Hôtel-Dieu de FranceThe privilegeFor Heartbeat, working at the Hôtel-Dieu de France is a privilege of the highest consideration. This temple of medicine, part of the Université Saint Joseph, is one of the largest hospitals in Lebanon. It was built in 1922 by the Jesuit Order on behalf of the French Republic, to assume both a humanitarian and academic mission. Medical practice is organized by specialized teams, covering all areas of medicine. Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery enjoy exceptional privileges, both in technical and human terms. A complete medical and surgical team comprising competent and profoundly dedicated nurses, together with highly advanced equipment and premises, contributes to enriching this field. The Al Waleed Bin Talal Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, rebuilt and equipped under the personal supervision of H.E. Mrs. Leila El-Solh Hamade, is the most remarkable testimony to that dedication.

Opéra de Paris Star Dancer Visits to Heartbeat and Hôtel-Dieu de FranceLa Chaîne de L’Espoir – France demonstrated its continuous commitment to Heartbeat when its Ambassador, Ms. Marie-Agnes Gillot, the famous ballet performer and star dancer of the Opéra de Paris, and its President, Professor Alain Deloche, visited Lebanon in May 2012.During their stay, they met a number of children operated for heart conditions at the Hôtel-Dieu de France, then attended Heartbeat’s annual gala dinner at the Casino du Liban. In a touching speech, Ms. Gillot shared with the public the emotions she felt when holding the hand of a 2-day-old baby recovering from cardiac surgery thanks to Heartbeat.

The Iraq ProgramOperations for Iraqi children and training of Iraqi staff at Hôtel-Dieu de FranceDue to inter-family marriages, war and malnutrition, an estimated 6,000 Iraqi children are in need of heart surgery. Heartbeat and La Chaîne de l’Espoir International (based in Paris) signed an agreement with Baghdad to offer surgery to a number of these children and to provide training for local medical staff. The cost of this project is completely covered by La Chaîne de l’Espoir - France. Thanks to this program, 36 Iraqi children were transferred to Lebanon with their parents during 2012. They were diagnosed by the pediatric cardiologists of Heartbeat, and were operated at Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital. The postoperative results were excellent and all 36 children returned to Baghdad with a normal heart.Accompanying the sick children, 48 members of the paramedical staff of the Ibn-Al-Bitar Cardiac Center in Baghdad arrived in Beirut in groups of 6, for training at the Cardiovascular & Thoracic Department of the Hôtel-Dieu de France. They all spent 4 weeks in the hospital and received a certificate at the end of their training. The Iraq Program provides a unique opportunity at a better life for Iraqi children and offers invaluable training for Iraqi medical staff. The program is expected to extend into 2013 to treat more children and train a greater number of personnel.

HUMANITARIAN CONTRIBUTION

Since June 2006, the Al Waleed Bin Talal Humanitarian Foundation has been offering a regular and substantial contribution to Heartbeat. The foundation’s collaboration specifically concerned the treatment of complex congenital heart diseases. Through the Hôtel-Dieu de France, the foundation has always looked for innovation in surgical therapy, and helped in the acquisition of the most advanced surgical techniques.Such an amazing task was achieved thanks to the personal care and touch of Mrs. Leila El-Solh Hamade, vice-president of the Foundation. This three-party collaboration illustrates the art of effective teamwork and serves as a model of partnership for humanitarian organizations.Support for Heartbeat is a typical sample of the vast humanitarian and social movements across the entire Lebanese territory, made possible thanks to the dynamism and generosity of an exceptional institution, the Al Waleed Bin Talal Humanitarian Foundation.

Many Heartbeat stars have made their way into successful professional singing in TV shows and international concerts. Aline Lahoud and Mirna Chaker (“Bruna”) are only two examples of success stories from earlier years. But the year 2012 was the most marked by our stars rocking the TV singing contests:

• In Lebanon and the Arab world, we all followed the exploits of Manel El Mallat in “Arabs Got Talent”, and Christian Abouanni in “The Voice”.

• Another Heartbeat star, Anthony Touma is making his way in “The Voice” of France, and

can be followed starting February on the French TV station TF1. We wish him the best of luck!

Celebrity performer Carine Rizkallah competes for HeartbeatThe renowned performer Carine Rizkallah generously donated to Heartbeat her winnings in the popular LBCI TV show “Celebrity Duets”. For 12 weeks, she competed with great talent and style, and won the sum of $14,000. Carine visited the children with congenital heart disease at the Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital, where she received a very warm welcome from the staff and Heartbeat members and fans.

Booz & Co. had generously offered to help Heartbeat with its long-term strategy, as part of its corporate social responsibility program. For a full year, a multi-disciplinary team of dedicated individuals met with Heartbeat’s members and partners. This allowed them to assess the current position of the association and evaluate future potential for development. The final document delivered updated vision, mission, and goal statements, as well as a proposed organization and governance structure with a thorough implementation plan. A big thank you goes out to Jad, Emile, Abir, Hoda, Makram, Maya, Michael, Micheline and the extended Booz family for their amazing work and commitment!

In an attempt to reach a new dimension in the management of children with congenital heart defect (CHD), Heartbeat established an exclusive program in partnership with BLC bank. The purpose of this joint venture is to develop awareness-raising educational programs to help children lead a normal life and get better integrated in society after heart surgery. The project's idea emerged after several observations of cured infants still being considered sick by their families and being restrained from getting the opportunity to become potential productive members of their community. The goal of the project is to find comprehensive solutions for this problem, built around three main interventions:1. A survey of past beneficiaries to better assess their post-op life and refine the project’s approach accordingly2. A follow-up program for current and future patients through orientation sessions to families, follow-up phone interviews and on-site visits to beneficiaries3. A bilingual awareness kit on CHD distributed all over the country, defining some medical aspects, early diagnosis methods and available solutions to treat affected childrenWith the kind and valuable assistance of BLC bank, Heartbeat is expanding its scope of work to include raising awareness among families and communities to give children the tools they need to live and lead a normal life after heart surgery.
