forgotten why you went there? Where are your car keys? What’s normal aging? When should you be concerned? Is there anything you can do to maintain your brain health as you age? Are you at risk for cognitive impairment? What can you do if there’s a problem? Brain Health as You Age provides useful, achievable actions you can take to reduce your risk of brain function decline,

1306 Media in the Age of Trump President Trump has altered the basic rules of engagement
between the White House and the press corps. His constant fabrications, combined with his steadfast refusal to correct his errors or apologize for them, means journalists have to be more vigilant and aggressive than ever in
covering the president and holding him accountable. But aggressiveness, no matter how justified, can lead to mistakes that give the president ammunition to use in his anti-media crusade. This class will be taught by Steve Roberts, who spent 25 years at the New York Times, including a stint as White House correspondent during the Reagan Administration, and now teaches courses in media ethics and politics at George Washington University.

1307 The Medical Marijuana Guide Does the word marijuana sound more like an illegal
substance than a therapeutic option? Dr. Patricia Frye explains the origins of why marijuana has been systematically vilified, how marijuana interacts within our own biologic systems, and how you as a patient can use her book, The Medical Marijuana Guide, as a resource to help understand that marijuana can be a part
of a successful health care plan. Dr. Frye shares her medical marijuana experiences by using actual patient stories, recipes, tips and tricks. She also shares how she diagnoses patients to determine if cannabis can help them and what form of the medicine may be best for their situation: vaporization, edibles, liquid, topical oil, or capsules.

1308 T.S. Eliot’s Great Modernist Poem: The Waste Land - Part I
In list after list by prominent scholars, T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land is identified as the most important poem of the
twentieth-century. An intrinsically great poem unlike any written before, its experimentalism is in service of its representation of the modernist world as fragmented and sterile. Writers of the time and throughout the century have been widely influenced by this poem, alluding to it in their own
works. This long poem is, however, notoriously difficult, and readers often abandon it in frustration. Ironically, frustration is one of the responses that Eliot purposely elicits. However, with appropriate guidance the reader can move through frustration to understanding and appreciation. I invite you to walk with me through this singularly important poem as we explore its methodologies and meanings. If you choose, you may read the poem before our first meeting, but only if you promise to ignore the enormous number of editorial footnotes, and only if you promise not to be so daunted by the poem that you decide to skip our sessions!

1312 U.S. Intelligence: What is it? What Does it Do? And How Did it Start? - Part I
For many Americans, the word “intelligence” evokes the unknown: mysterious, shadowy activities involving
spies, or a bewildering array of organizations, or classified analysis seen only by officials with clearances. How can ordinary citizens learn about intelligence? Join us in a two-part series taught by former CIA officer and
historian Nicholas Dujmovic, who now enlightens students at Catholic University as the Director of its Intelligence Studies Program. Dr. Dujmovic will first outline the elements of intelligence and describe how these missions are divided (and often shared) between the 17 agencies that comprise the U.S. Intelligence Community. With that background, he will then relate how the seeds of modern U.S. intelligence were planted by President Franklin Roosevelt and were developed by his successor, Harry Truman. We will discover that the concept of “central intelligence” was considered by many Americans to be unnecessary, dangerous, or downright un-American. Yet, “central intelligence” happened because of two historical events: the Pearl Harbor attack and the onset of the Cold War. Class participants are welcome to question whether past and current justifications for intelligence organizations and their activities are warranted.

1313 The Art of Investing in Art Do you own any art? Have you thought of buying
art? Have you contemplated selling art? In this class we will help you understand the art market and how to buy and sell art in all price ranges. We will examine trends and analyze whether art is a good investment and how to decide what art is best suited for investing vs. simply acquiring for enjoyment. If investing is your goal than what criteria should you use in order to decide what to buy? We will look into the nuances of the art market in regard to how to find the art you want
and how to get the best prices. We will delve into how to get the best return when you sell your art, how to deal with online resources, art galleries and auction houses. If you are thinking of making a donation of an artwork or collection, we will look into how to approach museums or other potential recipients and how to maximize the tax benefit. We will also examine estate planning in regard to how to best pass along your art collection to your heirs. We will also take a look at what a collector can do if they find out that they have a fake, forgery, or stolen artwork in their collection. Finally, we will discuss the role of insurance, appraisers and authentication of your art and collections.

1314 Antisemitism in America: An Old Villain in New Clothes?
American Jews have often felt that they inhabit a near-promised land, where the evils of anti-Jewish rhetoric and
violent acts are merely distant memories from the “old world”. Recent events, however, have caused many people both inside and outside the Jewish community to question the security of the largest and most successful Diaspora population. Is this current climate a new, more dangerous “normal”
for Jews in America? Will synagogues and Jewish schools and community centers become fortresses? Should Jews in the “land of the free” camouflage their ethnic and religious affiliations in the interests of safety, or can they still wear their identities openly and proudly? We will examine the history and legacy of antisemitism in America, identifying themes that have endured over time, and those that appear to be new threats. There are no definitive answers, but a more educated approach may help us to formulate appropriate responses – for the benefit of all Americans.

1317 New Technology Saving Endangered WildlifeFighting Africa’s illegal poaching trade is difficult and
dangerous; saving the lives of animals from poachers is even harder. The world’s overall population of African elephants drops by one animal every 15 minutes. From a peak population of more than two million, the last 100,000 African
forest elephants alive today are on track to be eliminated by poaching for ivory and bush meat within the next decade. Staff limitations at Africa’s national parks make it all the more difficult to catch poachers. This virtual event will focus on the technology that RESOLVE, an NGO has developed with INTEL support to detect poachers before they kill. The use of artificial intelligence and real-time inference on the cameras can save wildlife. In the first 15 months that prototype TrailGuard cameras were installed in a reserve on the western border of Serengeti National Park, they assisted in the capture of members from more than 20 gangs of poachers.

