What was once a goal looming on the horizon is now a reality.

Heartbeat has treated hundreds of children with congenital heart disease. It is the result of an ingenious mix of medical instruments with musical ones, combining a medical corps, a musical band, and a group of volunteers from all walks of life. It is also the result of a large number of donors that includes foundations, companies, and affluent people, as well as ordinary individuals with big hearts who part with some of their hard- earned savings for a good cause. We continue our journey with bigger ambitions and we are getting closer to the goal of leaving no child behind, deprived of cardiac treatment, because of financial constraints. HUMANITARIAN CONTRIBUTION

Since June 2006, the Al Waleed Bin Talal Humanitarian Foundation has been offering a regular and substantial contribution to Heartbeat, assuming the responsibility for 30 open heart operations each year. It is the beginning of a long-term collaboration at the service of the sick children, under the direct and personal care of H.E. Mrs. Layla Solh Hamade, vice-president of the Foundation. At the initiative of Mrs. Hamade, the Foundation has equipped the Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital with a new pediatric critical care unit as well as with miscellaneous medical equipment, enabling Heartbeat to achieve another major goal, which is providing the highest medical technology available for the treatment of children with heart disease

ALAIN DELOCHEChairman of La Chaîne de l’Espoir International, in Lebanon

In October 2010, the Chairman of La Chaîne de l’Espoir International, Professor Alain Deloche, visited Beirut. During his short stay, Professor Deloche praised the achievements of Heartbeat, La Chaîne de l’Espoir in Lebanon, both in terms of its humanitarian achievements as well as its excellent medical results. “Heartbeat has become a regional reference for the treatment of congenital heart disease,” Professor Deloche said, “and it will be contributing to raising the level of medical education in this field in the entire Middle East.”

Everybody knew him as one of the most successful businessmen in our country. Many knew that he was a major supporter of numerous humane causes. But only a few were aware of the magnitude of his contributions.A role model for modesty, discretion, and generosity, he was the father of so many little hearts waiting to be cured.

A Honda automobile, offered by Unicart Henri Tewtel & Co., was the main prize of the drawing that took place at the Heartbeat Gala Dinner at the Casino du Liban on April 10.

This magical and unforgettable evening, hosted by the renowned Lebanese explorer Maxime Chaya, was organized in collaboration with Aïshti, which offered a large collection of valuable gifts.

The 460 Multimedia Store also offered gifts with the latest in high technology.

Mr. Tony Nasrallah, after winning the Honda main prize, offered it back to Heartbeat, and the car was bought at an auction by … Mr. Nasrallah himself!

PRINGLES & HEARTBEAT JOIN FORCES

Pringles joined forces with Heartbeat during Ramadan for one cause: To help children born with a malformation of the heart. Supermarkets offered a 15 percent discount with every two cans purchased and consumers had the chance to help Heartbeat with an indirect contribution of five percent. Pringles also organized a fund-raising afternoon event at

'Les Merveilles de la Mer', in Jdeideh in September, where more than 400 children of all ages enjoyed a full day of games and fun activities while helping a child of their age receive better medical treatment.

DESSERT AT ROADSTERRoadster Diner merely wanted to spread some happiness and joy in the festive Christmas season to needy children with heart diseases. During the month of December anyone who ordered a dessert or breakfast, at any Roadster branch or by delivery, contributed by donating L.L. 1,000 to Heartbeat. Roadster strongly believes that together we can make a difference.

HAPPENINGS

A Wedding to be Remembered

For their wedding list, Doctor Amine Nasr and Doctor Latife Rassam had the novel idea of wedding gifts being donations to Heartbeat. Their wedding gift list was simply a bank account for donations to Heartbeat. We have had already birthday lists and school collections, but this was the first time that a wedding gift list was earmarked for Heartbeat.

CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN

Fund-raising Campaign at Beirut Baptist SchoolThe campaign took place on Valentine’s Day, the day of the HEART! ‘Have a Heart’ was the campaign slogan, printed on heart-shaped donuts and on heart-shaped rubber stress balls, which were sold to the students. The money collected was donated to HEARTBEAT. Happy

to be partners in saving the life of a child!

International College Fashion ShowIn the presence of their parents, International College students organized a large event. Their goal was to have fun of course, but also to act as one team to raise money for a good cause. They sold sweets, popcorn, Heartbeat T-shirts, and clothing items. Girls and boys modeled to the beat of music for local designers and

boutiques. A lecture by Dr. Issam El Rassi from Heartbeat explained heart disease in children. The money raised was used to operate on a child with a congenital cardiac anomaly. The proud students were thanked by the parents of the treated child and by Heartbeat.

Cake Sale in FarayaThe children of the Zammar family and the Edde family organized during the Faraya summer festival their usual cake sale. The proceeds were given to Heartbeat to treat babies and young children with heart disease.

Abdallah Darwiche Pediatric RoomsThanks to a generous contribution from Cheikh Badr Abdallah Darwiche, two new modern and equipped rooms have been added to the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital, in memory of his father, Cheikh Abdallah Darwiche. This is just the first of many other investments to come.

The King of Belgium knights Dr. Ramzi Ashoush, president of Heartbeat, with the

‘Order of the Crown’ In recognition of his many contributions to the improvement of the health condition of young hearts, Dr. Ramzi Ashoush, president of Heartbeat, has been knighted with ‘the Order of the Crown’ by His Majesty King Albert II of Belgium. The Belgian ambassador to Lebanon, H.E. Johan Verkammen, honored Dr. Ashoush at the association’s annual gala dinner held at the Casino du Liban. While decorating Dr. Ashoush on behalf of the King, the ambassador highlighted some of Dr. Ashoush’s achievements through the ‘Heartbeat - La Chaine de L’Espoir’ association. He said: "Dr. Ashoush is indeed a great man for having founded, along with personal friends and peers, this noble association as well as for having dedicated over five years of his life to saving the sick hearts of disadvantaged children.”While the noble title of ‘Knight of the Order of the Crown’ honors Dr. Ashoush, it also recognizes the efforts of all the team members of Heartbeat. They have invested boundless energy in the creation of happier living conditions for these young patients who, despite their critical illness, continue to spread joy and hope around them.

Testimonial There is something magical about music. It brings back memories, induces happiness, and inspires hopes and dreams. Music can alter our mood, make us dance, and sometimes even motivate us to fall in love. It can also add a spark to our lives, brightening our days and enlivening our evenings, while eternalizing our most cherished moments. More importantly, however, it helps make our hearts beat and create a music of their own. This is precisely why the idea behind

Heartbeat is so ingenious. Through music, Heartbeat has brought life, hope, and desire to those whose hearts need a little more rhythm. Coupled with the harmonious magic of thousands of supporters, Heartbeat’s music has encouraged the most miserable hearts to stomp with joy. Isn’t it amazing how just a few musical notes can inspire hope, change lives, and open them up to infinite possibilities?By gathering and singing, we stand united in our belief that every heart deserves the right to beat coherently and dance to the music. Indeed, we have the privilege of

providing those innocent victims of heart malfunctions with the chance to make their own kind of music and sing their own special song. What’s more, we can rest assured that our donations will be well spent and will go a long way towards helping destitute children.I wish to thank Heartbeat for its commitment, hard work, and dedication, and I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to it for allowing us to share the pleasure of instilling music and life into the hearts of those in need.
