Somebody just sent out a “searchparty” looking for spring in theNorthwoods; it appears to be
missing or, better yet, it may havebeen completely missed. In theNorthwoods, we went from Maysnowstorms to “get the lawnmower out” in a matter of sec-onds. One of the Heartlandemployees remarked thatthey saw their first robinwearing shades and applyingsunscreen. Yes, summer andHeartland summer station ac-tivities are upon us.
Our resident race expert,Skip Hunter is broadcastinglive from ABC Raceway inAshland as the sound of finely-tuned engines roar by.
The largest inland chain of 28lakes near Eagle River have suddenlyturned into the fishing capital of Wis-consin. The waterskiers have returned andeverywhere you look, pontoon boats gracefullyfloat by. The kayakers are out in numbers nearAshland in the Apostle Island archipelago.Fishing the lakes near Park Falls and Iron River,MI is in full swing. People are having fun!
Eagle River will be dancing all summer withthe weekly Street Dances presented by WRJO,Small Market Station of the Year. This weeklyevent, closing down a downtown street in EagleRiver, attracts hundreds each summer for funand dancing!
In Heartland’s Ashland market, it’s BayDays Festival-Ashland. The Ashland stations
WBSZ, WJJH, WNXR and WATW are a majorsponsor of Bay Days in Ashland in conjunctionwith the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce.This year they are sponsoring the music on theBay by bringing in a rock band, “The Teds,”and making it free to public.
Iron River’s WIKB will be a sponsor of theIron County Rodeo, a professional rodeo draw-ing thousands to the Iron River Rodeo groundsin Iron River in August! Wear your hat andboots!
And in Park Falls, just like clockwork, theHeartland 98Q Country Brewer Bus trip is alsoapproaching. The buses fill up with familieswho get a special treat, a trip to and from MillerPark without having to do the driving. 98QCountry will have 3 buses filled with familiesfrom the Northwoods. In years past we havetaken from one, up to five buses at one time.
All summer long, Heartland’s Northwoodsand UP stations are helping listeners enjoy sum-mer with a non-stop list of activities that bringssmiles to thousands of Heartland listeners!

June is “Father’s Day”month. Most of us, right-fully so, at the mention
of “Father’s Day” immediatelybegin thinkingabout our owndad. For someof us, thoseare past smile-producingmemories andfor others,on-going funtimes plus abunch ofmemories as well. In any case,these thoughts produce feelingsof appreciation and love.
Fathers gave of their timeand, while doing so, they oftentaught us lessons we carrythrough life. I am sure wewatched our fathers closely tosee how they acted or re-sponded to certain situations.In our early years, most of uslearned many things. I remem-ber one time when I was quiteyoung, fighting with my oldestsister in our living room; Imust have hit her in our tussle
and seeing that, my Dad pulledme away from my sister andsat me down making it veryclear to me that boys and mendon’t hit girls and women. Thelecture continued with thingslike you open doors for ladies,you pick up things ladies dropand you show respect forwomen. I remember.
My Dad also taught methings about baseball, footballand basketball. We playedcatch in the yard, shot basketsand watched games on TV to-gether. Growing up in Min-neapolis, I especiallyremember my Dad taking meto the old Triple A MinneapolisMillers’ baseball games and tothe Minneapolis Lakers (nowL.A. Lakers) games played atthe old Armory as well. I amsure that you remember yourfather taking you to ball gamesor hunting and fishing as well.
Today, many of us are nowfathers ourselves. I can’t tellyou how many times I have re-ferred to my father’s examplewhen I shared the responsibil-
ity with my wife parenting ourtwo daughters. If our wonder-ful daughters were adding their“two cents” to this article, theymight immediately tell youhow I asked them to pick uptwigs and leaves out from thestone set around the shrubs inour yard. Both of our daughtershave mentioned, “a time ortwo, the discussions aboutlearning responsibility when
they were young. My guess isthat our daughters have sharedthe “picking up twigs andleaves” story with their ownkids, probably when discussingresponsibility.
I am quite sure all of us havestories about learning lessonsfrom our dads. Like our moth-ers, our fathers gave of theirtime. I was just reflecting onmy Dad coming home fromwork after a strenuous day atthe office. There we were…my sisters, brother and I greet-ing him with enthusiasm andrather loud explanations of theevents of the day. I am sure mypoor father just wanted toloosen his tie, and find his wayto his favorite chair to plunkdown and release some pres-sure before my mother calledeveryone to the dinner table.But, he found the time to listento us… all five of us Coursollekids talking at the same time,probably so loud you couldn’thear a plane fly over.