1319 Social Class and The MoviesMovies from the 1930’s to the 1970’s told stories with a
beginning, a middle, and an end, whose narratives were of human love, murder, ambition and loss of innocence. However, running parallel with movie plots were subtle messages of social class distinctions and aspirations. We will examine several movies to explore these underlying currents that reflected social values and prejudices in popular culture of those times. Racial tensions, ethnic identity, inter-generational conflict, and the growing role of the media in everyday life, were issues then
and remain key issues today. Along with the seriousness of these themes, there was a major flourishing of popular culture focusing, above all, on entertainment and enjoyment. Some of the movies selected are: A Place in the Sun, High Society, Midnight Cowboy, Imitation of life (1934 version), and On the Waterfront, among others. We will also look at movie posters and film clips as well as a documentary shown in schools.

1320 Westerns: From John Wayne to Randolph Scott, Clint Eastwood & Beyond
From The Great Train Robbery (1903) to The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), the Western has been a popular genre of
American film. In movies like Stagecoach (1939), My Darling Clementine (1946) and Rio Bravo (1959), John Ford, Howard Hawks and John Wayne helped shape the myth of the American West. When “The Duke” was busy filming perhaps the greatest Western of all time, The Searchers (1956), he personally recommended Randolph Scott to replace him in Seven Men from Now (1956). The Western was losing steam by
the early ‘60s, when Italian director Sergio Leone hired former TV cowboy Clint Eastwood to star in A Fistful of Dollars (1964), serving “Spaghetti Westerns” to American audiences. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Wild Bunch (1969) are knowing homages and deconstructions of the classic Western. So return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear . . .

1321 Both Sides Now: Legal Disputes, Constitutional Freedoms, and American Jewish Advocacy
The extent of Jewish participation in the American political process far outweighs the relative number of Jews
in the population. Yet, the contemporary activism of Jews as elected officials, leaders of political organizations, activists, and outspoken journalists is consistent with a tradition of civic involvement from the
earliest days of Jewish settlement in America. Although certain generalizations can be made about the political behavior of most American Jews – certainly for the past century – there is also a surprising degree of variety and complexity. This lecture focuses on the watershed politics of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, from labor strikes to landmark cases about free speech and freedom of religion, and the struggles for minority and women’s rights. Ultimately, we find that by looking at the involvement of one ethnic/religious group on both sides of the issues, we also plumb the depths of what it means to be an American.

1322 Tough Cases: Judges Tell the Stories of Some of the Hardest Decisions They’ve Ever Made
Trial Judges Tell the Stories of Some of the Hardest Decisions They’ve Ever Made. Judge Russell F. Canan and
Judge Frederick H. Weisberg are co-editors and contributing authors to Tough Cases, a collection of thirteen stories written by trial judges from around the country about their hardest cases. In addition to Judge Canan’s and Judge Weisberg’s challenging cases in the Superior Court, some of the cases received international attention: the Scooter Libby case by Judge Reggie Walton, the Elián González case in which
Judge Jennifer Bailey had to decide whether to return a seven-year-old boy to his father in Cuba after his mother drowned trying to bring the child to the United States, and the Terri Schiavo case in which Judge George Greer had to decide whether to withdraw life support from a woman in a vegetative state over the objections of her parents. Tough Cases demystifies judicial decision making and gives the reader a ringside seat as to how trial judges wrestle with their most challenging cases.

1331 The Soul of Russia - Part I What is Russia and what is “Russianness”? What defines
the soul--steeped in its own forms of spirituality--of this vast country? How might we understand Russia’s re-emergence as a world power--and as a challenge to peace and stability in various places across the globe--only a few decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union? This pair of slide-illustrated lectures will propose answers to these questions
by considering Russia and its place in the world from a number of angles. The morning session will consider where and when “Russia” came into being, and offer a discussion of what “Russia” means, in terms of history, religious identity, and language and literature. The afternoon session will tie Russian spirituality and secularism to issues raised in Russian art, music, dance--and film, both serious and comic--before coming full circle to history as it spills into our own era. Musicals are populated by a lot of bad characters often they are funny, and often they created major character challenges for the protagonists. Some are really good people but they behave badly- think about Professor Harold Hill in “The Music Man” or Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady”. There are many others from Miss Hannigan in “Annie” to the Sharks and Jets in West Side Story. Let’s examine the good bad, and the very bad that create the memorable plots in Broadway Musicals.

1337 Schmidt & JonesJones & Schmidt? Who? If you can’t identify them, you’re
not alone. In a list of the top 50 Broadway composers of all time, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt are not even listed. Compared with the legendary composer-lyricist teams we’ve already examined in this series of classes on American musical theater, Rodgers & Hart, Lerner & Loewe, Bock & Harnick--Jones
& Schmidt are often overlooked. Yet, they deserve a rehearing. They produced three outstanding shows: The Fantastiks, the longest running musical in history, 110 in the Shade, and I Do, I Do. We’ll hear selections from these three Broadway classic shows as well as from some of their other shows, Celebration, Philemon, Grover’s Corners, and Roadside. Their scores have been described by musical theater scholar Thomas Hischak as “highly lyrical, often very simple in melody, and usually poetic and sincere in the lyrics.”
