Headmaster Of Mice and Men Congratulations to the cast and crew of this stunning production for their powerful performances and for creating such a moving piece of theatre. Congratulations also to Ms Penelope Wood, who directed the show, and to her team of designers and technicians for presenting such an imaginative version of this well- known piece. The sets and lighting and sound effects all complemented the wonderful acting beautifully. Congratulations to all involved. A Polyphony of Pianos I thoroughly enjoyed an evening celebrating the diversity of the piano with our talented piano students and staff. A Polyphony of Pianos was presented to a sell-out audience in the Middleton Theatre. There were no solo performances – only 4, 6, 8, 12 and even 16 hand performances across two concert grand pianos. During the second part of the evening, I had the pleasure of narrating Ogden Nash’s verses to accompany Saint Saens Carnival of the Animals: I hope that the boys had as much fun as I did. I would like to commend the boys on presenting a wonderful evening of music, I was very impressed by their skill and musicality. Thank you to our Head of Keyboard, Mr Greg Roberts, and our very talented and dedicated Music Staff who worked so hard to put such an entertaining concert together. Year 7 Immunisations A reminder that the second round of immunisations for Year 7 will take place on Tuesday 28 March 2017. This will include the second dose of HPV4 and Boostrix (whooping cough, tetanus, ditheria). The final HPV4 will take place in August this year. If you have any questions regarding this or any other aspect of our immunisation program, please contact the Co-ordinator of School Health Services Ms Rhonda Nicholson on 9835 1777. Lord of the Flies After an extensive audition process, 23 boys from across Victoria have been chosen to join the ensemble cast of Sir Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and Re:Bourne adaptation of Lord of the Flies. AGSV Swimming FinalsThe AGSV Swimming Finals will be held tonight at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. This is always an exciting evening, and my congratulations to the boys who have worked so hard across the season to improve their performances and times – I know they have enjoyed the opportunity to train in our own pool. I am looking forward to cheering them on tonight, and I take this opportunity to wish them all good luck in this culminating event of the competition.

Lawn BowlsAll our teams had an opportunity to play finals next week. Last week all three teams were up against Ivanhoe Grammar and the last time we played Ivanhoe in February all teams won and we kept the Challenge Cup. Last week our A and B teams were defeated (22:10, 14:13) and as a result did not make the final round. Our C team played Ivanhoe with just two Year 8 boys (Elijah Pannozzo and William Cook) but were able to win 26:7! Good luck to this team, who will be playing for the Division 3 trophy tomorrow morning at Burwood Bowls Club.

Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Middle SchoolYear 8 Parent/Teacher NightA reminder that we have the Year 8 Parent/Teacher Evening next Tuesday 28 March. Online bookings are available until Monday 27 March at 5.00pm. Your son is welcome to join you for the interviews, as it can be valuable for him to hear feedback directly from his teachers.

Easter ServiceI extend a warm welcome to parents and family members to next Thursday’s Easter Service at St Mark’s. As previously indicated, the time of the Service has changed and we will now commence at 2.00pm. If you are happy for your son to be dismissed from St Mark’s, please contact his Form Teacher to give your approval. All other boys will walk back to school and will be dismissed at 3.20pm.

End of TermIt is difficult to believe that we only have one week to go! Our term will conclude next Friday at 3.20pm following a final Middle School Assembly. I am looking forward to a great finish to the term.

Rob French, Head of Middle School

Junior School At this week’s Assembly all Year 5 boys were presented with their leadership badges, reminding them of their position as the senior Junior School class and the associated responsibilities and expectations.

