One sign that summer is over is that Beach United’s Council is back in gear. Council met on September 22 with a full agenda and lots of energy. Here are some highlights. If you have questions, suggestions or

concerns, please let us know. The list of council volunteers is below.

Staffing: Over the summer our music staffing has been striking some new notes! We have had a wonderful variety of leaders and music styles, as we discern how our music can support our mission and goals going forward. More to come throughout the fall; please let us know what you think!

Ministry Articulation Process: Beach United has embarked on a “mission articulation process” with Toronto Southeast Presbytery. This is the new version of the Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC) process by which local congregations determined their need for Ministry staff. The process will prioritize two to three specific, mission-related goals for the next 12-24 months, along with tangible, measurable actions to achieve those goals. These goals will inform our long-term staffing requirements. We expect to receive the recommended mission plan in late November 2015. Many thanks to the congregation members who have volunteered to be part of the Mission Articulation Process: Elaine Graham, Marian Hilton, Patricia Sullivan-Taylor, Karen Watson and Jim Winn. Sheila Richards and Karen Dale are also part of the group, along with Toronto Southeast Presbytery staff member Janet Marshall, and Presbytery volunteer Lee Ann Ahlstrom.

Financial Stability: A Finance Committee is developing strategies to achieve long- and short-term financial stability for Beach United. Great thanks to committee members Chris Bell, David Kiel, Martin McFarland and Barry Watson who have taken on this task.

The South Lot: Last spring, Beach United Church's Council reported that a recommendation for the South Lot of Beach United's property would be presented to the congregation in September 2015. That was an ambitious timeline. Volunteers from the congregation worked hard this summer to gather information about the two options under consideration for the South Lot: developing the land as a parking lot or as a Habitat for Humanity build. However, on September 22, the members of Council agreed that postponing the recommendation until we could have a fuller discussion at our October meeting would be necessary. We anticipate making a South Lot recommendation to the congregation in November 2015.

Council membership for 2015/2016: Council members are volunteers from the congregation. Their role on Council needs to be officially approved at a Congregation Meeting - stay tuned for the date. Here are the volunteers who have stepped forward to serve on Council this year:

Leigh Bowser, Chair ([email protected] / 647-449-8332), Paul Dowling, Vice Chair [email protected], Wendy Johnston, Past Chair [email protected], Communications: Brian Gauthier, Congregational Development: Mary Anne Lemm, Ministry & Personnel (M&P): Barry Truscott, Chair of M&P , Pastoral Care: Marian Hilton, Service: Jim McKibbin, Treasurer: Chris Bell, Trustees: Barry Watson, Chair of Trustees, Worship & Music: Marney Winn, Youth: Hastings Withers

There is always room for more voices at the Council table. In particular, we are looking for volunteers to lead Council’s Learning & Growth, Environment and Property portfolios. If you would like to get involved, or simply learn more about Council’s work, let us know!

This coming October 4, congregations around the globe will celebrate World Communion Sunday. Many of us have heard about World Communion Sunday but may not know much about where the celebration originated. The tradition began in the Shadyside Presbyterian Church in 1933 and was adopted throughout the US Presbyterian Church in 1936. The next step happened in 1940 when the Federal Council of Churches promoted the idea. Since then, the celebration has grown into an international ecumenical celebration of Christian unity. And the Table Will Be Wide – Jan Richardson A Blessing for World Communion Sunday And the table will be wide. And the welcome will be wide. And the arms will open wide to gather us in. And our hearts will open wide to receive. And we will become bread for a hungering world. And we will become drink for those who thirst. And the blessed will become the blessing. And everywhere will be the feast.

May it be so! Blessings, Karen
