Literature at Lunchtime with Dr Jane MackayJean Rhys’ ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’Thursday 2 September12 noonJean Rhys’ ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ is a postcolonial novel which tells the story of the first Mrs Rochester – or the ‘mad woman in the attic’ - in Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’ but it’s also so much more than merely an extension of Bronte’s classic. Using her own Creole background, Rhys explores the full range of the psychology of a woman misunderstood by her aristocratic English husband and in doing so, opens us to a world of sexual and cultural misunderstandings. This is one of the 20th Century’s truly great novels.

Dr Jane Mackay attempts to reach a clearer understanding of James’s intentions.

Lysistrata leads the women of Greece in a revolt against the male establishment, calling on them to ban sex in order to stop a bloody conflict in this bold, visual, no-nonsense approach to the contemporary staging of a classical text. Chaos ensues as the conventions of Ancient Greek society are turned on their head and sexual tension builds to bursting point in this bawdy, provocative & delightfully absurd comedy. With a reputation for making Greek drama seriously sexy, AOD use a highly physical style and a team of skilled collaborators known for their circus & comedy experience to catapult this play into the 21st Century.

Literature at Lunchtime with Dr Jane MackayHarriet Beecher Stowe’s ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’Thursday 2 December12 noon Abraham Lincoln thought that this book, essentially an anti-slavery novel, started the American Civil War. Focusing on the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave, it was the fi rst American novel to become a best seller. However, from being celebrated for its defence of human rights, it has since become hugely controversial with the name ‘Uncle Tom’ becoming a derogatory term for those championing African American writing. Let’s see what we think!
