Mayor’s Welcome Welcome to the 24th annual Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver. Our community hosts this perennial summer highlight, which runs for 10 days from August 1 to 10 and features an array of visual art events, musical performances, outdoor movies, kids’ activities and culinary arts experiences. This year’s expanded festival is bursting at the seams with 150 musicians performing more than 70 free concerts. We have over 400 visual artists exhibiting works and guiding visitors through art creations of their own through ArtSpeaks workshops and drop-in activities for young artists.

Food-lovers will enjoy the new Fresh St. Art of Food, which fills Argyle Avenue from August 5 to 7 with a culinary experience featuring over 35 chefs, restaurants, food vendors, unique wines, craft beers and more. Another culinary highlight is the new Park Royal Beachside Patio, with food by Glowbal Group’s Fish Shack and hosted by house wine. You’ll find it right next to the existing Waterfront Lounge. The waterfront will be full of outdoor spaces in which to sit and to enjoy the festival’s vibrant energy.

Kids stay happy at the festival with drop-in art workshops and the new RE/MAX Harmony Kids Camp too! We thank Odlum Brown Limited, now in their 13th year as the festival’s presenting sponsor. Their commitment continues to elevate the festival to new heights, with the additional support of 50 other sponsors and suppliers and over 100 businesses. We also thank our dedicated volunteers and staff for their efforts in making this a great event. Let’s get ready for an unforgettable Harmony season!

Mayor Michael Smith

The Park Royal Beachside Patio is a new contemporary space on the west side of Millennium Park.

This beautiful space will host the Glowbal Group’s The Fish Shack, a licensed dining area with 60 seats and plenty of stand-up space around the perimeter, with drinks selected by house wine.

The patio will be the centre of a contemporary art exhibition by Matthew Soules, curated by the West Vancouver Museum. The project provides a new and alternative way to present art and creative thinking in a non-gallery environment.

Vermilion Sands, designed by Matthew Soules Architecture is a temporary space installation that will transform Millennium park into an engaging spatial environment during the Harmony Arts Festival. Vermillion Sands, comprised of a canopy of living plants, will filter the August sun, providing cool shade while animating the park with dynamic and dappled shadows. the canopy is composed of a series of repeating shapes that collectively form a geometric pattern akin to a landscape. the project is influenced by the early days of west coast Modernism, when innovators like Bc Binning created dazzling patterns that were inspired by the landscape. the title of the work is derived from a collection of short stories by JG Ballard.

WAterfront loungeThe Waterfront Lounge, located in the heart of the action, is the central gathering space for visitors looking to sip and socialize, and to enjoy a unique waterfront experience like no other.

Home to the PARC Retirement Living Garden Stage; the lounge offers musical entertainment every day and night of the festival.

Food served by Caffé Al Mercato, with drinks selected by house wine.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 5 Music and performance day!

Let’s get those bodies moving as we explore how art is created through music, dance and acting. With a guest musician to help us out, today we’ll be creating our own musical instruments and learning to make music with them.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6 Painting day!

Let’s start off the week messy. Make sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty as this day will be dedicated to exploring different ways

of painting. Using paintings and the seaside as our inspiration, budding artists will take their sketchbooks to the festival to sketch outside.

The NEW Kids Camp brings kids age 7 to 12 years old an opportunity to experience the creative process within a festival setting. Up to 20 young artists will explore the arts and be inspired by the artists, creations and performances that Harmony has to offer. This camp is for aspiring artists interested in expanding their experience in the visual (painting, drawing, textiles, sculpture), performing and culinary arts. The home base for this camp will be on the water’s edge at Lawson Creek studios, adjacent to the very popular John Lawson Park. On Friday, August 8, the last day of the camp, campers will have the opportunity to display and sell their creations in the heart of the Fresh st. Art Market.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 7 Sculpture day!

Another messy day, we will explore how to create art through sculpture. Using the weird and wonderful art that the festival has to offer as inspiration, artists will create their own sculptures using various materials.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 8 Cooking day and exhibition day!

You don’t only have to get messy in the studio to make art. You can also create art in the kitchen. Today is the day to learn about strange and delicious food combinations to create a new culinary treat.

On the final day, you have a chance to work on your favourite project or create something new to be installed in an exhibition that will run for the remainder of the festival.

Creative Kids Day is a special day for kids and families with plenty of activities at John Lawson Park.On-going performing and visual arts activities including live music, storytelling, crafting and drama.