During last week’s Assembly the 20 boys nominated to stand for election to the Year 5 Executive Council presented themselves and their ideas to the boys from Years 3 to 5. Their presentations were superb! The boys had clearly given a great deal of thought to the idea of leadership and how they personally could contribute to enhancing the life of the school and the experience of their school mates. I am sure the parents who were there were very proud of their sons, just as I was.The nominees were: Lucas Chin, Oliver Wu, Freddie Hughes, Ethanael Ong, Nat Navaneetharaja, Nathan Chan, Adrian Chiu, Jonathan Vais, Marcus Saw, Luka Stojnic, Justin Mellor, Charlie Williams, Matthew Tong, Samuel Chan, George Kitsoulis, Timothy Gunasegaram, Zachary Matters, James Karunaratne, Mark Sonbol and William Linehan. From the 20 boys nominated to stand for election to the Year 5 Executive Council, eight were elected. All nominated boys are congratulated for their nomination and recognition as leaders by their peers, I am pleased to announce that the 2017 Executive Council are: Adrian Chiu, Jonathan Vais, Nathan Chan, Nat Navaneetharaja, Freddie Hughes, Oliver Wu, Lucas Chin and Ethanael Ong.I will be asking our Junior School Leaders to make a difference; to provide guidance, encouragement and energy so that our school is a better place because of their leadership and example. I wish them every success and I look forward to working closely with them in the months ahead.

Lost PropertyAs Term 1 draws to a close it is timely to remind parents to check the Lost Property drawers. Lost property is located past Reception on the way through to the Art Studio. We currently have a number of uniform items, lunch boxes, drink bottles, swimming goggles etc. Some items have the name of the previous owner and we are unable to pass these back to boys, most items are not named. Please take the time to check the Lost Property table which will be on display outside Reception next week.

Mother’s Day EventWe are looking forward to seeing our Junior School mums and their sons enjoying an early morning cuppa and breakfast next term on Friday 12 May. The Junior School Green will be set up with tables and chairs, and there will be a coffee van. Coffee will be served from 7.00am so that those who have to dine and dash can

Music AMEB Conferring of DiplomasOn Tuesday evening, the AMEB held the annual Conferring of Diplomas Ceremony at Wilson Hall, Melbourne University. Candidates from across Victoria were presented with their Associate in Music Australia (A.Mus), or Licentiate in Music Australia (L.Mus), along with special prizes for excellence in practical examinations. It was a joy and an honour to witness no less than six CGS musicians receive their certificates, a huge number for any music institution, but even more so for a non-selective independent school such as ours. Of special note was also Darby Lee (Year 7), who was awarded the Henri Touzeau Cello Award, along with his A.Mus in Piano. A.Mus and L.Mus Certificates are widely recognised by many as the entry point into professional musicianship, and are a significant achievement for any musician. Our warmest and greatest congratulations to these boys for their perseverance, effort and achievement:Associate in Music Australia (A.Mus)Darby Lee, Year 7 – Piano (with distinction)Nelson Zhao, Year 12 – Piano (with distinction), Cello (with distinction)Emre Cakmakcioglu, Year 11 – ViolaDean Roff, Year 10 – OboeNicholas Wong (2016) – SaxophoneLicentiate in Music Australia (L.Mus)Brandon Chu, Year 11 – Piano (with distinction)Ben Bishop, Director of Music

“Fabulous” Falls Creek Snowsports Family Week Monday 10 July to Friday 14 July (or Sunday 16 July, details below)

Children’s Lift and Lesson Packages (unfortunately not Adult’s) can be organised for both skiing and snowboarding at significantly reduced prices. This popular skiing and snowboarding week is once again being organised for the second week of the July school holidays at Falls Creek, the most reliable Victorian snow resort. It is open to children of all CGS families and their friends. Your actual involvement in programs, lessons and activities can be as little or as much as your family desires, but regardless of your involvement significant savings can be had. The week’s tuition is conducted by the Falls Creek Snowsports School. Some enjoyable social activities will also be happening for those who wish to attend. Siblings and children’s friends are most welcome to participate. NB. Statistically, over the last 20 years, the second week of the July School Holidays has been one of the best weeks of snow for the season.

Lift and Lesson Packages The lift and lesson package option usually follows the following format:

Monday to Friday: A 1.5 hour lesson per day and a five-day lift ticket. The cost of a five-day lift and lesson package, for all students both primary and secondary, will be $387 per student. The normal cost to the public for a similar child (6 to 17 years old) lift and lesson package is approximately $610. Therefore, this package being offered constitutes a significant saving on the usual cost for lift and lesson packages that can be bought “over the counter” at Falls Creek.

