Jennings

Cathy is a member of the well-known Bennett family that made Portsmouth and Wheelersburg a place where base-ball, scholarships, helping the needy and discovering talented youth is a way of life. Cathy worked behind the scenes with her father Gene, but now steps up to the plate as she continues the legacy of the baseball Hall of Famer Gene Bennett and his wife Loretta . She fills the bases with love for those not as blessed and brightens kids’ days without many know-ing who is playing Santa Claus.

Cathy quietly lives everyday with a

cause. From getting school supplies for kids that are without

to supporting families when tragedy strikes, she helps her friends and neigh-bors as well as those in need throughout the community, Cathy works to make the area greater each day. She was instru-mental in the return of the Gene Bennett Classic held this summer and spoke highly of her father at the Annual Base-ball Banquet held in the spring. Cathy is an everyday hero who goes above and beyond and is making a difference in our community.

Members of the 14th Street Community Center.

The Fourteenth Street Community Center is a non-profit organization that continues to positively impact the com-munity by developing new academic programs and offering a safe and drug-free environment for all youth in Scioto County. Their goal is to provide hope and guidance to all members of the com-munity through their free educational and recreational programs available at the Center located at 1222 14th Street as well as their annex located in the former Army Reserve building on 17th Street. Programs include: Ceramics & Pottery Classes, Violin Lessons, a Com-puter Center, Homework Assistance and Tutoring, Youth Fitness and Person-al Training. After-School Drop-In offers free after-school meals and activities.

New programs include “Creative Pro-cess” which focuses on youth ages 15 thru 17 and is offered by Nick Sherman of Nick Sherman’s Designs. Students have access to two computers with

graphics and design software for hands-on approach to jumpstart their imagi-nation. “Watch Me Grow”, a free 12 week agriculture and entrepreneurship program, provides inner-city and rural youth hands-on experience in a small business development while establish-ing a sense of self sufficiency, leadership and confidence. In addition a Chess Pro-gram started in late June.

Board members include Orville Ferguson, President; John Valentine, Vice-president; Leanne Johnson, Trea-surer; Amanda Lewis, Secretary and Board Members Helen Adams, Jesse Bertram, Andrew Carter, Evan Fisher, Tanner Hatcher, Justin Ottney and Aaron Wright. The Fourteenth Street Community Center relies on Bingo held twice weekly at the 17th Street Annex, the annual Soul Food and Music Festival and community support to maintain their commitment to local youth devel-opment.

Terry is a seasoned Ohio River Val-ley American Red Cross Volunteer who is completing his fifth year as a leader of the Disaster Action Team (DAT) for Adams and Brown Counties. As a DAT Leader, Terry ensures that those affected by disaster in these counties receive the Red Cross assistance they need to start recovering after a disaster. As a leader in his community, Terry also attends the Brown County Local Emer-gency Planning Committee meetings on behalf of the Red Cross. During the past year Terry assisted 14 families that were affected by a disaster. Because of Terry’s actions, those families had a place to stay, clothes to wear and food to eat when the situation was otherwise hope-less for them. Because of Terry’s actions, hope was reestablished in these families’ lives. He was also present during the Ohio flooding of 2018, handing out much needed cleanup supplies to those affected

by the flooding.Terry believes in giving back to his

surrounding communities. What better way to do that than to volunteer with the American Red Cross and assist those affected by disaster? Terry stands ready daily to alleviate suffering in the face of an emergency. He is the embodiment of that mission and true credit to himself, his community and the American Red Cross.

The following stats and activity has been recorded from the period of July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.

Disaster Relief and Community Disaster Education

When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross is there. So far this year, we have responded to 137 local disas-ter events, helping 161 families and providing immediate assistance to 511 individuals.

Because being prepared can make your family and community safer and sometimes minimize injury and destruction, we offered puppet shows, the Pillowcase Project and community presentations to over 1,800 students and general public.

Concerning fire safety and build-ing home preparedness kits to shelter in place so their families can be safe during a disaster, we installed 1,517 smoke detectors in 531 homes, serv-ing 1,385 clients throughout several counties. Your local Red Cross saved 3 verified lives in South Webster, OH in 2017 during a home fire due to pre-

viously installed smoke detectors by ORV.

Health and Safety ServicesFrom First Aid, CPR and AED, train-

ing to swim and lifeguarding, Ameri-can Red Cross programs helped people lead safer and healthier lives. This year 1,294 individuals learned lifesaving skills through classes offered by ORV.

