Extraordinary Nursing MomentsAs a CGHMC DAISY co-coordinatorit has been my joy to help inimplementing the DAISY International Award for Extraordinary Nurses. As you may know, any nurse may benominated by a patient, family member, visitor, fellow nurse, doctor, or other CGHMC employee. Literally, anyone can nominate a nurse online beginning at the CGHMC home page. Listening to a patient’snomination letter of their nurse evokes strong emotions such as awe and pride. Equally so is seeing our CGHnurses displayed on the DAISY international web site each quarter. Such an honor! The observer will agree, a nurse’s very simple action can mean infinitely more to thepatient/family. A nurse’s compassion, strength and critical thinking skills are truly a thing to behold.

As I get more acquainted with our DAISY winners and nominees, there is a realization of how deeply our CGH nurses care for their patients and co-workers alike.Without listing any names, read on for the heart felt words of our CGH DAISY nurses.

“I would say that “my wish for my patients is that their experience with us is the best it can be. Whether they are here for a day, or a week; on good terms, or bad; I hope my patients feel well cared for during their stay.”

“I wish for all patients to receive the comfort, care, and respect they need when they are here at CGH!”

“My hope for each patient is to have the best experience with the birth of their child and make memories that they will treasure for the rest of their lives and share with family and friends.”

“When talking and seeing our patients, my goal as a nurse is for my patients to always feel comfortable with their care. I am always reassuring them, there isn’t any question that is “stupid” which I always hear. They should be able to confide in me knowing I am listening. Patients should always end a discussion or walk away knowing all their questions have been answered, medical needs have been resolved (or in process) and feel a relief of any fear they may have had. We as nurses jobs are to help make a difference. I am a true patient advocate. My patients medical care and their feelings will always come first.”

“I hope there is a way for my patient who receivestreatment twice weekly to see her child who lives in an-other state and she hasn’t seen for three years.”

These are the wishes of DAISY nurses. There are manyDAISY moments unfolding everyday around each of us.If you believe that you have witnessed a truly specialinteraction, please nominate that nurse. Nurses do not work for the recognition or gratitude, but a nod that they have impacted a life in a positive way does surely put a spring in one’s step.

Jill Bryan, a certifiednursing assistant (CNA) in CGH Medical Center’s Digestive Health Center, was recently recognized as a recipient of the Sunshine Award for extraordinaryservice. The Sunshine Award was created tohonor and recognizeoutstanding service and compassionate care by those in non-nursing roles, such as CNA’s, CMA’s, or CMT’s. “I am a nurse and have worked with Jill for several years,” said the nominator. “Jill is a GI tech who assists the doctor during GIprocedures, and as such she is in the procedure room when the patient arrives. From the moment the patient enters the room, Jill is respectful, attentive and friendly to the patient, and I so appreciate how she does her part to help alleviate the patient’s anxiety. I believe the patient should be the center of attention in every case, and Jill exemplifies that with every patient. I appreciate you Jill!” If you would like to submit a nomination for extraordinary service that you or a family member have received at CGH Medical Center by a staff member in a non-nursing role, please visit www.cghmc.com/sunshine.