As I grew older, I began tovalue his time much more thananything he would give me,but that is not to say, I didn’tappreciate the sacrifices hemade to make sure there wereplenty of gifts at Christmas andbirthdays.
My Dad served our countryboth as an FBI agent and lateras a U.S. Naval officer. Hefaced extreme hardship afterreturning to what was left ofhis law practice after the war.To this day, I can still see himlying in bed at home withpneumonia because he couldn’tafford a hospital stay. In those
days, pneumonia was a bitmore serious due to the lack ofmodern antibiotics. Our across-the-street neighbor, and one ofmy Dad’s best friends, was adoctor. He would stop byeveryday to check on my Dad.I know my parents struggledgreatly early on, but their faithin God and their love for eachother and their kids helpedthem through such adversity. Iwatched them and learnedmuch. Together, they gave theirtime to their family.
Their TIME is what I re-member the most… and my fa-ther, along with my mother(they were true partners), gaveof their love as well.
I am sure you have similarstories about your dad and thetime you spent with him grow-ing up. If you are luckyenough, you still get to spendtime with him. This Father’sDay month of June, go a littleoverboard to show your dadjust exactly how much you ap-preciate his time and love. Ifyou have any continuing issueswith your father, how aboutconsidering taking the initialstep toward reconciliation orresolution of those issues?Dads, and for that matter,moms too, are just too impor-tant to let stuff like that linger.One of the things I realized, asI grew older, was that my fa-
ther – like me and everyoneelse – was not perfect. I thinkthat made me love him evenmore.
This Father’s Day month,give of your time to your kidsand to your fathers. It’s justamazing how much that willmean to you in the years tocome. I think I would give any-thing to sit down and talk withmy Dad once again…andsomeday, I plan on doing justthat on a cloud up there some-where.
Please let me wish a “HappyFather’s Day” to all of ourHeartland fathers and dadseverywhere from everyone atHeartland!

tos!! Still beats snowstorms! Me-morial Day always seems to kickoff summer, and Skip Hunter andI kicked it off in Hurley Wiscon-sin for the big Memorial WeekendATV Rally. We did a live broad-cast from the Iron County TrailHead right before the huge ATVparade. There were well over 500ATVs registered for the event. It’salways a huge boost to the econ-omy for the Hurley area and this3-day event grows bigger eachyear.
We are now into June and atthe very beginning of our ManCave Promotion. We will be giv-ing away over $4,000 in ManCave furnishings, including a 55-inch flat screen TV, a solid oakpub bar, a recliner, mini fridge, aDeWalt worksite radio, a vacuumcleaner, a Culligan water cooler,plus a year supply of Pepsi, Millerbeer, beef jerky, pizza and Fa-mous Dave’s Barbecue sauce! Thecontest will run from the week ofJune 9th through July 31st, withthe grand prize given away on Fri-day, August 1st, just in time forpre-season football! We are doingMan Cave live broadcast all overthe Northland. The only way ourlisteners can qualify to win, is toshow up at our 2-hour Man CaveBroadcasts! They can win prizes,get entered and each business willhave a 2-hour “SUPER SPE-CIAL” as added incentive to
come over to the remote! Shouldbe a great promotion. We have 11broadcasts scheduled so far!
We also tied into 8 tickets tosee the Dierks Bentley/Sara EvansConcert at the Bayfront FestivalPark In Duluth. This Dierks Bent-ley tour was rated the Hot Coun-try Tour of the summer! We willbe sending 8 quite happy campersto see Dierks Bentley and SaraEvans on July 10th.
As we come into the middle ofJune, we are expecting tourism tostart kicking in as well. With theamount of school cancelations thispast winter, a lot of them ran laterinto the year to make up the days.The area needs the tourism andwe welcome it with open arms!We are looking forward to a greatsummer.
We are also working on ournew 55+ Health Expo. We com-pletely re-vamped our SeniorExpo. We changed the name, thevenue and the time. So far it beena very positive change. The repsare out there selling booth spaceas we speak. So far it has beenselling well. We are over 50%sold out with the Expo being heldon August 20th!
I want to again thank my entirestaff for their hard work. The salesstaff has been working hard tokeep it rolling, the on air staff hasbeen great in helping out for re-motes, running the boards and ofcourse all of the production thatneeds to be done. I want to wishthem all a very nice 4th of July…a 3-day weekend right now is wel-comed!!

flower baskets she had received forMother’s Day had been stolen. Low andbehold, she called back the next day andthe police had received a tip and the hang-ing baskets were returned to her! Thankyou to WIKB and the local police.

As we get summer underwayhere in the greater North-woods, which has been a
long time coming, I’m not sure whatI prefer right now the nice weatherwith mosquitos or the winter weatherand no mosquitos. There is alwayssomething isn’t there and we arenever satisfied. The guy that inventedthat mosquito zapper must be makinga mint on that product this year!
But never the less we move on andsuck it up and get on with our busi-ness which is getting folks qualifiedfor the famous 98Q Country BackYard Barbeque. This promotion hasbeen a long-standing one here in ourcommunities. Our listeners just lovehaving our staff come to their homeand grill up a meal, on top of win-ning a grill, the food and beveragesand it’s such a great fun time for us,too. It’s easy to put together for apromotion; line up your sponsors toprovide the grill, food and beverages,plus additional prizes for the qualifi-cation party. Then on the air we qual-ify 100 people that must be presentto win. We bring everyone to an out-side venue and line up solo cupsfilled with goodies. On the bottom ofthe cup we have prizes and one thatsays BBQ winner. Everyone draws a
number and randomly chooses a cup.Since you must be present to win weusually have a 90% turn out. Onlyone year since we have been runningthis contest did the winner drawearly. It is a very good summer pack-age revenue builder. We alwaysmake a few grand plus prizes.
I also want to share with yousomething that happened this weekto us that is so heartwarming and un-expected. The Commander of Ameri-
can Veterans AMVETS Post 500 inPark Falls just awarded 98Q Countrywith the 3rd annual CommunityRecognition Award for 2014. Themessage on this beautiful plaque says“Presented to 98Q Country WCQMfor your dedication and support ofveterans and the ongoing support forveterans programs that you give inPark Falls Wisconsin.” This is suchan honor to be recognized in this waybecause you just never know howsimple kind deeds affect the lives ofpeople.
