Up until the 1950’s, the state had more cows than people. And during that era, it was illegal to sell margarine in the state of Wisconsin so that people would make “oleo runs” to Illinois. When I related this to a former co-worker, he laughed and asked if the state police would wait at the border - telling people that they stopped to exit the car slooowly and put the margarine on the hood! Just as people don’t want to go to the next state for margarine, we don’t want to have to travel to the Lehigh Valley for health care. I think that we work so hard as an auxiliary because we realize the value of having good health care at our doorstep and not 45 minutes away. THE STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE STAND AT THEPALMERTON COMMUNITY FESTIVAL

Hello Everyone;

May this beautiful fall season brighten your hearts and homes. It'sthat time of the year when the air just smells so crisp and I don'tknow about you but I keep baking apple pies. That's not a goodthing. Although it is a nice change from the hot summer we hadwhen I did not use my oven much at all.

Many of you helped or were going to help in the Strawberry Shortcake Stand this year and I want to saya BIG thank you. I cannot run the stand without my helpers so KUDOS to all of you!!

I would also like to send out a special thank you to my husband Chic for the many many hours he putsin, and also my daughter Laura. Another SHOUT OUT to Honey Cyr and Priscilla Offen for all they doto keep things rolling so smoothly, thank you Gals.

We had an awful storm come through Saturday that closed us down early but we were still able to sell allour Shortcake on Sunday. WOO HOO!! Another wonderful year with a "SWEET" profit.

Again thank you to everyone and please get outside and enjoy this fall weather.

Lovey

Ah fall! One thinks of cool nights and warm days,the leaves turning pretty colors, geese flyingoverhead, and of course of our strawberryshortcake stand at the Palmerton Fall Festival.Lovey Irvin and her husband Chic work all yearorganizing this event for us. We always needplenty of volunteers to staff the stand and ourscheduler, Honey Cyr, spends much of Augustmaking phone calls to fill the ten shifts, each ofwhich requires five volunteers. It is a busy time,but the shortcake is delicious and generous, andour customers love it! Lovey’s sister has madestrawberry aprons which we wear, and theycomplement our bright red booth with white letters.We are busy but we have fun!

Thunder and lightning caused the festival to closeearly on Saturday, but the heavy crowds on Fridaynight and on Sunday allowed us to sell out of our1200 servings by Sunday evening. Our freezerholding the vanilla ice cream had an electricalmalfunction on Saturday night, but happily thefreezer was quickly emptied, and the festivalelectrician fixed it before the noon start time onSunday. We are most grateful to the Festival’ssecurity for alerting us to the problem.

This year, we were helped in the booth by theeighth grade Junior Honor Society members, twoto a shift. These young people worked hard anddiligently and made the time quite fun.

Many, many thanks are due to Captains JudyWalck, Becky Steigerwalt, Anne Behler, LauraIrvin, Joann Kercsmar, Nan Campton, LeanneSamok, Renata Allen, Kathy Ahner and PriscillaOffen and to workers Donna Mackes, AnnetteMelanson, Nancy Mendsen, Bernice Kleintop,Shirley Blynn, Carol Heffelfinger, Barbara Moyer,Jenny Serfass, Betty Thomas, Liz Skrapits, TaraCrowe, Becky Miller, Joanne King, Kit Hall, CarolZiegenfuss, Honey Fabian, Joan Steinmetz, CarolPapay, Barbara Hafer, Dorothy George, ElaineWaitkus, Carol Costenbader, Marj Federanich,Mary Levendusky, Honey Cyr, Violet Strickland,Evie Plechavy, Lucy Melo, Joan Turko, JaneFarkas and Eileen Dailey.

And we can never say enough about all of the workdone by Lovey and Chic Irvin - they essentiallylive at the stand during the weekend, and they dosuch a tremendous job for our auxiliary.

THE NEARLY NEW SHOP

A Special Lady - Elizabeth Hook

One of our beloved volunteers has left us for a newadventure in California.Her passion for volunteer work began after thedeath of her husband. Betty, as we fondly refer toher, had spent most of her adult life as ahairdresser and continued to give of herself as acommitted volunteer of the hospital auxiliary. Foryears she assisted the staff of the adult center withmany tasks that contribute to the success of theadult day program.She also worked atthe hospital giftshop. Shecontinued hervolunteering at theNearly New Shop.Every Monday ateight o'clock sharpshe workedalongside themorning crewsorting, hanging,and offeringfashionista advice.Betty accumulatedapproximately8000 hours ofservice.

A lifelong resident of Palmerton, last living in thePalmerton High-rise, Betty was very active in thecommunity. For many years she was a weeklybowler with the Senior League and she visited thegym weekly.Betty loved to travel. She journeyed to Californiatwice a year to visit her family. She is the motherof two daughters, five grandchildren, and sevengreat grandchildren.As a senior citizen, she inspired others around her.She is an avid walker often taking three mileexcursions in the wee hours of the morning pasther 90th Birthday.She enjoys dining out with friends and loves toexperience new restaurants. Many times she said

" let's go to lunch" after the Monday morning shift.Coffee with lunch was always a must for Betty.On Monday, April 13th, Betty said goodbye to theMonday morning crew. This was two days beforeher 95th Birthday. We all sang Happy Birthday toher and wished her good luck on her newadventure as she moves to Upland California tolive with her daughter.Betty, you are a true loss to our auxiliary and youwill be missed.

Good Luck in all you do in California.!!
