Once the applicant has received this basic training, the hiring company’s appointed Signing Authority has one year to complete, sign and submit the original training applications and training reports to the local MAESD apprenticeship branch.
CERTIFICATION
Successful graduates of this program will receive a Northern College Certificate. This program will help prepare students for certification through the Apprenticeship Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD), and help them be more competent and marketable to employers.
COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS AND ATTENDANCE
Generally, students must successfully complete every module through practical skills demonstration. A skills audit is performed near the end of the course to ensure students have the knowledge and skills required for Common Core. A 60% must be obtained for all in-class tests and assignments. An 80% must be obtained for all Norcat Training provided.
Students will partake in three weeks of in class theory, 6 weeks of practical on-site and certification training at the Northern College drill site, along with the Alamos Gold Young-Davidson Mine site in Matachewan, and complete a one week (minimum of 35 hours) of a non-paid placement with a drilling company. All components of the program must be successfully completed to graduate. Some weekend days may be used for certification training, therefore students are advised to make necessary arrangements for travel. Students must maintain at a minimum 90% of attendance throughout the program.
FITNESS LEVEL REQUIREMENTS
Jobs in the mining sector are physically demanding. Therefore, it is recommended (but not required) that anyone pursuing a career in this field have a complete physical prior to registering for this program. Below average hearing, vision and back health may restrict the opportunities which exist in this field. Participants should also be aware that most contractors and mining companies require company medical exams as part of their hiring process including audio metric testing. Northern College will provide students with a personal trainer who will instruct them basic fitness routines in order to improve their strength and endurance along with nutritional counselling to better prepare the students for the physical aspects of working in mining.
ALCOHOL AND DRUGS
The diamond drilling environment can be very hazardous. All workers’ senses are required in order to be keenly aware of his/her environment at all times. The Instructors and Program Coordinator will have full authority to restrict anyone suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs from participating in training on any given day, this includes prescriptions. Anyone undergoing medical treatment should include a letter from their treating physician that they are capable of participating in the training and operating equipment while receiving treatment. Drug testing may be required by drilling companies when students are hired at the end of the program. NOTE: A breach in the Code of Conduct can result in immediate dismissal from the program.
