POSTCODE 5068

Busy times in 5068. Buyers came from far and wide to purchase pre-loved

treasures at the Kensington Day of Garage Sales in August Logs were

moved, weeds were pulled and foliage was pruned at the Working Bee in

Borthwick Park in early September.

On a cold August night a group of local writers and poets from the

Kensington and Norwood Writers Group, waxed lyrical in a setting of open

fires, delicious supper and attentive listeners at the Rising Sun Inn and

September saw Spring sprung at Sundays in the Park with spring lamb,

spring rolls and a spring in the steps of those who attended.

COMMUNITY CAROL SINGING

Come and sing in Christmas with a carol or two 7.00pm on Wednesday 18th

December. Meet in Regents Park (opp the Kensington Hotel) and join the

group to bring Christmas to the streets of Kensington for an hour or so.

HAVE YOU MET.. JOHN LEGG

John is a musician, writer,

researcher, web content editor and

co-ordinator of Borthwick Park’s

Biodiversity Program. He has lived

in Bridge Street for 8 years.

Kensington is……….richly diverse

and pleasantly eccentric.

I live here because….its city location

with access to community, heritage

and the hills.

My favourite place is…Borthwick

Park and the creeks and rivers of the

Kakadu escarpment.

I took on the role coordinating the

Borthwick Park Biodiversity

Program because….I was disturbed

by the park’s degraded state and

lack of understorey.

My plans for the Park are…… to see

it returned more closely to its pre-

settlement state as an example and

inspiration.

I lose sleep over…our disregard for

the planet and our kids’ increasing

disconnect from the environment.

Oh, and weeds in the park!

I’m at my most relaxed when….I’m

bird watching in the bush.

I can’t say no to….making lists.

In reality I’m now…..making another

list; planning to perform in next

year’s Fringe.

See Johnleggmusic on Facebook.

PLANNING, DEVELOPMENT AND HERITAGE

EXPERT PANEL ON PLANNING REFORM

KRA recently made a detailed submission to the Expert Panel detailing some of our experiences with the current

planning system and made some suggestions for the future. The Community Alliance (CA) also made a detailed

submission on behalf of its 30 members which includes the KRA. Copies of both submissions can be viewed on

www.kra.org.au

COALITION FOR PLANNING REFORM

The Community Alliance, recently joined forces with the Conservation Council of South Australia and the National Trust

to create the Coalition for Planning Reform (CPR). CPR represents 120 active community groups. CPR is calling for a

moratorium on all major planning decisions by the State Government with a view to creating a new, more democratic,

planning system. (Further information can be viewed www.kra.org.au).

The CPR is concerned that the Urban Renewal Amendment Bill was recently approved without public consultation.

(Further information can be viewed www.kra.org.au).

At the same time, major “rezonings” are happening under the 30 Year Plan despite inadequate community

consultation.

Members of the CPR have lost faith in the planning system, and believe it needs fundamental reform. The current

system seems geared towards fast-track ad hoc development that mostly fails to take into account climate change and

sustainability principles.

The Coalition wants a new planning system that:

• Adequately addresses long term critical issues including sustainability, climate change, transport, infrastructure,

food and water security, environmental aspects, biodiversity, social aspects, sustainable design, employment,

heritage, health and economic viability;

• Has genuine and meaningful community engagement;

• Has transparent, accountable decision-making with an independent and open review process, resulting in

outcome-based and enforceable commitments;

• Reforms environmental assessment of development that currently falls outside of the normal processes; &

• Reviews the 30 Year Plan or delivers a new planning strategy to replace it..

We suspect Kenny The Koala went on holiday or into hibernation

for the winter. He’s back now ready to munch his way through all

the new spring shoots. He was recently sighted having an early

morning drink of water from the gutter in Maesbury Street. Let

us know if see him around. [email protected]
