Student’s Voice: Dear Parents and Caregivers Hi my name is Bethany. I am a Year 6 at HPS. I’ve been asked, “What makes HPS special”? Well, let me tell you. HPS is a growing school. We have new and exciting things such as the Kauri hubs, the student councillors, the peer mediators and our 3 values that guide how we think and behave as amazing citizens - Showing Kindness, Making Positive Choices, Challenging Ourselves. We’re a learning school too. We collaborate with other students, we communicate with each other, including our teachers, we create fun stuff like inquiry projects, and we investigate new learning. At the moment I’m investigating space, “What is really out there?” And friends. This is the best school to make new friends, to learn from each other and to be inspired by each other. I’m so glad that I’m an HPS kid. It’s the best school I’ve been to (I have actually only been to 1!) Many thanks Bethany Morgan Student Hillsborough Primary School

Our Travelwise Student Leaders have been really busy this term. In the first week, they were reminding drivers along Hillsborough Road to slow down and look out for our community. Then they had the difficult task of judging the poster competition. Then last week they went out in the afternoons and some mornings with the Belt On Phone Off message and also that It's Cool to Walk to School. They are an amazing team to work with who are proactive and reliable. Thank you Esther Henderson, Connor Stewart, Ella Menzies, Jack van Houts, Casey Ogilvy, Esther Ngahe and Iszak Stewart.

Young Leaders Day

Last Wednesday the Year 6 Student Councillors attended the Young Leaders Day. “National Young Leaders day was a great experience. It gave us a chance to understand what being a leader actually means. There was a series of speakers of all different ages who had to be leaders themselves. They shared stories about their past and told us that we can still make a difference even though we’re small. They told us not to give up on our dreams no

matter what others say. We brought NYLD badges not just so we can wear more bling but to remember the day as well as a reminder to us that we can change the world!”

Community Meeting Auckland Transport

Auckland Transport will be coming to a community meeting at Hillsborough Primary School Hall 7pm next Tuesday 22nd May to discuss the bus route they will be running shortly from Onehunga up Queenstown Road and along Carlton Street. This route: • Will operate 40,000+ buses per year along Carlton Street. • Run every 15 mins BOTH ways. • Replace existing speed humps with ‘bus-friendly’ devices. • Increase heavy traffic by 3%+. • Reduce on-street parking SIGNIFICANTLY If you want to know how Auckland Transport’s design proposal will: 1. Maintain current levels of safety for children walking to schools in the area? 2. Improve and encourage cycling along Carlton Street, alongside their high frequency bus service? 3. Improve the walkability of Carlton Street for the Hillsborough Community. 4. Negatively impact congestion to streets around Carlton Street? Over the past 5 years serious injuries and deaths have near doubled across the Auckland Transport network. (813 serious injuries and deaths in 2017) 70% of these in 50kmph zones with pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists disproportionally represented. Speed humps, like those along Carlton Street, have been responsible for up to 58% reduction in pedestrian injuries which is why the Hillsborough School bus and community campaigned for them. Auckland Transport will replace these humps with ‘bus-friendly’ devices. These do not moderate speeds for the 3%+ of heavy traffic being introduced along Carlton Street. Good road design: quality pathway system connected with safe crossing points is essential for safety. To date Auckland Transport proposals show no change to existing pathways or introduction of any additional safe crossing points. Existing road side islands will be left and cyclists and cars competing for road space at around 10+ points from Sunnyride to the school. Please come to this meeting if you have any questions for Auckland Transport.
