WELL done to pupils of St Peter’s School, Lower
Heswall, who have put together a fantastic mosaic
to celebrate the building’s golden jubilee. The school
is having an open day this month and needs some
old pictures to adorn the walls. You can read more
on page 4.
People living in Forest Road certainly got into the
spirit of the Royal Wedding with a fabulous street
party. We’ve got pictures on pages 14 & 15.
Finally, good luck to Eleanor Davies, who has taken
over Lingham’s bookstore, on Telegraph Road. It
would be great to see a local business like Lingham’s
succeed, so please give her your support.

The rst piece of luggage on a carousel never belongs to anyone – George Roberts
This ummer st. Peter’ CE Prmary
School, Heswall celebrates its 50th
annverary.
The present school building was openedon the 10th April 1961, following the
bombing of the old school in the Second
World War. It destroyed part of the school
building and meant that the school was
temporarily housed in the Parish Hall
on Telegraph Road until the new school
was built. The history of the school
actually dates back to 1686 and was
formerly known as Heswall with Oldeld
CE Primary but became St. Peter’s CEPrimary when the new school was opened
in 1961. The school was ofcially opened
by the Lord Bishop of Chichester and the
Lord Bishop of Chester on the 19th May
1961.
Last month the Bishop of Birkenhead
visited St. Peter’s School, to begin
a series of events planned for the
summer term to mark the school’s 50th
anniversary in the current building.
Bishop Keith led a special service with
the whole school, before unveiling the
wonderful anniversary mosaic designed
by the pupils to mark this milestone.
A special open morning has beenplanned for Saturday 25th June between
10.30am and 1.30pm to enable past
pupils, parents, staff and friends of the
school to take a trip down memory lane!
Photographs, work and key information
from the last 50 years will be on display
in the hall. Pupils will be providing
guided tours to show how the school
has changed over the years. Visitors
will also be able to contribute their own personal memories in a special
anniversary book and perhaps bump into
old acquaintances!!! The school would
love to hear from anyone who has an
association with the school in the last 50
years and for them to share their special
memories and any old photographs that
they may have. These can either be
sent to the school ofce or e-mailed to

If it’s good, they’ll stop making it – Herbert Block

Six years previously the shop had been sold by itsoriginal ounder to new owners in the South o England who had incorporated it into a group o bookshops, all independent but with the account-ing done centrally. What had been a happy shopto work in had changed into a stressul one. Deal-ing with distant owners had its problems especially when they delayed payment and sometimes evendeaulted. Some o the local suppliers were badly
let down- something which the Linghams sta ound very painul as they had become their per-sonal riends. By Christmas 2010 it was obviousthe owners were in real fnancial trouble. Finally they admitted that they were going into liquida-tion and that several o the shops in the group were up or sale, including those in Heswall and West Kirby.
At the same time Peter, Eleanor’s husband,
had reached retirement age as an NHS hospitalspecialist and was looking or the right time toretire and invest the lump sum he would receive atretirement. It had crossed the Davieses’ minds thatthey might be able to buy one o the shops but
they had no experience o running a business andno idea how much the business might cost. Tey enquired about the selling price and realised that with Peter’s lump sum the idea o buying the shop was a real possibility.
Tere ollowed a great deal o heart searching, o scrutinising balance sheets, accounts, stock takingand getting advice rom everyone they could,
including local business people and o course their4 children. Te majority advice, especially romthe children, was not to touch it with an insulatedbarge pole.
‘Use it or lose it!’
So naturally (!) they ignored all the advice and
made an oer. Because Eleanor knew the Heswallshop well and it had the additional asset o amarvellous coee bar, they elt they could makeit viable (although no buyer had materialised orthe West Kirby shop, so very sadly this had toclose). Tere was more stress as oers were tradedand bartered. At one point the Davieses thoughtthey might have lost the purchase and it was thenthat they realised just how much they both really wanted to take on the challenge and the interest
which owning a book shop oered in early retire-ment.
So now its theirs. Tey have lots o plans or theuture and have already replaced the entire lighting

IT’s been a very busy year
for the 4th Heswall Sea
Scouts, which has seenthem travel far and wide
picking up awards along
the way, writes Catherine
James.
4th Heswall is a Royal Navy
Recognised Sea Scout Group, of
which there are only 101 in the
UK. We have an inspection every
18 months to make sure we areup to the Navy’s high standard
and we benet with funding from
the Royal Navy. One event we
enter is the National Sea Scout
Swimming Gala in February at
HMS Raleigh in Plymouth. This
year we and won the Gala, the rst time in
4th Heswall’s history !
The Cheshire Hike is held in April, and the
Scouts carry all of their food and campingequipment hiking over 12 miles each day.
Some years have had superb weather but
in they have had to contend with snow more
than once! Last year our scouts won all the
West Wirral trophies and the junior team
were overall hike winners. This year we won
the intermediate West Wirral Trophy.
We entered the West Wirral Scout Football
competition in June where we were runners
up, enabling us to go through to theMerseyside Final in Liverpool, after some
fantastic shots and even better defending,
we won a the trophy without conceding a
goal !

