The Junior League

develops the potential

of women through a

comprehensive training and

education course, along with

opportunities to serve in

leadership positions, where

members gain on-the-job

experience running a large

and very complex nonprofit

organization. Even more

importantly, the League trains

volunteers to be effective in the community well beyond their

membership requirements. With nearly 1,500 active members

and over 3,000 sustaining members, the League encourages

mentorship and development, cultivating a lifetime of civic

service for tens of thousands of women.

Through the achievements of its members and generous

donors, the Junior League of Houston contributed more than

$2 million in volunteer time and direct financial support to

38 community projects and other volunteer initiatives in

2017 – 2018. League members provided over 100,000 volunteer

hours that touched countless lives across the Greater Houston

Area and the League contributed almost $900,000 in grants and

project support to a number of both emerging and established

organizations carrying out important work across Houston.

In addition, the Junior League of Houston Hurricane Harvey

Relief Fund, established to provide disaster relief monies to

organizations currently in the Junior League’s Community

Program, raised over $111,000 with contributions from 37

states, including individual donors, corporations, foundations,

sister Junior Leagues, and proceeds from a League special event.

The League is grateful to its many friends and supporters,

and to the almost 5,000 members of the Junior League

of Houston who enable it to continue “Building A Better

Community” and create a legacy of enduring impact on the

Greater Houston Area.

The Junior League of Houston, Inc. is a network of empowered female civic leaders working with community partners to address and help solve pressing issues like basic needs, abuse of women and children, health care, education and cultural enrichment. JLH is part of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI), a network of 291 leagues comprised of over 150,000 women in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain, engaged in similar work in their own communities. AJLI is a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive consultation, training and other support services that assist the leadership of the 291 Junior Leagues across four continents. The association provides a unique and powerful depth of knowledge and resourcefulness to bring about the changes its member leagues strive to accomplish. Besides volunteer members being able to transfer their membership to other leagues in the AJLI family, being a member of AJLI also affords Junior League members valuable learning opportunities and available resources such as conferences, online training sessions and a website rich with reference materials.

In 1999, the Junior League of Houston created the Community Endowment. In 2005, a separate organization, the Junior League of Houston Foundation, was created and Community Endowment assets were transferred to the new Foundation. The Foundation’s board is charged with overseeing the management, investment and disbursement of funds. The purpose of the Community Endowment Fund is to sustain, expand and initiate the League-designated Community Program in perpetuity.

In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in the Greater Houston Area, causing catastrophic damage in its path. Houston residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations faced countless challenges and hardships in the wake of the storm. The event celebrated the beauty the Junior League creates in the lives it touches and the beautiful partnerships it has throughout Houston. The 70th Annual Charity Ball honored the past by remembering the beautiful women who worked diligently to shape and grow this dynamic organization. It also embraced the dedicated service of its current members who continue to “Make Today Beautiful” by volunteering in community projects that impact Houston’s diverse needs. Charity Ball is a significant source of funding for the Junior League’s community outreach and volunteer initiatives. The fun of Une Belle Nuit extended well beyond Charity Ball weekend. Several additional events were held for League members and guests to support Une Belle Nuit and the Junior League of Houston such as the ball’s kickoff event Summer Soirée, the family-friendly event Une Belle Nuit Petite, and the late-night event held the Saturday evening of Charity Ball, NOCTURNE! In total, these events raised $800,000 thanks not only to the generosity of Community Partners, underwriters and auction donors but also to the enthusiastic efforts of Jayne Sheehy Johnston, Charity Ball Chairman, and the Charity Ball Committee, along with Sarah Heck Snyder, President, and Mary Lee Hackedorn Wilkens, Development Vice President, who supported the Charity Ball Committee throughout the process. Each night, guests enjoyed a delectable three-course meal, silent and live auctions, as well as a memorable show performed by talented Junior League members, all before dancing the night away in la boîte de nuit!
