HARBOR CLUB LADIES LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP

As the new President of Harbor Club Ladies League, it is my pleasure to invite all Harbor Club ladies to join us for an ex-citing and fun new year. The other Ladies League Board members are: Patty Monteleone, Vice President; Dottie Suggs, Secretary; Patricia Balduff, Treasurer. As most of you know, our programs begin in September and end in May of each year. The first program for this year is on September 15 in the Polo Grill. This will be a very special kick-off luncheon that you will not want to miss. I appreciate all the ladies who have volunteered to help on the committees that plan each month’s program. Volunteer sign-up sheets for other committees will be circulated at the opening luncheon, and I urge each of you to become active participants on one or more of these committees. The board requests that you pay your dues ($20) as soon as possible to facilitate publication of the Harbor Club Ladies League Directory. In order to receive a directory at the October luncheon, all members, new and old, must pay their dues by August 30. Please mail your check for $20 (made payable to HCLL) to me, Joyce Johnson at 2711 Club Drive, or simply put it in my mailbox. Please include your name, address, telephone number, cell number, month & day of birth and current email address with your dues. We look forward to the coming year and many fun and exciting events. Sincerely, Joyce Johnson, President HCLL

AROUND AND ABOUT IN

HARBOR CLUB With Judy Stultz

We’ve experienced such changeable weather this season. April brought us the stunning Bradford Pears, dogwoods and redbuds, then rain, hail and cold temperatures put in an unwelcome appearance ending our show of spring flowers. June brought us a heat wave, foretelling weather yet to come. April was a busy month for Harbor Club ladies. The HCLL April meeting committee invited Tippi McMichael of Weinbergers to show the newest and latest in interior design. Several HCLL members took a road trip to North Carolina visiting Asheville and the fabulous Biltmore House. They encountered a warm reception and refreshingly cool weather as they toured, shopped, wined and dined. A warm Saturday morning greeted bargain shoppers as they crowded the Harbor Club stable yard for the Outreach Yard Sale. Thanks to the untiring efforts of Carol Fick, Sandra Glass,

Nancy Stefurak and their helpers the sale was a great success ~ enabling donations to be made to many of our local charities. A poolside Style Show highlighted the HCLL May meeting with the very latest summer fashions from Fishtales, Tiny Fishtales and Madeline Page. Along with models Annie Benise, Sheila Connelly, Rita Jones, Donna Jean Kendall, Beth Layson, Terri Ligon, Lois Miller, Jane Preston, Evie Schoepf and Dottie Suggs was cute little Austin Dell, son of our own Angela Dell.

Harbor Club’s MGA hosted their Awards Banquet and the 3rd. annual Blue-Gray Tournament in May. That was also the month for the Member/Guest tournament ~ 3days of golf, camaraderie and parties closing with an awards/dinner/dance on Saturday evening. Harbor Club’s LGA’s Member/Member Tournament was chaired by last year’s winners, Carol Gordon and Fran Schroeder. Fran hosted a casual get-together in her home the evening before the event. Winners, Diane Roberts and Janel McCullers will host next years tournament. Ex President George Bush and his wife Laura made an unexpected visit to downtown Greensboro on May 18th. surprising many of the local residents. Our own Louise and Bill Hull were among those to meet and greet them. (Jane Kokoska reports that Laura is much prettier in person than as seen in photos and TV shots.) The HC pool officially opened on May 23rd, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend crowd. Members, their guests and fami-lies showed up for the festivities and to celebrate the holiday. A wonderful Kids Festival & Movie day was held for all Harbor Club kids and grandkids at the Carriage House & Stables in June. A great treat for kids and grandparents too! New to the Lake Country this year ~ MOVIES (we finally have a theater!). Tuesday’s ~ all movies all day for $5, (if in 3-D it’s $2 more). Also, every Tues. & Weds. at 10 AM, two Free movies (one G & one GP ). They’re older movies but ones the young-sters will probably love seeing on the Big Screen with grandma and grandpa. This bargain runs from June 2nd. thru August 5th. Also new ~ The Roadhouse Concerts at the Lake Welcome Center with Live Music every Friday and Saturday Night in a cozy cabaret setting. Linda Grant tells me it’s a great way to spend an evening. There’s something for everyone here in Harbor Club this season; Golf, Couples Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Croquet, Bocce Ball and Boating. Indoors it’s bridge, bunco, bingo and books. (Book exchange to be found in the Clubhouse Aerobics room.) Y’all keep cool, kick back and enjoy your Summer! Judy

