Salzland Druck completes its value chain with the Easymatrix 106 C die cutter Managing Director Christian Heinrich, his Postpress Business Unit Manager Sebastian Minge and Norbert Schäfer from Heidelberg (from right to left) are pleased about the enhanced customer provision.

Salzland Druck has been offering its customers special printed products for more than 100 years. With the Easymatrix 106 C, the company aims to take on new projects.

The Salzland Druck product portfolio is very diverse.

Salzland Druck completes its value chain with the Easymatrix 106 C die cutter• The service provider for special printed products can now

perform postpress steps for high-quality products itself• Acquisition of new markets and customers• Die cutter boasts a good price-performance ratio, a high

degree of flexibility, a wide range of materials and short makeready times

“Success by creating something special” – Salzland Druck GmbH & Co. KG in Staßfurt has lived by this motto since its foundation over one hundred years ago. The owner-operated family company, with its more than 70 employees, is one of Germany’s leading special print service providers. The full-service print shop focuses on UV technology and concentrates on its industry customers, agencies, specialist publishing companies and public sector clients. For this demanding clientele, who are some of the market leaders in their particular sectors, the portfolio of products is extremely diverse. It ranges from folder systems, through training and presentation offerings, displays, stickers, labels and foil and cardboard packaging, to magazines, loose leaf publications and books.

“Postpress is precisely the area where the final touches are given to the products and they can be individually finished to create something special,” confirms Christian Heinrich, Managing Partner at Salzland Druck. “This is why we decided on systematic development in this area and we have been producing with our Easymatrix 106 C die cutter since the beginning of this year.” Christian Heinrich was impressed by the specialist consultancy services provided by the Heidelberger Druckmaschinen Vertrieb Deutschland GmbH experts, who gave extensive, competent support during installation and commissioning, including concerning the suitable cutting tool technology.

Customers benefit from the completed value chainWith the Easymatrix 106 C, Salzland Druck is now able to completely produce the high-quality foil, plastic and card-board products itself. Furthermore, subproducts required for the production of training and presentation offerings as well as folder systems can also be created. “In this way, we can offer our customers even more impressive products, further develop our consultancy expertise and also acquire customers for new projects,” says Christian Heinrich confidently.

This is precisely what the new die cutter has facilitated and it has even surpassed Heinrich’s expectations. “Each of our jobs is unusual, from plastic stand-up displays for the B2B sector, through kiss cut stickers, to foil folders with a material thickness of up to 800 µm and cardboard products with highly-complex cutting geometries.” The Easymatrix 106 C processes all these materials without any problems and it boasts impressive equipment, which includes quick-lock frames, test sheet removal, registers at all the stations as well as simple touchscreen operation and other features that ensure extremely short makeready times. With an average run of 10,000 cut sheets per production job, it is possible to achieve a production time including makeready of less than three hours in some cases, depending on the material used. A further advantage is the very good price-performance ratio and the high degree of flexibility of the Easymatrix 106 C.

Heidelberg introduced the Easymatrix at drupa 2016. Since

then, worldwide sales of the die cutter have been very good and it is another product stemming from the successful cooperation between Heidelberg and its partner MK Masterwork.

Service mentality requires transparency and a high level of availabilityThe Salzland Druck pressroom features a six-color Speedmaster CD 102 UV with coating unit, which creates excellent results on foil, plastic and paper with highly-pigmented and light-resistant colors. Next to this is a Speedmaster SM 102 with a perfecting device which prints the front and reverse sides in one pass. The presses are networked with the modern prepress setup via the Prinect Pressroom Manager. “The trend towards Industry 4.0 has made it essential to ensure cost and production transparency in all areas. This results in advantages such as material cost savings and lean production, as well as transparency and flexibility with respect to the customer,” confirms Christian Heinrich. The company operates in three shifts. “We use the Heidelberg remote service, and the service and maintenance agreements guarantee a high degree of machine availability, including plannable costs.” Saphira consumables, such as printing plates and inks, are also used.

