September 2017 First Baptist Church Bozeman Despite many of us not being in school, our church primarily functions on the school calendar. Each September brings with it a sense of renewed energy and purpose. Summer is coming to a close. Vacations are over. Classes have begun. The end of summer and onset of fall brings a more normal rhythm and routine. And I love it. Because ritual and regularity is really important. While it’s fun to have a few months of change each year, settling into a rhythm is good for our soul. We need sabbatical from our daily routines from time to time, but mostly, our bodies and souls need ritual and regularity. And the beginning of a new school year – a new semester – is the perfect time to dive back into healthy, rhythmic patterns of life. So, I’m excited to have us all back from vacations and to be together in worship again. I’m excited to start another season of building community through small group ministry. I’m excited for our new children’s ministry curriculum, Godly Play, to get started this month – and for our kids to be learning how to worship. I’m excited to start meeting with our high school students for Sunday School again. I’m excited that our college and young adult ministry is back meeting more regularly. I’m excited that The Rock is open for another year. I’m excited for new opportunities to serve our community. It’s an exciting time in the life of our church. But mostly…I’m thankful. I’m thankful for this incredible church and the amazing ministry you do. I’m thankful for your willingness to learn and grow and try new things. I’m thankful for your eagerness to serve and lead in a myriad of ways. I’m thankful for your courage in moving out into the world with the good news of Jesus. And I’m thankful for the privilege of serving as your pastor. September 1 marks my two- year anniversary as senior pastor at FBC Bozeman, and these last two years have been some of the best in my life. I love my work, I love you all, and I couldn’t ask for a better job. So, here’s to a new year…of worshipping God together, of learning and growing together as disciples of Jesus, of getting to know one another as we live life together, and of serving our neighbors, community, and world together. Grace and Peace, Pastor Jason Here’s to Another Year

Despite many of us not being in school, our church primarily functions on the school calendar.

I’m excited for new

opportunities to serve our community.

So, here’s to a new year…of worshipping God together, of learning and growing together as disciples of Jesus, of getting to know one another as we live life together, and of serving our neighbors, community, and world together.

“Back to School”- Gary Cook

Proverbs Reading Challenge- Pastor Jason

On September 10, I’m starting a two-month sermon series on wisdom, working through the book of Proverbs. In conjunction, we are inviting you to read the book of Proverbs daily over the next two months. There are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs, so you’ll be able to read the whole book through twice during the course of the sermon series by reading one chapter a day.

If you want to participate, read the chapter that corresponds to that day of the month (on the first of the month you would be reading chapter 1, the second

of the month you would read chapter 2, and so on). Jump in whenever you can, but I’m going to start reading chapter 1 on September 1st…and maybe we’ll be a little bit wiser in a couple months!

A Huge Thank You- Pastor Jason

I couldn’t be more excited that our kids are about to embark on the Godly Play adventure. I’m thrilled that they will grow in their faith and learn how to worship God for the rest of their lives. But getting ready for this new program has been SO MUCH WORK and I’m very grateful for the people who have worked tirelessly to ensure our children have an amazing children’s ministry experience. This has certainly been an entire-church project, so thank you all, but I’m especially grateful for the service and sacrifice of Mandy Bowker, Bobbi Miller, Carl Fahlstrom, Grace Holiday, and Maddi Miller. You all are incredible!

Six months ago I wasn’t sure I would be able to write “Back to School” this month, but thanks to your generosity here we are, opening for our eleventh year on August 29th.

There are a number of administrative and personnel

changes being implemented by The Rock Board of Directors, but to the parents, students, and school community, The Rock should function much the same, although we will not at this time be open before school.

Tammy and I are in our usual pre-school mode: cleaning, shopping, stocking, preparing. We had some help on Thursday night, the 24th, when a bevy of volunteers descended upon The Rock to clean windows, screens, and refrigerators, to dust, wipe tables and chairs, etc. Thanks to all those hands, in particular those from our congregation: Mac Miller (who stayed to the bitter end), Pat and Paul Newby, Grace Holiday, Lynn Dooley.

Looking forward to another great year. Keep us in your prayers.

Wed. Sept 5 at 1:30 p.m. ABW will meet to wrap our heads around planning for the upcoming year.

Please bring ideas of WHAT you’d like to do. It’s fun to be open to new and different ideas, new and different ways of sharing Jesus with others, as well.

We’ll start with an all ladies luncheon this Sun, Sept 10 following our church service. I’m excited about the new and different ideas in which we can participate!

Team, talk with Pastor Jason. The teams are always open to fresh perspectives and ideas.

FBC will have a booth at Catapalooza on the MSU campus on August 24 & 25 to meet and greet incoming college students for the fall semester. We will hand out candy and soda and church information and have a drawing for Freshmen Survival Kits.

FBC will be in charge of the Templed Hills Family Camp again this year over Labor Day weekend, September 1-4. All are encouraged to attend camp, either for the entire weekend or for just a day. It is sure to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Remember to keep Pastor Jason and his family, the church, and The Rock in your prayers daily as we all work together to discern God’s will and direction for FBC and The Rock. Pray that the Lord will help to meet our needs and that we will be a faithful church in all that we do. Also pray for your Leadership Team as they seek God’s wisdom and guidance for FBC. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to speak with Pastor Jason or members of the Leadership Team. Leadership Team members are: Gary Cook, Grace Holiday, Austin Beard, Robin Moore, and Carl Fahlstrom.

The Leadership Team reviewed the First Baptist Church (FBC) financial report for July at our meeting on August 2. The Non-Designated General Fund balance was $75,732 as of 7/31/17. This balance

reflects the transfer of $19,500 from the FBC-ABF Endowment Fund Account to cover the Sr. Pastor expenses for the third quarter. The Pledge & Plate giving for July was $5,518 (does not include the fifth Sunday offering from 7/31). July expenses (General Fund + Escrow Fund contribution) were $4,360 (No Sr. Pastor). We covered these July expenses with the July Pledge & Plate giving with $1,158 remaining. July expenses including the Sr. Pastor were $12,238.

We are currently collecting money for the ABC One Great Hour of Sharing offering and have collected $45 so far. Envelopes and informational materials are available on the back table in the sanctuary.

We have raised $830 for the Godly Play curriculum materials for the new children’s program which will start on Sunday, September 10. The library room in the basement will be devoted to the Godly Play program. Take a peek to see how the classroom is progressing.

As of 7/31/17, we have collected $6,350 for The Rock Special Offering. This amount, plus the $504 donation from the FBC 2017 Budget, was transferred to The Rock in late August to be part of the $50,000 matching grant opportunity offered by the Gilhousen Family Foundation.

The Worship Ministry Team met on 8/17 to review and evaluate the current worship gatherings and to discuss upcoming fall worship plans and any new ideas for the fall. The Community Ministry Team met on 8/24 to discuss ideas for possible fall outdoor activities and for the fall small group ministry. If you would be interested in serving on either of these two teams or the Mission Ministry
