Why are there fences around graveyards? Because everyone’s dying to get in

Potholes are ‘unacceptable’MP Ben Chapman has criticised the state of the roads in Heswall. The Wirral South MP says that the number of potholes and poor road surfacing is

creating loads of problems for motorists. He said: “I drive to my offi ce in New Ferry, from my home in Heswall, via Baskervyle

Road, Well Lane and Brimstage Road. Their condition is of an unacceptable standard and, of course, they are only examples and everyone will have their own.“My constituents regularly inform me about potholes and tyre and suspension

damaging surfaces. These hazards also cause dangerous driving as motorists swerve to avoid them. People in Wirral South are also concerned about temporary repairs which prove only too temporary and probably lead to greater expense in the longer term. They are also bothered about the practice of skimming of surfaces which gives the appearance of repair but is only palliative.”Wirral Council insists that the state of the roads is ‘very good’.

Teens visit AfricaA GROUP of 25 teenagers from the Church of the Good Shepherd, in Heswall, fl ew out to Uganda to help communities with their building work. The group, along with 16 adults, visited communities in the rural South West of the

African country to do decorating and helping to provide clean water. The scheme has also been supported by St Peter’s CE Primary School, who raised

cash to pay for an adventure playground.

Have your say on neighbourhood spendingPEOPLE in Heswall will have another opportunity to decide how the council should spend money in their neighbourhood.Following the success of the ‘You Decide’ scheme in 2008, Wirral Council has

allocated an additional £220,000 to the borough’s 11 area forums. Each area forum has £20,000 to spend on extra council services, which can include

environmental improvements, security measures and youth and community activities. The Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Steve Foulkes said: “The money is already making

a real difference in lots of ways.”All Wirral residents are encouraged to complete the You Decide suggestion forms,

which can be completed on-line at www.wirral.gov.uk/youdecide and are also available from libraries, One Stop Shops and a number of health and community centres.

A tasty new arrival for your pet…For many years as a vet I have recommended the use of high qual-ity complete dry foods for healthy pet patients, naming leading top quality brands. From a dietary point of view I am still very happy with this advice. However, over the last year or so, such pet foods have suf-

fered horrendous price increases. Whilst this can be largely explained by costs of commodities, importation and the fall in value of the £, I personally find these huge increases very unacceptable. A second problem I perceive is that these ranges are now so vast

and diverse that they are now almost incomprehensible. As a vet I find that, so what chance do our pet owners have? We have foods for all different ages, so many differing flavours and base ingredients, ones for big dogs, little dogs, medium dogs, “natural diets”, GM free and organic

diets, diets including herbs and all kinds of additives. Even foods for specific breeds. Isn’t a dog a dog any more? Where, oh where, will it all end?So, in recent months, I have set

about creating an alternative! My aim was to source a high quality range of day to day “lifestage” pet foods, for dogs cats & rabbits, which was simple and easy to understand, and affordable, with a target that the selling prices should offer a very significant saving over the current “high end” products. Whilst it’s all kept me very busy indeed, I can definitely say that our Annie & Bramble have been very pleased with the taste of the ones they have tried out!More than that I really can’t

add.....but you may find an advert close by! Yum yum!

“Excellent service extremely pleased with the results. I came home expecting to clean up and it was cleaner than when I’d gone out!”

Mr M. Neston, Wirral

“Michael’s work was of good quality and was performed in a timely, efficient and courteous manner. He also cleaned up well after himself; a rare quality in plasterers.”

Mr P. Meols, Wirral

TIME served plasterer Mike Boyd has just started his new business.Mike does all aspects of plastering as well as rendering, pointing and artex removal.

His speciality that separates him from most of his plastering competitors is that he is also fully qualified in polished plaster and textured walls. Most companies

either offer just the standard plastering or just the polished plastering not many do both.

Mike and his wife Stephanie decided to set up MEB Plastering two months ago. With Mike’s plastering talents and Stephanie’s business experience

they hope to build a successful company over the coming years to cover the Wirral, Cheshire and Merseyside areas.

Said Mike: “We have done lots of research on our competitors pricing so therefore believe we can offer professional services at

affordable prices.“We will offer a 5% discount to customers who return to us for further work.”

The plaudits have already come in for Mike’s work with one Neston man saying: “Excellent service extremely

pleased with the results. I came home expecting to clean up and it was cleaner than when I’d gone out!”

Conservatives

We must rid ourselves of this unfair tunnel tax

“In addition to the cost pressures they share alongside other motorists, the Heswall motorist pays up to an additional £658 in tunnel tax”. Jeff explained that the cost for hardworking Heswall residents who need to use their vehicle for work, driving through one of the tunnels into Liverpool, pays an additional £658 in fees during a 47 week working year. “This is a significant and unfair burden they should not have to bear”, said Jeff. Jeff in setting out a personal commitment, should he be elected the next MP for Wirral South, accepted that the Conservatives could not at this time simply promise to lift the tolls on the Mersey tunnels “we know that the public finances are extremely tight, and we will not know the true extent of the position until we have access to the books after a General Election”. “That said, we need to have a strategy, and it seems entirely reasonable and realistic first step to stop any future rises in the toll fee”. “Once that is achieved, we should look in the medium term to look to make reductions in the toll charged, and moving in the longer term to the abolition of the toll altogether. This will also allow the toll over time, to become less significant in the running and upkeep of the Mersey tunnels.” “This is one of the local injustices that I would be determined to resolve as a local Wirral MP”.

