Ecodan heat pumps harvest, upgrade and move heat from one location to another.
To achieve this the vapour compression cycle is used, which has the ability to take low temperature renewable heat from the environment and raise it to usable temperaturescapable of handling the space and water heating loads required in buildings.
How Ecodan air source heat pumps work
At the beginning of the first phase the refrigerant is a cold low pressure liquid
1. The refrigerant passes into the evaporator and heat energy from the outside air passes over the evaporator causing the refrigerant to increase in pressure and change to a warm vapour
2. This warm vapour then enters the compressor where its temperature increases as a result of the compression process and turns into a hot gas
3. The hot refrigerant gas is then condensed as it passes across one side of a plate heat exchanger. The heat is transferred to thecooler side (water side) of the heat exchanger, and this is transferredvia the primary water circuit to heat up the water cylinder insidethe property. As the temperature of the refrigerant decreases the state changes from a gas back to a cool vapour
4. Despite dropping in temperature, the cool vapour still has a high pressure and to reduce this pressure the vapour passes throughan expansion valve. This causes the pressure to drop and thetemperature lowers, returning the refrigerant to its initial stateof cool low pressure liquid.
This process is repeated
It is only the refrigerant that passes through this cycle; the water is heated as it travels through the plate heat exchanger.The heat energy from the refrigerant passes through the plate heat exchanger to the cooler water which increases in temperature. This heated water enters the building heating circuit and can also be used to provide sanitary hot water via a hot water cylinder.

The complete range of Ecodan heating products has received full accreditation for the Government’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).
In addition to certifying heating products the MCS process also looks at the companies installing this type ofequipment so that customers can take real confidence that they will get the performance and service expected. MCS is designed to evaluate products and installers against criteria for microgeneration technologies, thereby providing greater consumer protection. An MCS approved product, such as Ecodan, installed by an MCS approved installer is a requirement to apply for the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
Microgeneration Certification Scheme
The PCDB, formerly known as SAP Appendix Q, allows you to enter performance data specific to Ecodan rather than using the defaultair source heat pump data in SAP. This enables a higher efficiency to be shown within the SAP calculations for the property.

Ecodan provides a proven, efficient way of heating buildings. The Government will now pay for the generation of renewable heat through theRenewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This has been designed to level the playing field between the cost of renewable and traditional fossil fuel systems.Switching to heating systems that use eligible energy services can help the UK reduce its carbon emissions and meet its renewable energy targets.

The FTC2B has been developed to allow the Ecodan PUHZ range to interface with third party or BEMS(Building Energy Management System) controls. A combination of volt free and voltage inputs allow the EcodanPUHZ monobloc range to be used in applications where only simple on/off and temperature control is required.

All Ecodan Flow Temperature Control 5 (FTC5) systems come with free energy monitoring as standard.System users are able to measure both consumed electrical energy and produced heat energy to the nearest kWh. Further energy monitoring packs are also available, ranging from electric meter packs, through to a Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) compliant Metering and Monitoring Service Pack (MMSP) which allows additional RHI payments to be claimed.
In addition to the basic system functionality features, i.e. hot water and heating status, with FTC5 the systems energy performance can alsonow be viewed. Historic energy consumption, heat production and run cost reports are available via the main controller, SD card or MELCloud.

Specifically designed for large applications, the Ecodan CAHV air source heat pump monobloc system canoperate singularly, or form part of a multiple unit system. The CAHV also comes equipped with a wide rangeof controller features as standard.
A multiple unit system has the ability to cascade available units on and off to meet the load from a building. As an example of this modulation,a 16 unit system allows 0.5kW increments of capacity, from 18kW all the way up to 688kW. This level of modulation is unprecedentedwithin the heating industry and with cascade and rotation built in as standard, the Ecodan CAHV system is perfectly suited to a widerange of commercial applications.
