He is allergic to rose hips and we found one vitamin C with rose hips, one that said vitamin C (as ascorbic acid), and one that said vitamin C (as calcium ascorbate). What is ascorbic acid and calcium ascorbate, and does that mean it does not contain rose hips? Thanks so much for your help! – Dan Nobel, Max Muscle Brentwood, MO A: Rose hips are the fruit of the rose plant and contain vitamin C. If a supplement contains rose hips, that product is legally required by law to list rose hips in the supplement facts panel, so if the customer is allergic, the vitamin C as ascorbic acid or the calcium ascorbate vitamin C product would be great alternatives. Ascorbic acid is the most common form of vitamin C, but as stated in the name, it is acidic. Calcium ascorbate is a “gently buffered” form of vitamin C (comparable to Ester-C, a popular branded product), which is common when the acidic form of vitamin C causes stomach upset. The calcium ascorbate is a gentler form of vitamin C. Q: I have a customer who can't have anything with oxalates ASKDR.HARVEY in it because of a kidney issue. Do you know if our whey protein has oxalate in it? – Jon Meyer, Max Muscle Placerville, CA. A: First, here is a little bit of oxalate education: Oxalates are salts or esters of oxalic acid. They bind with minerals forming nonabsorbable complexes that can af- fect kidney function if someone has these issues. Your customer most likely knows more about high oxalate foods than both of us, but oxalate levels tend to be high in rhubarb, gooseberries, citrus peel, swiss chard, cassava root, spinach, parsley, okra, beer, coffee, cocoa/ chocolate, most nuts, peanut butter, etc. Since oxalates are high in cocoa/ chocolate, they should not use this flavor of protein. I would recommend to stay with vanilla flavors of proteins. Q: Just a quick question for you regarding Max Vit- Acell Antioxidant: does it contain caffeine? Or is it caffeine free? – Ted Dehmlow, Max Muscle Woodbury, MN. A: Our Vit-Acell Citrus, Vit-Acell Antioxidant, Pro Shield and Pro Essential do not contain any caffeine. Only our Vit-Acell Energy contains caffeine at 100 mg per serving. Q: Does Max Nitro 2 have any caffeine? – Girolomo Bevinetto A: Max Nitro 2 does not contain caffeine.
