The Lauriston Gallery Altered States: where science meets artSat 23 Oct – Sat 8 Jan 2011, FREEAltered States seeks to uncover the ways in which contemporaryartists have been inspired by historical, current and futuredevelopments in bio-medical research and the impact science has had and is having on cultural and human endeavour.

Featuring a range of artistic practice including installation and wallbased work; artists will explore the importance of cultural referencessuch as Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ to current concerns regardinggenetics, medicine, reproduction, anatomy, mortality and longevity.

There will be a series of related events and talks taking place duringNovember and December.

This exhibition has been organised to coincidewith Manchester Science Festival.

Working with awealth of local and regional video artists,script writers, drama artists, animatorsand photographers the local communitiesof Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham,Salford, Stockport, Rochdale, Tamesideand Wigan have developed their own digitalcontent, telling their own stories andbroadcasting these globally through theuse of new technology.

The exhibition features documentaryvideo, portrait photography, visualprojections, short films and animation allmade by the varied communities of

Greater Manchester. The exhibition also showcases work by a range ofdigital artists, photographers, script writers and animators who wereinvolved in delivering the projects including Richard Ramchurn, JohanOldekop, Mat Johns, Kim Wiltshire, Andy Sykes, Luke Marsh, The Box TV & Peopleprint.
