THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Next weekend, the arch/diocese will be taking up the National Collection for the Catholic University of America. The National Collection not only supports students but also helps the University serve dioceses and parishes through innovative research initiatives and training programs, such as The Catholic Project—an initiative that aims to heal the breach of trust many have experienced as a result of the current crisis in the Church, an online Child Protection Certificate Program, a Master’s program in Ecclesial Administration and Management for clergy, and a credentialing program that prepares recent graduates to serve as campus ministers.

PARTNER PARISHES STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Sunday Offertory: August 15-16

SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME It seems strange that Jesus would tell his disciples not to reveal that he was the Christ (the Messiah). After all, isn’t that the point? But the problem was that many people of the time had different ideas about what the Messiah was supposed to be. So Jesus spent a lot of time trying to persuade people to rethink the whole concept of the Messiah. Most people thought (or feared) that the Messiah was going to be a warrior who would restore the dynasty of King David over Israel.

Jesus had to redefine Messiah for them in light of the prophecies of Isaiah chapter 53, concerning the one who suffers for the sake of others. Jesus would achieve victory through suffering. Until people understood that, he could not risk a misunderstanding. Peter had a partial understanding, though not through his own insight. It was revealed to him by God. And so in this passage we see the twofold foundation of the Church: Scripture (revelation from God) and tradition (personified in the Apostles, and especially Peter).

Most Catholics are familiar with this Gospel passage as the moment when Jesus makes Peter the first leader of the Apostles, giving him authority, which is symbolized by the image of keys. But there is something else equally important here. Jesus made a promise to Peter and the other Apostles that the Church will be built on a rock (see Matthew 7:23-25), and “the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” This means that the forces of evil will never completely overcome the Church—the Church will never cease being the Church. So the authority given to Peter and the Apostles came with a promise that we can trust them and their successors to help us understand who Jesus is, and how to live as his disciples.

PARISH INCOME Please be aware that the incomes of all three parishes has decreased in the last two fiscal years and the ordinary income has not been enough to pay our ordinary bills. The parishes did well this Spring, in light of the pandemic and the quarantine, but all 3 would be in debt if it were not for the Payroll Protection Loans that we got from the government. We need every parish family or household to support the parish. Even $2 - $5 from people who have been giving nothing would make a difference. If you are still not coming to Mass in person, please consider mailing in your offertory donations or setting up a monthly BILL PAY to the parish directly from your checking account. Your parishes need each of you to support them as you can. THANKS

THROUGH YOUR GIFT TO THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, YOU OPEN YOUR EYES TO SEE, YOUR EARS TO HEAR

AND YOUR HEARTS TO EXPERIENCE JESUS’ PRESENCE

IN YOUR DAILY LIFE.

SERVING OUR COUNTRY. Please pray for our men and women in the military: MSgt Matthew Leightner, Col. Ross Monta, John Newcomb, Master Sgt. Jeremy Morgan, Ryan Nagg, Daniel Henderson, Tech. Sgt. Justin Morgan, Tyler Carnahan, Bartholomew Marsh-Slavin, Jacob DeSanders, W01 Jacob Berg (Afghanistan), Brandon May, Tyler Kunkle (Afghanistan), Martin Novak, Jr.

IN SYMPATHY: Our Partner Parish family extends their deepest sympathy to the family of Gertrude Bankosh who died recently. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

There will be a meeting of the St. Sylvester Centennial Committee on Tuesday, August 25th starting at 6:30 PM in the upstairs meeting room. Anyone not already a member of this committee is most welcome to join us!

St. Sylvester Centennial Committee—is sponsoring a raffle ticket for a homemade quilt and other homemade items. The ticket donation is $5.00 with two numbers on the ticket. Tickets may be purchased after Mass at St. Sylvester. For more information, contact Bridget @ 724-771-5616.

Please keep Fr. John Harrold in your prayers as he has recently recovered from COVID-19. Fortunately, Fr. John

suffered only mild symptoms including sore throat and cough. It is unknown how he contracted the virus. He has

been cleared by the CDC to return to pastoral ministry already but in an abundance of caution, will not celebrate

Mass publically until all symptoms are gone and he gets a negative test result for Covid-19.

In the months leading up to the diagnosis, Fr. John followed diocesan policies of wearing face coverings and hand

hygiene during distribution of Communion and adherence to social distancing to minimize the spread of any

infectious disease in his Parishes. He is thankful for the support from his parishioners during this difficult time.