To ensure punctual and reliable delivery of the high-quality end products, Salzland Druck operates its own fleet of vehicles. “At our company, everything revolves around the customers; we provide them with special products and special services – and this is even more the case now we have the complete value chain,” summarizes Christian Heinrich. www.salzland-druck.de

The August Faller Group opted for a Heidelberg Primefire 106, and will receive one of the first machines worldwide. The CEOs of the two companies – Dr. Michael Faller (fourth from left) and Dr. Daniel Keesman (second from right) from Faller and Rainer Hundsdörfer (fourth from right) from Heidelberg – and their teams are looking forward to the digital future.

Faller specializes in the production of secondary packagings for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. It also develops custom packagings like the compliance pack, which consists of a protective cardboard sleeve that provides the drugs in unit-dose blisters.

The Primefire 106 opens up new applications through variable printing and customization. The seven-color inkjet system provides a large color space for optimal spot color simulation and offers print quality identical to that of offset printing.

Digital print solution from Heidelberg – Faller reserves one of the first Primefire 106 for its digital pharmaceutical packaging production• Digitization supports the trend towards smaller runs

resulting from specialized medicinal products• Primefire guarantees the high safety standards of the

pharmaceutical and healthcare industry• Development of new service offerings• Sustainable production through environmentally friendly

materials and less paper waste

The pharmaceutical and healthcare market is increasingly moving towards specialized medicinal products. As a result, the packaging runs for these specially developed medicines are becoming ever shorter, along with the delivery times. August Faller GmbH & Co. KG based in Waldkirch near Freiburg has decided to counter this trend by placing an advance order for the Primefire 106 digital printing system from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) in order to obtain one of the first machines worldwide in 2018. “We specialize in the production of secondary packaging for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry, and see ourselves as a supply chain partner to our customers,” explains Managing Partner Dr. Michael Faller. “The diversity of the Primefire technology will create new opportunities in packaging production, which is increasingly moving towardscustomization, serialization, and digitization.”

Primefire guarantees high safety standards and sustainabilityThe products produced by the August Faller Group – folding cartons, package inserts, and adhesive labels as well as combination products and packaging services – call for high availability and flexibility as well as top quality and zero defect production. “With the Primefire, we can guarantee the very high safety standards of the pharmaceutical and health-care industry, even for short runs and variable data,” says Peter Ganter, Director of the PharmaServiceCenter Folding Cartons in Waldkirch, with confidence. “As a specialist in offset printing, high print image quality is also crucial for us. Our print tests on the Primefire showed coverage of 95% of the Pantone color space. Furthermore the result achieved with the substrates we used was identical to that of offset printing. End customers will not be able to notice any difference com-pared with conventional offset printing results at first glance.” The technology of the Primefire has further important benefits for Faller as a sustainable company: the water-based inkjet ink is recyclable, making the cardboard folding cartons even more environmentally friendly. Material is also saved since very little paper waste is produced, which is one of the goals of sustainability when it comes to resource efficiency.

Digitization has benefits for customers“Heidelberg is the ideal partner for us because of its process knowledge along the value chain. The partnership plays an important role in us being able to offer our customers new options for producing competitive and attractive packagings,” confirms Dr. Michael Faller. “What’s more, our employees are already looking forward to tapping the attractive opportunities offered by digital printing and upgrading their skills.”

August Faller GmbH & Co. KG has enjoyed a decades-long partnership with Heidelberg, further strengthened by numerous joint field tests and product developments. It currently uses ten Heidelberg sheetfed presses in 50 x 70 cm format at its sites in Waldkirch and Lodz in Poland, all delivering high productivity through digital processes. It also has two die-cutting machines and nine folder gluers from Heidelberg for its postpress needs.

The August Faller Group is constantly working on its digiti-zation strategy. “Digital printing is an important link in the digitization of our administrative and productive processes. By networking digital printing with our preprint processes and the digital ordering and job system, we will increase the profitability and flexibility of our processes in the long term and, by doing so, also generate benefits for customers,” explains Jörg Frischkorn, Head of European Operations for Faller.