Accommodation/Supervision

Please note that students need to be accommodated with and be under the supervision of at least one parent, friend or guardian during the week. Accommodation needs to be individually organised by families attending and it is very much advisable to do this soon. Booking options are provided below. Please note that the cost varies widely depending on whether you want budget lodge style, through self-catered apartments to premium accommodation. The options are an accommodation service called:

Mountain Multiservice: [email protected] (03) 5758 3499 or 0418 715 905

Other alternatives are: Falls Creek website- http://www.fallscreek.com.au

Falls Creek Central Reservations 1800 033 079 [email protected]

Falls Creek Reservation Centre 1800 453 525 [email protected]

Further Important Information (especially for those thinking of a 7 day lift and lesson package)

The race trials event for CGS Snowsports team selection for the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships is going to be held at Falls Creek on the weekend immediately following Family Week ie. Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 July. If your son is going to be a member of the CGS Snowsports team this year and you will be attending Family Week in the week prior, then you will need to consider this when making your accommodation booking i.e. you will need to book for this weekend as well as the five days. Consequently, 7-day lift and lesson packages will be available in addition to the original 5-day option. Alternatively, if you are not going to be part of the CGS Snowsports team this year and you wish to stay for the weekend, you are also welcome to take advantage of the lift and lesson package for the extra two days, and then on the Sunday your family may choose to participate in some fun racing activities that will be organised in conjunction with the race trials.

Please indicate your expression of interest by sending the below information to Michael Heyes on [email protected]. This will ensure you are updated with details closer to the event. Details required are: Parent name(s), telephone numbers (mobile, home and work), email address (regularly checked – this is the most important detail) and names of students likely to attend.

For enquiries please contact: Mr Michael Heyes or Mr David Williamson on 9835 1777.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Camberwell Grammar Junior School is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2017. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc If your son would like to participate please email Ms Michelle Walsh [email protected] with his name and class. You will then receive a letter in the next couple of weeks with your child’s username and password. In the meantime, as the Challenge has commenced, you can make a note of the books being read and these can be added to the PRC page when you receive the log-in details. If you wish to have your child’s name included in the online Honour Roll at the completion of the Challenge, please fill in the attached permission slip and return it to the library. The stick and shin pads will be available for collection from the Development Office on the first day of second term (Wednesday 19 April) after 3.00pm, the first day of winter training is Thursday 20 April.

We have provided three options for stick sizes. The standard international stick size is 36.5 inches. The availability of non-standard size sticks will be limited. You should only select SMALL or LARGE if you son is at the end of the height spectrum shown below. As a golden rule it is best to buy a stick and continue to use it when it is ‘too small’ rather than to buy one and grow into it. For a youth age player (~160-170cm tall) a 36 or 36.5 inch or MEDIUM size stick is recommended due to the fact that their upper body strength is still developing. Nevertheless there are a wide variety of websites with guides related to height, hip height, and arm length. Shin pads will be matched to stick size you have chosen; you do not need to specify a shin pad size. PLEASE NOTE - If parents are unhappy with the size available at the time of pick up and an alternative is not available, FoH will be only too happy to refund the payment in full as long as the stick is not damaged.

New ‘Pay it Forward’ InitiativeFriends of Performing Arts in conjunction with the Music School

Do you have any pre-loved instrumental music books sitting unneeded at home?

Please bring your old instrumental music books to the

Music School Office Friends of Performing Arts and the Music School are collecting pre-loved instrumental music books to recycle to CGS music students. The idea is to build a library at the Music School for teachers to access for students. This initiative is organised by FOPA and we hope that it will foster a sense of community amongst the boys as well as show respect towards the environment by recycling. Any stock that is unable to be used will be included with the Friends of Library annual donation to the Les Twentyman Foundation. Books need to be in reasonable condition with minimal markings. We thank you for your support.