YÜÉÅ àx Wxá~ Éy àx ZxÇxÜtÄ `tÇtzxÜ‹ Harbor Club continues to offer a $3,000 referral fee to any property owner who comes to the sales office and registers a referral resulting in the sale of a Harbor Company owned property. The credit may be used at Harbor Club’s pro shop, club restaurant, or applied to the referee’s membership dues. A regis-tered referral is a referral that is not currently listed in the Harbor Club sales database. We encourage you to come by our sales office, visit our agents, and take advantage of this great offer. The summer edition of Georgia’s Lakelife (Summer 2009 · FREE) features University of Georgia President Dr. Mi-chael and wife, Mary, Adams “Kicking Back Off-Campus” at their Harbor Club lakefront home. The story and photos by Judy Maxwell, Eatonton Messenger editor, tell the story of “. . . a relationship that was meant to be” where friends and family make the full house that both Dr. Adams and Mary enjoy. Former great Atlanta Brave and major league Home Run King Henry “Hank” Aaron has accepted an honorary mem-bership at Harbor Club. Hank is great friends with Harbor Club resident and former major league player and coach, Clarence Jones. Harbor Club recently hosted the first Lake Oconee Bulldog Club Mark Richt Golf Tournament. Thanks to Mr. Lowell White and his staff for all their hard work in making this tournament a great success. Also, thanks to the many Harbor Club members who participated in this event. Additionally, Harbor Club hosted the University of Georgia’s Bulldog tournament for the tenth consecutive year. Go DAWGS! Harbor Club resident Bob Chiu and his staff did a great job in making the Tony Flannagan Fundraiser a big suc-cess. Friends from all over north and middle Georgia participated in the event to show support for Tony who is a can-cer patient. Harbor Club ownership, John and Brandon Matney, gave a major contribution for this worthy cause. Tony and mom, Hug, are former Harbor Club food and beverage operators. They currently own and operate Hug’s in Har-mony Crossings. Harbor Club will soon begin work to repair and paint Lighthouse Point Pavilion. The covered bridge, located on the main entrance to Harbor Club, is also scheduled to receive new paint. Harbor Club ISMG security personnel have received many compliments on the great service they provide Harbor Club residents.

Harbor Club ownership, administration, and staff wish each of you a safe, happy, and healthy summer 2009.

FROM THE LESSON TEE… PUTTING—Myths that Make You Miss. Next time you watch a tournament telecast, try hitting the mute button when players reach the green. If you don’t, you may hear a barrage of “putting myths”. Here is one of my favorites. MYTH—“Keep the putter head low back and through.” RESULT—If you interfere with the natural swing arc and force the putter head along the ground, it stops swinging on its own. REALITY—With a traditional reverse-overlap grip (right hand below left), your shoul-ders tilt slightly away from the target at address. As a result, the putter head stays slightly lower on the backstroke, than it does on the forward stroke. TRY THIS—Feel like the putter head swings itself, like the pendulum of a grandfather clock. It will come up naturally during the forward stroke. Grant A. Gaalema, PGA

MGA News….