What do you call an exploding monkey? Babboom!

The ‘Credit Crunch’ and the downturn in the economy has forced many businesses within our region to reduce or restructure their workforces and, in some extreme cases, businesses have had to cease trading altogether. A Compromise Agreement is a legally binding agreement between you and your employer. Such

agreements are used, in a variety of circumstances, to set out the terms and conditions reached when a contract of employment is terminated. As well as redundancy, these agreements can also be used to settle employment disputes and tribunal claims, and even when individuals leave their job by mutual agreement. The agreement you have been offered should provide a full breakdown of the payments that you are

going to receive from your employer. It should indicate whether the payment offered takes into account money in lieu of your notice period, and any holidays that may be owed to you. It should also give you an indication as to whether any tax or national insurance is payable on the sum being offered to you. In return for the payment, your employer will be attempting to exclude you from being able to bring

claims against them as a result of the termination of your employment, in a court or in the Employment Tribunal. It is crucially important for you to know that by entering into the agreement you will be signing away your right to bring a claim against your employer. It is normal for the agreement to also include a number of other specifi c clauses. Your employer may

look to include such things as a confi dentiality clause, a clause that you will not make any derogatory statements about them and possibly certain other restrictive covenants. If these clauses are included then you will not be able to discuss the terms of your package or your employer’s business affairs with any other party, you will not be allowed to make any derogatory comments about your employer and there may be restrictions on your future employment. As the Compromise Agreement has the effect of turning your redundancy package into a ‘full and fi nal’

settlement of any claims that you may have against your employer, it is crucial that you take legal advice on the contents of the it and whether it offers you suffi cient compensation for losing your job. The agreement should confi rm that your employer will pay your legal advisor’s fees for providing the advice.

The Employment Rights Act 1996 states that you must receive advice from someone who is professionally qualifi ed to advise you on the contents of the agreement and that whoever advises you must sign the agreement confi rming that you have received the necessary advice.

We will advise you upon the terms of the agreement and consider whether the payment you are being offered is higher or lower than what you are entitled to under the law. It is often the case that an employer will offer a higher redundancy payment in return for an employee entering into an agreement, as the protection offered by the agreement to the employer is extremely valuable to them.

For further information on Employment law, please contact Andrew Newton a solicitor at Maxwell Hodge on 0151 625 9154.

REDUNDANCYAND COMPROMISE AGREEMENTS‘I HAVE recently been selected for redundancy. I have been offered a redundancy payment but my employer has told me that I must sign a Compromise Agreement in order to get the full amount. What is a Compromise Agreement and will I benefi t from signing it?’

Where do you weigh whales? At a whaleway station

SOME GREAT BEACH READS!BY ELEANOR DAVIES, MANAGER OF LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Paperback Fiction: The Secret Scripture by Sebastien BarryRoseanne McNulty, nearly 100 years old, has lived in a mental hospital in Roscommon in Ireland for the main part of her life. The hospital is due to be closed, but Dr Grene, one of the psychiatrists, becomes fascinated by the story of his oldest patient. The novel tells of Roseanne’s past life, her unfortunate marriage and the ensuing tragedy which has befallen her. An incredibly moving and beautifully written story with a twist in the tail. Barry has the knack of writing stunning prose without a hint of sentimentality.

Autobiography: ‘Carra’ by Jamie CarragherJamie Carragher is the embodiment of everything that is important to Liverpool fans. Vice Captain, longest serving player and one of the few players to have made more than 500 appearances for the Reds, Carra epitomizes what a real sportsman should be- straightforward and uncompromising. In this book he takes us right through his career, revealing

what made him discard his Evertonian roots to become a fully fl edged Red, how he mended his wild ways to become a true professional and a multiple trophy-winner, and the truth about

a succession of managers in the hottest seat in football. A scouser through and through, Carra also has some forthright views on the England team, and tells why he rejected calls from both Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello to return to the international fold. A thoroughly honest book and a must for all Liverpool fans.

General Jottings: Home to Roost by Deborah DevonshireDeborah Devonshire is the youngest of the Mitford sisters and has defi nitely inherited their talent for writing. In this great little volume of her ramblings she touches on topics such as the unbelievable list of her husband’s titles and achievements, book signings and literary lunches, tiaras and buying clothes, President Kennedy’s inauguration and funeral and the fall and rise of the stately home. Wonderfully readable and very funny in parts.

Pull on your boots for marie curie cancer care!ON Sunday 6th September, Marie Curie Cancer Care will be holding its annual Thurstaston Walk for Hope. This popular circular walk will be led from Thurstaston Visitor Centre at 11am, with music provided by the Wirral Pipe Band. Marie Curie fundraiser Colette Byrne said: ‘This really is a beautiful walk, and

the money raised makes such a difference to the patients and their families. Our wonderful nurses simply couldn’t continue to provide the care they do without the kindness of the people taking part in this type of event’. This promises to be a great family day out and is the perfect opportunity to

remember loved ones. So pull on your walking boots and help raise much needed funds to support the Marie Curie Wirral Home Nursing service and the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool! For a registration form, please contact Colette in the fundraising department on 0151 801 1405 or [email protected] Money raised from this event will be used to support local Marie Curie Cancer
