Did you know high school students are a very important part of Bonfils’ volunteer donor base? This year, students from 190 Colorado schools participated in the Student Body High School Challenge, which collected 7,330 units of donated blood to help save the lives of patients in need.

Awards are given to recognize outstanding school achievement. This year’s winners are:• LargeSchoolOverall(populationofjuniorandsenior

Every student at participating high schools has the opportunity to enter a drawing to win great prizes. Lookforthisyear’swinneronourWebsiteundertheHigh School Challenge.

Additionally, Bonfils conducted two high school student focus groups recently to determine what motivates students to give blood and how we can enhance Bonfils’ high school blood drive programs.

Approximately 10 percent of the nation’s blood supply isdonatedbyhighschool-ageddonors.EarlierthisyearColorado became the 29th state that passed legislation allowing 16-year-olds to donate blood with parentalconsent. Beginning this month, Bonfils estimates that 16-year-olds will contribute as many as 2,600 blooddonations to the state’s blood supply annually.

Dear members of our community:

Thank you for your support to help patients who depend upon Bonfils Blood Center's life-saving work. Each day, your community blood center collects more than 600 donations to support patients who rely on blood products. One of the products Bonfils collects is platelets — critical in blood clotting and needed to support patients requiring cancer therapy, open-heart surgery, organ transplants and other medical treatments.

While most blood transfusions involve simply matching the patient’s blood type (ABO and Rh factor) with the donor's blood type, chronically transfused patients, like cancer patients, have more complex transfusion needs and require a more personalized blood product and Bonfils’ transfusion expertise.

Through its state-of-the-art laboratory, Bonfils conducts specialized blood testing called Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typing, which can play an important role in the patient’s immune system accepting the transfused platelets. In order to provide matched platelets when critically ill patients need them, Bonfils must increase the number of platelet units typed for HLA so we can respond quickly to physician requests for these special products. Without HLA typing and a substantial donor pool from which to provide these special platelet units, treatment is delayed and the patient’s health compromised.

You can make the difference. Proactive HLA typing is an expensive process. Each work-up costs the blood center $53, but this expense is generally not reimbursed by hospitals. In these challenging economic times, we ask your help to proactively type for HLA and to ensure that units are available without delay for chronically transfused patients. Your charitable gift of $53 will allow Bonfils to perform HLA typing of one unit and increases our pool of HLA-typed platelets and our ability to provide specially-matched units for patients in need – without delay.

Statistics indicate that each of us has a 90 percent chance of needing a blood product in our lifetime. The gift you give today can have a profound effect on a patient who needs a life-saving platelet transfusion tomorrow and may even benefit someone you know. We have included a self-addressed, prepaid envelope for your convenience. If you would like to talk to a foundation representative, please call 303.361.2820 or email us at [email protected].

It takes more than blood to save a life and together we can fulfill Bonfils’ vision to advance healthcare and save lives.

With our personal thanks and warm regards,

Have you thought of leaving Bonfils in your will or estate plans?
