A brief history of the Village of Harvey
1837
Harvey Settlement was established in the area by immigrants from
the Wooler area of the English/Scottish border, named for Sir John
Harvey who was the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick at the
time.
1869
The railway line running through Harvey was completed leading to
a number of businesses as well as a train station being built in the
present Village area.
1966
The Village of Harvey was incorporated.

The railroad was operational through Harvey Station by 1869 and included a
train station. In 1962, a decision was made to dismantle the station. Part of it
was moved to Herbert’s cove on Harvey Lake where it was used as a cottage.

currently run by Winston
Gamblin as a general store
much in the original way.
This heritage building no
longer exists. It went through
several owners including Sam
Hunter, Richard, Williard, Inez
and Mary Jane Davis. The
Davis store was closed in
1967 and was eventually
passed on to Gerry Piercy.

The Tweedside School was a one
room schoolhouse where children
from the area attended grades 1 to
6. The school was heated by a
wood stove. The bathroom was an
outhouse. The students hauled
pails of drinking water in the
morning from Hazen Patterson’s
house next door. The school
closed around 1967 when the new
elementary school in Harvey
became operational.

Harvey area. By late 1920s, early 1930’s every
farm in the area (approximately 150) had either
purebred or nearly purebred Jerseys as their
cream producers. 18 purebred herds remained
in 1970.