Our summer camp in July 210 had
us “going Dutch” when we travelled
to Holland and joined 12,000 other Scouts from around the World to
celebrate 100 years of Scouting in
Holland. The camp lasted for 12
nights and we took our own boats,
tents and cooking equipment.
October sees the Geoffrey Beavan
Challenge which takes place in
Cheshire. Many Scout groups
compete in canoeing, rie shooting,
mountain biking, a hike and rst aid.Our two teams came rst and second
in pouring rain.
Christmas brings about all hands on
deck for Scout Post from which the
group benets. We sell stamps, sort
and deliver post to various houses
in our area which all the boys (and
parents) enjoy.
Easter egg bingo was a family night
held in the St Peters Centre that
all enjoyed. After Easter the we will
enjoy sailing and canoeing twice a
week on the Marine Lake West Kirby
where we are lucky enough to have
our own boathouse.
The end of the summer season will
see our usual summer camp held
on the side of Lake Windermere.
Camping in the
forest, sailing,
hiking to mention
but a few activities
the scouts will
undertake during
the week.

I’ve just been reading the dictionary. Turns out the zebra did it – Steven Wright
Fiction: Smut by Alan Benett
A new book for Alan Bennett’s many fans. Written
much in the style of ‘Talking Heads’ this little
hardback book contains 2 ‘unseemly’ stories
concerning women in middle life. There is Mrs
Donaldson whom sex takes by surprise, and then
there’s Mrs Forbes , who‘s not surprised at all. Full
of the sort of gems we have come to expect from
Alan Bennett, wonderful quotes such as: “One
does not have to be in the forefront of the strugglefor women’s rights to nd Betty’s decision to marry
Graham deplorable. She wasn’t wholly infatuated,
though she liked the way he looked; but, so too
did he and that unfatuated her a bit.” Good fun,
very light but carefully written- would make a great
present.
Non-Fiction: The Churchills by Mary S Lovell
Of all Britain’s great families perhaps none has been so
overshadowed by the force of one member’s personality as the
Churchills. And yet in this vivid and brilliant dynasty- of which
Gladstone remarked, ‘There never was a Churchill from John of
Marlborough down who had either morals or principles’- theirs turns
out to be a narrative of epic breadth and drama. This biography is
a richly layered portrait of an extraordinary set of men and women-
grandly ambitious, regularly impecunious, impulsive, arrogant and
brave. Towering above the clan is the gure of Winston- his failures
and triumphs shown in a new and revealing context- ultimately our
‘greatest Briton’. By the author of ‘The Mitford Girls’.
Cookery: The Liverpool Cookbook: A Taste of the World in One City.
The Liverpool Cookbook has all the ingredients of a modern recipe book, but
serves up so much more, whetting the appetite with a real taste of the vibrancy that
has shaped the city as a diverse multi-cultural hotpot of avours. From the farmers
markets, generations of potted shrimpers, chocolatiers, and keepers of legendary
home-made ice cream recipes to Michelin star chefs and the feeders of princes and
prime ministers, there are dishes for every palate. Featuring exclusive recipes from
the city’s nest talents , the book explores how readers can get their hands on the
delicious home grown produce that provide the top restaurants to use in their own
dishes. Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of sources, this unique collection of
writing celebrates a world in one city, and is a must for anyone who loves food …andloves Liverpool

Together by Alan Ayckbourn, at Heswall Hall, 8pm.
A comedy in two acts, Living Together is the nal part of Alan Ayckbourn’s trilogy known
as The Norman Conquests. Annie, the Cinderella of the family, lives at home looking
after her mother. Reg, her brother and his wife Sarah come to stay for a weekend so
that Annie may go away for a “rest”. The general idea is that Annie ought to pair off with
Tom the dull vet but for this weekend it is Norman, husband of Annie’s sister Ruth, with
whom she planned to go. They were to meet secretly but Norman turns up early and
when Annie calls the whole thing off Norman decides to stay on at the house and gets
roaring drunk. That’s when the fun begins. Call 0151 348 1084.l The Woolies” produce many successful plays, and have regular events
