Page 3: HF/50MHz ALL MODE TRANSCEIVER - ICOM Canada

Icom and the renowned IC-756PRO series continue to make ham radio history:

• First 32-bit floating point DSP transceiver• First transceiver with customizable filter shapes. There were no optional filters to buy, for none were needed.• First mid-class HF transceiver with +30dBm-class third-order intercept point* • First amateur HF transceiver with a large TFT color LCD

For the new IC-756PROIII, Icom’s combined the cutting-edge receiver technology of the IC-7800 with the familiar ergonomics of the IC-756PROII.

Take your DXing to the next level with Icom’s IC-756PROIII.(*in the 14MHz band)

Legacy Continues to Grow

New receiver gives +30dBmthird-order intercept point*Using receiver design techniques intro-duced in the IC-7800, Icom’s engineeringteam focused on producing a distortion-free, high-dynamic-range. To achieve thisgoal, Icom used higher-grade componentsin vital receiver sections of the IC-756PROIII.* Under the condition of receive frequency 14.2MHz, input frequencies

14.3MHz and 14.4MHz, Pre-amp OFF, mode USB BW: 2.4kHz

Large inductorsThe IC-756PROIII uses large inductors in-stead of small coils in the bandpass filter(BPF) stage, because small coils sometimescause magnetic sat-uration in the BPFstage. Large induc-tors can handle bothstrong signals andweak signals withlower distortion.

Low-distortion BPF switchingThe BPF switching circuitry is one of thecritical points in a receiver where distortioncan be produced by strong out-of-band sig-nals. Distortion at this early receiver stage

then propagates throughout the remainingstages and cannot be removed by signalprocessing. The IC-756PROIII uses lowdistortion diodes with wide frequency char-acteristics that prevent formation of distor-tion components in the BPF stage.

Fundamental-type 64MHzroofing filterThe IC-756PROIII uses a fundamental-mode monolithic crystal filter for the roofingfilter. Although it’s more expensive thanovertone-mode filters, the fundamental-mode filter has a better shape factor and isless susceptible to intermodulation distor-tion under strong-signal conditions. This is the same15kHz crystal filterused in the IC-7800roofing filter circuit.

Two newly designed preamplifiersTo minimize distortion and maximize dy-namic range, the IC-756PROIII preampli-fiers use the same basic circuit design asthe IC-7800 preamplifiers. Preamp-1 is anoiseless feedback design, with push-pullamplifiers. This design has a high intercept

point and covers a wide frequency range.Preamp-2, which uses bipolar transistorsfor higher gain, is ideal when you use sep-arate low-efficiency receiving antennassuch as small loops or Beverages.

Real time spectrum scopewith mini scope functionThe real time spectrum scope is now an in-dispensable tool for top performing HF ra-dios. The IC-756PROIII’s spectrum scopeadds a mini scope function, as requestedby many PROII users. The mini scope al-lows you to monitor the scope screen whileyou use other function menus. For exam-ple, you can monitor the scope screeneven while you are changing the IF filtershape and passband width. The scoperange can be set in 4 steps ±12.5 kHz, ±25kHz, ±50 kHz and ±100 kHz, centered on

the receiving frequency. In addition, thespectrum scope has 3 attenuator levels(10dB, 20dB and 30dB).

Eight-channel RTTY TX memoryThe IC-756PROIII has 8 channels of RTTYtransmit memory. You can edit and send upto a 62 character message for each mem-ory channel without a PC or other externalunit*. The transmit memory is displayed onthe screen so you won’t send the wrongmessage. The built-in RTTY demodulatorand decoder allow you to check the callsignof the station on the air instantly. A PC orexternal unit is not also necessary. * When writing and

sending RTTY mes-

sages on site, a Termi-

nal Unit, TNC or PC

and dedicated soft-

ware is required.

Adjustable SSB transmit BWThe SSB transmit bandwidth is selectablefrom 100, 300 and 500Hz at the high-passedge, and 2500, 2700 and 2900Hz at thelow-pass edge respectively. 3 types of highand low combinations can be stored in thememory. In addition, the built-in audioequalizer has separate bass and treble ad-justments for a total of 121 combinations,so you can tone your voice up or down asyou want. With thisflexible DSP-basedwaveform shaping, you can tailor yourtransmit audio qual-ity to suit your oper-ating style.

32-bit floating point DSP & 24-bit AD/DA convertersThe heart of the IC-756PROIII is theproven combination of the 32-bit floatingpoint DSP and 24-bit AD/DA converters. This powerful combination supports manydigital processing features exclusive to theIC-756PROIII, which cannot be achievedwith traditional analog processors. The 24-bit AD/DA converter has an ultra-wide dy-namic range. Thereceiver delivers a dis-tortion-free, clearsound in any signalcondition, from a weaksignal to a strong fullpower station.