Congratulations to the winners of the first MGA Two Man Winter Nine Hole Match Play Glenn Kendall & Bill Frain, and runner ups Walter Jones and Al Oram. 32 MGA members participated in this cash prize tournament. The MGA Match Play Champion-ship commenced in April and continues through a September end date. A record 52 MGA members signed up to play in the most difficult championship event of the year for both bragging rights and the handsome MGA Crystal Trophy. The 28 March MGA Spring Member-Member was cancelled by untimely rain, but the normal fare of Spring tourna-ments rolled on. Congratulations to the winners of another Crystal Trophy major, the Harbor Club Dogwood Cup on 18 April- Jack Demyan and Roger Glass (net). 39 MGA members played. Congratulations to Captain Jim Davis and the Blue Team , win-ner's of the MGA Blue Gray Match Play Tournament played on Saturday & Sunday 2 & 3 May. 46 MGA members and both Golf Professionals played. The margin of victory was 57 to 51 points. The victory by the Blue team was three years in the making, al-most as long as the original war of Northern /Southern aggression, preceded by Gray victories in 2007 & 2008. Captain Roger Glass and the Gray Team are congratulated for providing spirited and sometimes sassy competition. Congratulations also to the winners of the Harbor Club Memorial Day Tournament played 25 May - Kenny Hyatt & Doug Price, Richard Schaeffel & Gary Williams (net). 54 MGA members and 76 overall played. The first 2009 MGA Member Appreciation Day was Saturday June 6. After play day, we bought lunch for 32 hungry MGA Members. A couple of changes were made to MGA Summer Play Days to provide competitive golf with the widest appeal to all MGA members: Two flights emphasizing more play from the Blue Tees on Saturdays, and start times rolled back to 0830 AM to provide a bigger MGA shotgun capacity, minimize interference with the mowing crew, encourage out a few more in the AM, and still avoid the high heat of the Georgia Summer. The more members at play day the better! Revised start time summary: MGA Play Days (Wednesday & Saturday), Tuesday & Friday Morning Games 0830 AM. Thursday Morning Game 1000 AM. Sunday Morning Game 0900 AM....and the Friday Noon Game ! Upcoming Summer tournaments include the MGA Summer Sizzler two man triple format on June 20, the 4th of July holi-day Harbor Club Stars and Stripes Shootout 3 person alternate shot elimination on Friday 3 July, and the two person Harbor Club Firecracker Scramble on 4 July, both open to HC members and guests. The two man best ball MGA Summer Member-Member is scheduled for 18 July, and mark your calendar for the MGA Scholarship Fund Tournament on Saturday 8 Au-gust. Get your four man scramble team out to continue support of scholarships for the best qualified local High School Golf Team members - $50 per person entry fee. Summer finishes up with two more Crystal Trophy major events - the Men's Senior Harbor Club Championship on 22 August and the Men's Harbor Club Championship on 19 September , ...but just ahead are the ever popular MGA two day events, the MGA Dirty Dozen and the MGA Oktoberfest tournament and dinner. A message from my Club Handicap Chairman hat: Turn in "valid" scorecards to the Pro Shop that contain your last name, the date, tees played and a totaled score!! If a card cannot be identified for all of your name entries on the Pro Shop tee sheet, you will receive the penalty of the lowest score in last twenty !! Having more valid cards than name entries on the tee sheet is odd, but not a handicap problem -all valid cards will be entered. If there is no date it is very hard to match up, if there is no last name and no date, you have a snowball's chance in Georgia of avoiding a penalty score, because nobody can figure out who's card it is. If you did not total your score, you are just being rude to the Pro Shop staff, a rarity for the golfing gentleman I know in this club. Do bet-ter with your scorecard and your handicap will be better. Signup NO LATER THAN Noon the day before MGA playdays ! See you around the scoreboard! Hit'em Straight!!

Harbor Club’s 2009 Men’s Member/Guest The 2009 Harbor Club Member Guest was held on May 14-16. Sixty participants competed in this years tournament. Member Griffin Fol-som and Guest Kenny Folsom fought a hard battle in the final shoot out against four other flight winning teams and ultimately were crowned the 2009 Harbor Club Member Guest Champions. Thank you to Grant Gaalema, Golf Pro, the Pro Shop staff - Doug, Denise & Rus-sell, the cart boy & beverage cart staff. Thanks also to JR McCroskey and grounds keeping staff for fast greens and great playing conditions. And a job well done to Tournament Chairman Bob Welsh and Club Event Coordinator Angela Dell. Jim Brown & the Polo Grill staff put out a great meal for the Awards Banquet which included a spirited rec-ognition of all the above winners and dancing to the Deraney Band.

LGA News... The Ladies Golf Association held its annual Member/Member tournament June 4. Last years winners, Carol Gordon and Fran Schroeder were this year’s tournament organizers. The event started the night before with a ”Picnic in the Grove” at the Schroeder home. There the players working on their game psychology while enjoying food and beverages. The tournament – A Celebration of Southern Belles – had a field of 36 18 hole players and 6 9 hole players. The format for the 18 hole players was a mix of 6 holes best ball, 6 holes of alternate shot and 6 holes as a scramble, for the 9 hole players the same format was used on a 3-3-3 basis. The event turned into a test of friendship and endurance. As the players teed off Thursday morning, the skies opened and a deluge was let loose. Undaunted, the women persevered; all players completed the tournament. At the end of the event, the LGA celebrated the new Member/Member winners, Diane Roberts and Janel McCull-ers. But as they say, winning isn’t everything, in addition to being crowned Member/Member Champions, Diane and Janel are now scheduled to be next years Member/Member Tournament organizers. Congratulations, Diane and Janel!
