The Poydras PromiseWinter 2013
D ear Patrons,Exciting things are happening at Poydras Home as we completely revitalize our historic campus inside and
out. Construction continues to move along at an impressive clip. Our new assisted living building, Oak House, will soon enlarge residence capacity by 40 percent, creating 33 additional state-of-the-art accommodations for Assisted Living (Classic) and Assisted Living Memory Support. We will also undertake impressive renovations of the Historic Building and nursing rooms in the 60s Wing this year. This largest capital expansion project in our nearly 200-year history would not have been possible without tremendous foresight and planning.
The Board undertook a year-long project in 2012 to develop, finalize and approve a five-year strategic plan for Poydras Home based upon the organization’s mission as well as its reputation as a leader in elder and dementia care. This plan will guide the short-term and long-term decisions of the organization to further the Board’s vision for Poydras Home’s future successes. This vision includes maintaining full occupancy of our campus facilities, building a dynamic volunteer program, providing continued financial stability and expanding community outreach.
Our planning also makes ample allowances for the unexpected. The 2012 hurricane season produced 19 named storms, of which 10 became hurricanes. Hurricane Isaac was the only storm to make landfall in Louisiana last season and it compromised our emergency generators and inflicted moderate damage to the roof of the Historic Building as well as several rooms in the 90s Wing. Repairs were completed quickly and most of our residents returned to Poydras Home in just a few days. To strengthen the critical components of our backup emergency power capabilities, the Board approved a comprehensive upgrade to the system, adding two new state-of-the-art generators designed to perform in the very toughest conditions. Installation and testing will be completed before the start of this year’s hurricane season. For 2013, we will continue to identify critical priorities, thinking strategically to sustain Poydras Home for decades to come.
We remain deeply grateful for our dedicated trustees, patrons, sponsors, donors, families, volunteers and supporters who showed their support in 2012 by contributing to the Art Show and Annual Appeal. In addition, the generous and lasting impact of your bequests, grants and gifts-in-kind also help provide financial stability to Poydras Home and enable us to continue our excellent quality of care and offer even more engaging programs for our residents. By boosting the sponsorship and donation levels built in recent years, we intend to continue to enhance the financial success and future of this organization that has stood the test of time for more than 195 years. Your gifts and your support are vital to sustaining our mission of providing quality, compassionate care for the elderly. On behalf of the Trustees, Administration and Poydras Home Community, we thank you!
It has personally been a pleasure having the opportunity to work with such a talented, capable, and dedicated Board for seven years, the last two as Board President. I appreciate the support the Board has shown and the effort and dedication of our Executive Director, Jay Rivé, and his staff. I look forward to serving another two years on the Board as Jill Winston assumes the helm as President of the Poydras Home Board of Trustees.
Sincerely,
Dena L. OlivierPast President, Board of Trustees

Glam and GlitzAt Hunter House
Peacock Shoe
Hunter House residents and staff led by art therapist Carrie Breeken poured on the glitter, glam, and glitz during several Monday and Thursday art therapy sessions. Residents were thrilled to create sensational sequined high heel shoes that rival Muses! Using fluffy maribou, feathers, rhinestones, and ribbons residents decorated plain high heel pumps found at Goodwill. Their designs ranged from turquoise blue feather peacock shoes to a red
ladybug and green moss and brown twig design, to a gold and black ruffled leopard look, to butterflies taking flight. Hunter House residents produced over eight unique creations. Poydras is so fortunate to have Carrie working with our community. Carrie joined Poydras Home in 1999 as an art therapist with a Master of Arts in Art Therapy and she became board certified in 2001. Her art creations with residents always offer sensory stimulation, choices, control over the materials and a sense of individual accomplishment! We can’t say it enough-- Thank You!