AGC loop managementThe digital IF filter and manual notch filterare included in the AGC loop driven by theDSP. This architecture completely elimi-nates “AGC pumping” caused by adjacentstrong signals out of the IF filter passband. In addition, programmable AGC time con-stants* (slow, medium, and fast presets) giveflexibility and speed needed for working thepile-ups. * Except FM mode.

Dual watchThe dual watch* function allows you to re-ceive 2 signals on the same band simulta-neously. You can listen to your favorite netwhile keeping an eye or ear on the DX sta-tion. The signal strength balance betweenthe main and sub frequencies is adjustablefrom the balance knob. (* Same band only)

Digital twin PBTDSP-based twin passband tuning (PBT)helps eliminate interference by changing theIF filter bandwidth and/or shifting the centerfrequency. With the digital IF filters, the PBTperformance allows you to cut away all theinterference and noise to hear the actualsignal. The LCD indicates the twin PBT con-ditions across the top of the screen.

Manual notch functionAn incredible 70dB of attenuation is at yourcommand with the manual notch. Eliminatestrong adjacent signals or beat tone noise, without reducing the performance of theAGC gain.

Sharp and soft filter shapes are selectable for SSB and CW mode

Select an appropriate filter shape that favors your operating style or band conditions.Independent SSB and CW filter gives you the flexibility.

SSB Sharp FilterThe perfect filter shape factor when sig-nal fidelity or pinpoint accuracy isneeded! A sharp slope from the filteredges gives full audio response whileeliminating any adjacent interference.

CW Sharp FilterThe “too good to be true” CW filter! Thesteep filter skirts — only 200Hz from the–6dB to the –60dB points — allow you tohear a weak CW signal that is sur-rounded by strong ones. DX hunters willhave to try thisone to really seethe magic of theSharp CW filter.

SSB Soft Filter The perfect filter shape factor when try-ing to pick out a weak signal! Therounded filter shape resembles a tradi-tional analog filter, by rolling off the highand low ends of the passband. Althoughmaintaining the steep filter skirt charac-teristics of a digital filter, the soft filter in-creases the signal-to-noise ratio of theintended signal.

CW Soft FilterRunning a pile-up has become easierwith the soft CW filter. By broadening thefilter skirt, the characteristics of the softfilter perform much like a mechanical fil-ter without the ringing.

Automatic notch function Eliminate annoying AM carriers, amplifier orradio tune up interference with a push of abutton. The automatic notch tracks 2 ormore interfering signals simultaneouslywithout intended signal loss or distortion.Very helpful on 80 and 160 meters.

Adjustable noise reductionThe 32-bit DSP processing power pro-duces real results by separating signalcomponents from the noise with the vari-able Noise Reduction. By suppressing thenoise components, an outstanding Signal-to-noise ratio is achieved, providing clear, clean audio in all modes without distortionof the target signal.

Adjustable noise blankerReduce annoying QRN from pulse-typenoise such as engine ignition systems andsparking appliance motors, with the fullyadjustable (101 steps) noise blanker.

Digital voice recorderThe Digital Voice Recorder (DVR) is a veryconvenient function for contests, DXpedi-tions and even normal operation. Recordyour callsign, CQ, or other station informa-tion into four memory locations. A total of90 seconds is available for the four memo-ries, with each memory channel being softpartitioned to allow custom recording sizes.A quick push of the front-panel DVR buttonallows you to record received signal into theR4 memory. The playback automaticallymutes the receiver for clear playback of theprevious 15 sec-onds of recordedaudio. The perfectfeature for thosecontest operatorswanting to improvetheir UBN.

CW memory keyerA must have feature for the CW operator, the internal memory keyer provides 4 mem-ories for programming station information, calling CQ and callsign. Each memory hasa capacity of 55 characters, as well asother time saving functions such as auto-

matic repeat, serial contest number auto-counter, and morse cut number functions.

Digital RF speech compressor The IC-756PROIII utilizes the 32-bit DSPfor the RF speech compressor providingthe maximum punch without the fuzzysound. Great for breaking through the noiseand hash to complete the QSO.

Highly stable transmitterFor a big, clear signal, the IC-756PROIIIuses two 2SC5125 transistors in the PAUnit. Along with superior IMD characteris-tics, these transistors have plenty of powerto allow for 100W full duty cycle operation.Advanced design considerations along withan aluminum, die-cast frame, and largecooling fan, help to stabilize the PA circuitproviding full duty cycle operation.

High stability crystal unitThe IC-756PROIII incorporates a high-sta-bility master oscillator, providing ±0.5ppm(–10ºC to +50ºC). A must for RTTY, SSTV orM A R Soperation.
