discusses leadership in different contexts, how it may differ from related

Let's face it there are times when all of us need to get other people to see thingsslightly differently, or to get them to do something we need them to do. Thereare also times when we need to negotiate conditions, timings or price and here itcan be vital to be able to get what you want.

Most people's jobs require them to influence other people a lot of the time. Thebest influencers have good interpersonal and communication skills and an abilityto get other people to wantto give their support. The best negotiators aresubtle, fair and know what to give away, when to make demands and how tocompensate when there are difficulties.Expanding your sphere of influence* Compensation rather than compromise

    * Personal Negotiation strategy* Making impactful briefings* Creating the right first impression* Using pressure rather than coercion* Seeing the other point of view* Using status to stay in charge* Knowing what to give away* Creating a circle of champions* Understanding group dynamics* Giving positive feedback* Making "weaknesses" work for you

Numeracy Numeracy is the ability to reason with numbers and other mathematicalconcepts. Theportmanteau of "numerical literacy" was coined in 1959 by

the UK Committee on Education, presided over by Sir Geoffrey Crowther.[1]

Innumeracy is a lack of numeracy.[2]

Numeracy is a proficiency which is developed mainly in mathematics but also in

other subjects. It is more than an ability to do basic arithmetic. It involves

developing confidence and competence with numbers and measures. It requires

understanding of the number system, a repertoire of mathematical techniques, and

an inclination and ability to solve quantitative or spatial problems in a range of

contexts. Numeracy also demands understanding of the ways in which data are

gathered by counting and measuring, and presented in graphs, diagrams, charts and

    tables.

Planning Planning in organizations andpublic policy is both the organizationalprocess of creating and maintaining aplan; and the psychological process of

thinking about the activities required to create a desired goal on some scale.

As such, it is a fundamental property ofintelligent behavior. This thought

process is essential to the creation and refinement of aplan, or integration of

it with other plans, that is, it combines forecasting of developments with the

preparation of scenarios of how to react to them.

Task 5 Using feedback to improve own effectiveness

Briefly describe the following feedback technique, and give an example of it.

SelfAssessment Planning your career involves making decisions that are right for you. This

    includes: Being ready and taking responsibility for your own career planning;

    Knowing how to make career decisions; Knowing about yourself, what you want and what you can bring to acareer;

Finding out about the career youre interested in.

    FormalFeedback

Observations over a period of time or for specific purposes (e.g. appraisal, end of

attachment interviews) are typical situations when formal feedback occurs in the

clinical setting. Teachers may also be required to participate in formal clinical and non-

clinical assessments which ideally should incorporate feedback to the learner.

If ongoing feedback has been carried out regularly, then the formal feedback sessions

should not contain any surprises for the learners. Feedback can be given on a one-to-

one basis or in small groups. The structure for giving feedback will be agreed between

you and the learner(s), and may follow one of the models described above. It is also

important that both you and the people to whom you are giving feedback are fully

    prepared for the session.

    InformalFeedback

. Why collect informal feedback? From time to time, staff wish to evaluate aspects of theirteaching or identify areas of student understanding ormisunderstanding well before the end of a paper. Thestandard Victoria University evaluation system of teachingand end-of-course questionnaires are unable to successfullyidentify these aspects because:

    they are carried out at or near the end of a course. Thusproblems are not identified until too late and changescannot be made until the course is offered again;

students know that the feedback they provide will notbe of personal benefit; and

information is general and provides little in the way ofdetail on specific aspects of teaching and learning.Informal feedback is offered as an alternative method. It isentirely formative, although information gained in this way

could be usefully incorporated into a teaching portfolio forpromotion/probation purposes. The information collected

    Task 9 Transferable Skills

Give advice on how to communicate effectively in each of the following:

    Verbal

    communication

    Advice

The basis of communication is the interaction between people.Verbal communication is one way for people to communicateface-to-face. Some of the key components of verbalcommunication are sound, words, speaking, and language. At birth, most people have vocal cords, which produce sounds. As a child grows it learns how to form these sounds intowords. Some words may be imitative of natural sounds, butothers may come from expressions of emotion, such aslaughter or crying. Words alone have no meaning. Only peoplecan put meaning into words. As meaning is assigned to words, language develops, which leads to the development of

speaking. The actual origin of language is subject to considerablespeculation. Some theorists believe it is an outgrowth of groupactivities such as working together or dancing. Others believethat language developed from basic sounds and gestures.

    1. Face to Face Face to face is the method of having a conversation directly in frontof you like in interviewing and a one to one chat both people are infull view of each other.

    2. In a group

Small groups have been described and studied in a number of contexts suchas work groups, parties and other event-based or social situations. Most

small groups fall under one or more categories: The task group, the

relationship group and the influence group. The task group is more of a

committee meeting, set up to accomplish a task, such as a Local School

Council. The relationship group is more of a meeting of people for the

enjoyment of each other's company, such as a gourmet club. The influence

group focuses on bettering yourself and those around you, group members

have influence over each other, such as a self help group.

    3. On thetelephone

On the phone is another way of communicating but the differencesare they are held on one to one basis and without any visual effecte

toward each other so we can only hear the other party but unable tosee them.

    Task 1 0 Written communication

    a. List the different documents you may need to read at work

    1. Written Communication

Written communication skills - the ability to express ourselves effectively when we write, is

recognized as being a vital business skill. Most of us communicate extensively by writing: emails,

memos, reports, articles, papers etc.Good written communication skills are essential for both:

Public and private sector organizations - communicating with customers, shareholders and

stakeholders; writing proposals for contracts and tendering for business; developing and sustaining

    partnerships and alliances.

Individuals - managers and professionals looking to improve both internal and external

communications as well as coaching their teams. Also business professionals developing their skills

and looking to increase their value' to their employers. When we write something down we are

inevitably telling our reader a great deal about ourselves. It is therefore extremely important that

our writing skills do not let us down.

service, a person or any other artifact or entity.

Brands have become increasingly important components of culture and the economy, nowbeing described as "cultural accessories and personal philosophies".

I will do my best to protect college Name and Brand. How the brand owner wants the consumer to perceive the brand - and by extension the branded

Gatwick is expected to expand to handle around 40 million passengers by

    2008.

low cost airline in Europe. Total revenue in 2002 was more than 500 million,

an increase over the previous year of nearly 200 million.

The purchase of Go Fly is expected to result in greater frequencies of flights on

existing routes and infilling between existing destinations - what easyJet calls

'joining the dots'. So no new city destinations are expected to be added to their

    network.

Increased capacity within the easyJet network has to be met by making the

existing fleet of aircraft work harder, or by adding more aircraft to their fleet.

easyJet has opted for this latter choice. In October 2002 the company selected

Airbus as their chosen supplier of new aircraft. They propose to order 120

A319s over a five year period, from the second half of 2003. This news is

expected to have secured the jobs of UK workers making aircraft wings and

other components in Broughton, North Wales and Filton, Bristol.

    Aim

As a successful service-based business, easyJet has built its performance onthe following set of standards that it believes underpins its market offering:

    Customer service and safety

    Simple fare structure

    Low unit costs

    Strong branding

    Strong corporate culture

    Multi-base network