The Primefire 106 was presented at drupa 2016 and is the first industrial digital printing system in B1 format. The first field test was recently started, and a further one is due to start at the end of the year. Heidelberg is on schedule with the market launch, with demand from customers already outstripping production capacity. www.august-faller.com

The centerpiece of the press is the new Prinect Press Center XL 2 with Wallscreen XL. It is the interface that enables highly productive cooperation between man and machine and turns operators into pro-cess managers for navigated and autonomous printing.

The InterTech Technology Award program spotlights innovations that are driving the industry forward.

The Gallus Labelfire 340 digital production system combines unrivalled UV inkjet printing quality and maximum-efficiency digital printing with the inline productivity and speed of flexographic printing.

Heidelberg’s digitization strategy rewarded – Two InterTech Technology Awards 2017 confirm undisputed industry leadership

• Prinect Press Center XL 2 with Wallscreen XL and Intellistart 2 marks breakthough introducing autonomous print production

• Gallus Labelfire 340 leading the digital future of label printing

Printing Industries of America (PIA), the world’s largest graphic arts trade association, awarded the Prinect Press Center XL 2 with Wallscreen XL and Intellistart 2 and the Gallus Labelfire 340 with the renowned InterTech Technology Award for 2017. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is now honored with their 37th and 38th star for outstanding and innovative products – making them the most decorated manufacturer in the industry.

“The InterTech Awards are an important acknowledgment underlining Heidelberg’s leading position in both digital printing technology as well as the digitization of the entire print shop operation,” says Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Member of the Management Board responsible for Digital Business and Services.

Both products were presented for the first time at last year’s drupa – demonstrating innovations in productivity for offset printing and new applications in label production. The InterTech jury agreed that the Prinect Press Center XL 2 with Wallscreen XL and Intellistart 2 software represents a breakthrough in terms of the digitization of offset print production. The Gallus Labelfire realized an outstanding engineering achievement by introducing industrialized digital print production into the label market, one of the industry’s biggest growth segments.

Paradigm shift in print production set to double productivityFor the first time in the history of offset printing, the Prinect Press Center XL 2 with Wallscreen XL and Intellistart 2 enables the press to execute consecutive job changes fully autono-mously without any operator intervention. This provides game changing productivity boosts for commercial and web-to-print customers. Heidelberg’s patented Intellistart 2 is the key enabling component, combining data analytics, mechanical design and intelligent software, including color measure-ment systems that define and execute the fastest changeover sequence possible. The automatic processes are parallelized, optimized and autonomously completed in the ideal sequence.

“The judges were unanimous in their conviction that this level of autonomous operation signals a brave new future in print manufacturing,” said Jim Workman, vice president of Printing Industries of America’s Center for Research and Technology.

Gallus Labelfire enables industrial digital convertingThe Gallus Labelfire addresses the growing demand for cost-effective production of short, medium, versioned and variable data label runs. The system combines state-of-the-art inkjet printing heads with the benefits of conventional printing and various inline processing possibilities. It enables label printers to varnish, embellish and further process labels inline – from the roll to the finished die-cut label in a single production operation. By launching this new technology, Heidelberg and Gallus are actively shaping business models in the label segment, offering users a versatile, innovative and cost-effective solution.

“The press innovatively combines inkjet printing, flexo printing, embellishing, and converting; the judges could see the impact of a press that can do it all in a single pass,” said Workman.

InterTech Technology Award – renowned awards for outstand-ing innovations in the print media industryPrinting Industries of America first presented the InterTech Technology Award in 1978. Each year, the association recognizes print media innovations in a variety of categories. Heidelberg has received over 35 of all the awards presented over the years for various prepress, press, and postpress technologies. That puts it well ahead of its market competitors and underlines its long-standing innovationleadership in printing along the entire value-added chain.