This year marks an exciting turning point in Poydras Home history. As many of you already know, after extensive research and study, the Board of Trustees
unanimously supported a strategic and selective renovation and expansion of Poydras Home to meet the rapidly increasing needs of the elderly. Poydras is addressing the critical areas of Assisted Living Memory Support, Assisted Living (Classic), and Rehabilitative Therapies. Last April, Poydras broke ground for Capital Project 2012 and we are happy to announce that we are nearly halfway there. Our campus already looks remarkably transformed! Last October, we celebrated an important construction milestone, inviting all Trustees, Board Emeritus, Residents and Staff to sign the last steel beam before it was hoisted to the top of the building. The impressive façade now easily seen from Magazine St. is the construction of a new three story building, Oak House, which will provide 33 new residential units for Classic Assisted Living and Assisted Living Memory Support, including an Art Studio. Also, well underway are a Wellness & Therapy Center, a Cultural, Educational & Spiritual Center, and enhancements and historic renovations to the Main Home. We welcome you to visit Poydras Home to see firsthand the steady progress we are making each week. Final completion of the project is expected by July of this year. For insights on these extensive plans and programs, allow me to share some highlights of each of our focus areas of the project:
Oak HousePoydras is adding 27,000 square feet of extra space with the new 33 apartments in Oak House, increasing our current residential capacity by 40%. Eleven of the
apartments will provide expanded Assisted Living Memory Support through “Seasons,” a special program specifically designed to help people challenged by Alzheimer’s or other memory disorders. Twenty-two of the units will be for Classic Assisted Living, offering one and two bedroom units in addition to a reception and entertainment area. Oak House will also feature an Art Studio on the third floor
to provide programs that are not only therapeutic but actively engage residents’ participation creatively and artistically. The Art Studio will provide courses for residents focused on developing an artistic skill or technique, such as working with clay, plaster, collage, drawing, or printmaking. The studio will also be available for high-functioning
residents’ individual use, creating tangible physical and mental health benefits through opportunities for participation in a larger informal community, and for maintaining hand strength and coordination. Oak House will be adjacent to the
Main Home so residents will have easy access to all the amenities of the entire campus.
Wellness & Therapy Center Our new state-of-the-art Wellness and Therapy Center also being built adjacent to the main building will offer more than 1,000 square feet of space graced by picturesque gardens, stylish lighting and mirrored walls. High-tech balance equipment, weight bars for rehabilitation exercises, spaces for yoga and other stretching exercises, as well as sophisticated computerized cycling machines, and a wide
Dear Poydras Home Families and Friends,
The Poydras Home Expansion
array of physical, occupational, speech and other therapy programs will provide residents the ultimate in strength-building and health-enhancing experiences.
Cultural, Educational & Spiritual CenterAttending to the spiritual, emotional, intellectual and mental health needs of our residents remains central to the Poydras Home mission. The new Cultural, Educational & Spiritual Center will provide a place where residents can convene with others to transform their past and present life experiences into a continuing discovery of meaning, culturally and educationally. The Center will foster a high level of social and emotional wellness through cultural, educational and spiritual activities for each resident, maximizing one’s overall happiness and independence. The Center will enrich mind, body and spirit by offering powerful opportunities for human connection, self-expression and joy.
Historic Renovations Poydras Home moved to its present location in 1857 and remains dedicated to preserving its distinguished ambiance, an authentic and unique part of New Orleans history. To further enhance Poydras’ classic setting with modern amenities, we will infuse extensive interior and exterior design enhancements into a beautifully appointed new living room, 1857 Hall, where residents can enjoy special interactions with each other and where staff can easily assist where needed. In addition, we’re adding Bistro Julien for our nursing care residents, which will feature a patio at the entrance, a granite countertop bar and a seating area near the fireplace and a flat screen TV. Facing Magazine St. a spacious and elegant new dining room overlooking lush gardens will add a luxuriant new dimension to dining for Classic Assisted Living residents. This handsome addition will be known as Lalande in memory of our historical benefactor, Julien de Lalande Poydras. To add an extra sense of beauty on campus as well as create greater ease of movement, we will also plant lavish new landscaping and provide a circular driveway for the convenience of our residents and visitors. Our success in making these tremendous advances comes from the extraordinary dedication of the Poydras Board as well as the boundless enthusiasm of Poydras residents, day participants, friends, families, volunteers and staff. Together, we are ensuring a bright future for Poydras for many generations to come.
Sincerely,
Jay RiveChief Executive Officer

Trustees, Board Emeritus, Residents and Staff Send Wishes Skyward
At a “topping off ” ceremony this past spring, Trustees, Board Emeritus, Residents and Staff signed the final steel beam for the addition of the new three-story building Oak House just before construction workers hoisted the top beam high into the air. How fitting that the support of all those well-wishers, unseen though it will be, will overlook all the activity as the years go by. Since 1817, Poydras Home has built a legacy of service. Today, that legacy includes steadfast compassion and peace of mind. As Poydras Home grows to face the challenges of the future, the tradition of care endures.

