Min er als ob served: al bite (feld spar), almandine (gar net),autun ite, beryl, bi o tite, colum bite, kasolite, microcline (feld -spar), mus co vite, opal (var. hyalite), py rite, schorl (tour ma line),zircon.
Com ments: Ac cord ing to Perham (1987) the HeikkinenQuarry was op er ated for feld spar on sev eral oc ca sions be gin ning in the 1930’s. It is known for flu o res cent min er als (autun ite andhyalite), and pro duced a beryl crys tal 10 feet long. There has not
been much ac tiv ity here re cently, but a care ful search of thedumps might turn up some interesting minerals.
Di rec tions: Driv ing: From the jct. of Rtes. 26 and 219 in WestParis, drive west for 5.60 miles to the end of Rte. 219 in Green -wood. Turn left (south), con tinue 0.10 mile, and turn left ontoHayes Hill Road. Drive 0.95 mile to end of im proved road.Check at house for per mis sion to park. If owner is n’t home, con -tinue a few feet onto woods road and park so as not to blockschool bus turn around in yard. Park ing space is suit able for onlyone or two col lec tor ve hi cles at a time.
Walk ing: Walk south on old woods road for about 1500 paces(4500 feet) to the Heikkinen Quarry. The quarry pit is a long nar -row cut into the hill side on the left side of road. Dumps aremainly on the right side of the road.