Armed Forces Emergency ServicesThe American Red Cross provides

communication between those in the Armed Forces and their families. We have a worldwide network that reaches service members wherever they are to communicate a birth, death or illness. This year we provided emergency con-nections for 205 military families.

Blood ServicesEvery two seconds, someone in the

United States needs blood. Thanks to generous blood donors, the Red Cross collects and distributes nearly half the nation’s blood supply. This fiscal year, we conducted 156 blood drives, col-lecting 4,498 units of blood.

A Note About VolunteersWe depend on volunteers of all ages

and backgrounds to carry on our work. Volunteers constitute 97 percent of our total workforce, serving as mem-bers of the board, instructors teaching lifesaving skills, disaster action team members, assisting blood drives, event organizers and more.

This year, 180 volunteers made the work of the local Red Cross possible, contributing countless hours.

International ServicesThe international tracing program

helps local families find relatives with whom they have lost contact because of a natural disaster, war or internal conflict.

Wednesday May 23rd, was the first Nannie and Grammie Day for Melanie Taylor and Brenda Shipley for the summer of 2018. Brenda brought her grandson and sent him to get on his swim suit while she was helping her granddaughter get hers on. Suddenly Melanie asked “Where’s

Brodie” her 2 1/2 year old son. The ladies glanced at the pool but did not see him among the 5 other children so they headed for the open gate. At this point, the second hero of this story, seven year old Lydia Fields, who is Brenda’s Great Niece, said “Here he is!” And she lifted Brodie out of the water. Brodie was blue from head to toe, his tongue protruded and his eyes rolled back in his head. The ladies grabbed him from Lydia’s arms and placed him on a rug on the porch. Brenda instructed Melanie to call 911

as she tried to get air into Brodie’s little body. After several attempts of flipping him on his stomach and then to his back and hitting him on his back, he coughed up some water but he was still not really breathing. Brenda thought of a new born not responding so she spanked him. He started crying but not as she wanted so she spanked him again a little harder. Brodie started screaming bloody murder and went instantly from blue to pink. This was the best sound for Brenda and she handed Brodie to Melanie to cuddle until the EMS arrived about 20 to 25 minutes later. Not knowing how long Brodie was under water led to Brenda’s greatest fear as she worked on him. How would he be after such an ordeal? Would he have brain damage? Brenda is happy to say Brodie is perfect, beautiful and rotten.

Always willing to assist his staff with their professional or personal struggles, he lends a helping hand and empathetic

ear in the fashion of a true leader.Like the Red Cross, Mike helps

His staff considers him a work-place hero for going above and beyond. He is committed to our community and to decreasing the illicit use of opiods and other substances in our area. He serves as a role model for a large num-ber of his staff but like a true leader, Mike attributes the success of Ascend to them.

Richie Fraley, Eric Mucha, and J.D. Jones.

Neighbor to Neighbor HeroIt was a nice spring day and Jade

Johnson and Nathan Hadsell were still get-

ting settled in their new home on Cypress

Street. It was May 21st when a ninety foot

tree fell on the couples’ new home. The

Portsmouth Fire Department and Police

Department were called to assist, but they

did not have many of the tools required

to remove such a monstrous obstacle

from the home. Since the young couple

had just moved in, they did not have the

items needed either. Thanks to neighbors

Richie Fraley, J.D. Jones and Eric Mucha,

who rushed in to help with tools, nails

and tarps. They were all very supportive

during a very difficult time and stopped

by several times following the disaster to

ensure Jade and Nathan were doing fine or

to see if they needed anything. Luckily no

one was hurt and their new roof is com-

plete.

Although the ninety foot tree was a

disaster for Jade and Nathan, they met

their neighbors and quickly became a part

of their new neighborhood.

CPR/AED/First Aid HeroCindy is a cardiac rehab nurse at

Southern Ohio Medical Center who happened to be in the right place at the right time to help save a life. While Christmas shopping at Belk in Ashland she came upon a medical emergency. Little did Cindy know that the individual was a former rehab patient, Karen Griffith. Unaware of this at the time, Cindy jumped into action and administered CPR for about 25 minutes as well as an AED (automated external defibrillator) installed by Belk. While on their way to KDMC, one of the EMTs expressed sympathy to Karen’s daughter; however when they administered an IV, Karen’s cardiac monitor beeped and she was wide awake. She was

later transported to OSU Ross Heart Hospital where staff told her that what happened to her was quite unusual and it was even more rare for someone to survive such an incident. Karen is grateful for Cindy and thanks God for giving her the nursing skills to use in such a powerful way.