Lifetime Learning Classes at Poydras HomeCo-sponsored by Lyceum & Chautauqua
The DNA of Freedom from the Greeks to the American Constitution
Beginning January 25th ~ 12 consecutive Friday mornings ~ 10:00 - noon.
Refreshments will be provided.
Beginning January 25, Poydras Home will be hosting the course, “The DNA of Freedom from the Greeks to the American Constitution” taught by Dudley “Bud” Flanders, historian and frequent lecturer of Democracy and
the American Constitution. Mr. Flanders attended Washington & Lee University and earned his J.D. at Tulane Law School. The historical periods of the course include: The Greeks, Alexander the Great, The Romans, Christianity, Islam, The Middle Ages, The Renaissance, The Reformation, The Enlightenment, Discovery, Colonization, Revolution and the U.S. Constitution. The class covers the historical progression of Freedom and Equality that led to American Democracy and provides a deeper understanding of the great personalities and ideas which created the changing beliefs and opinions that led to the Declaration of Independence. The final
two of the 12 classes, April 5 and April 12, are sponsored by Chautauqua and will cover the drafting, ratification, and legacy of the U.S.Constitution and the daunting decisions confronting its writers. If time permits, there will be a Mock Constitutional Convention. If you are open to celebrating democracy, then, and, now, please join us.The informal class and discussion group is held in the Poydras Home Board Room in the Main Historic Building. Parking is available near the 825 Jefferson Ave entrance to Poydras Home. There is no fee to participate.
“The subject matter is history, not partisan politics. Our focus will be to observe changes in public consensus about four main questions: What is Mankind? What is Man’s Relation to Man? What is Man’s Relation to God? What is Man’s Relation to Nature?”
Bud Flanders

Annual AppealAnnual Appeal is the cornerstone of giving to Poydras Home. It includes unrestricted giving from all sources and supports Poydras Home’s operations, programs and activities. Poydras Home’s excellent staff ratios, quality caregivers, improvements to the home, and support for Alzheimer’s and memory support programs are all funded in part by the Annual Appeal.
EndowmentThe Poydras Home Endowment Fund ensures Poydras’ future as a continuing care retirement community and assures the perpetuation of its mission of quality, compassionate care for future generations. Income generated from the Endowment Fund supports general operations, property and capital improvements, and resident subsidies.
Annual Art Show & Patron PartySupport for Poydras Home’s annual fundraiser as a sponsor, donor, contributor, patron, artist, or volunteer assists Poydras in raising funds for a specific need. Participating artists donate a percentage of sale proceeds to Poydras. In 2007 the fundraiser purchased a new 18 passenger bus for residents. In 2008 funds were dedicated to new therapeutic hydra-spas. In 2009 proceeds purchased a resident car for transportation to doctor’s appointments and offsite therapy sessions. In 2010 proceeds funded a storm emergency generator. 2011 and 2012 proceeds were dedicated to the construction of a Wellness and Therapy Center that will offer a state of the art facility to support an array of physical and cognitive therapies for our residents and adult day participants.
Memorials & GiftsThe generous support of gifts made to Poydras Home in memory of or in honor of someone special directly supports the operations of Poydras. These very thoughtful gifts offer a special way to remember those you love, or to recognize a kindness received or service rendered.
Pastoral CarePoydras Home nurtures the spiritual, as well as the physical requirements of our community. Poydras retains a full-time chaplain who ministers daily to the emotional and spiritual needs of residents, families, and staff. Donations to Pastoral Care support the Chaplaincy Program providing two non-denominational religious services weekly and year-round support for 10 visiting ministers from five religious denominations.
