Turismo e qualità dell’accoglienza, un binomio indissolubile. È con questa convinzione che la Cameradi Commercio di Chieti dal 2006 promuove il marchio di qualità Ospitalità Italiana tra le strutture turi-stiche della provincia di Chieti.

Per l’edizione 2010, con questo catalogo, abbiamo voluto offrire ai turisti attuali e potenziali e aglistessi operatori del territorio una facile guida che presenta 4 possibili itinerari tematici lungo i 31 co-muni che ospitano le 73 strutture turistiche che hanno ricevuto il marchio di qualità.

La guida rende omaggio a quanti hanno investito, non senza sforzi, nel ricercare la qualità nella pro-pria offerta turistica ponendo in essere scelte che rappresentano un’opportunità ed una sfida per l’in-tero sistema economico italiano.

Tourism and hospitality quality go hand in hand. This conviction has led to the promotion of quality intourism accommodation facilities by the Chieti Chamber of Commerce in the Province of Chieti andthe endorsement of the Seal of Italian Hospitality Quality since 2006.

For this 2010 edition, the catalogue offers current and potential visitors as well as tourism operatorsin the Province, an easy guide proposing 4 possible themed itineraries covering 31 municipalities witha total of 73 tourism establishments, all of which have received the Seal of Quality.

The guide is a tribute to all those individuals who have worked tirelessly in pursuing and investing inquality in order to enhance their tourism offer. Every one of these represents an opportunity and chal-lenge for the entire Italian economic system.

Nonostante molte imprese visitate ed analizzate avessero votazioni buone o sufficienti, solo co-loro che hanno ottenuto un punteggio da 150 a 200 hanno ricevuto il marchio Ospitalità Italiana,perché il marchio viene assegnato solo a quegli esercizi che hanno un’offerta di eccellenza.

The Ospitalità Italiana seal is a certification promoted by the Italian Chambers of Commerceto develop the offer of quality in Italy.

It consists of a group of enterprises whose main goals are to search for quality and makeyearly evaluations.

This can take place by means of recognizing a certification of quality, that adheres to thesystem of values between who offers and who purchases. Joining a common logo respondsto the need to communicate the business efforts taken towards quality control to potentialclients.

Dall’ampia fascia collinare, dalla linea dicosta e persino dal mare, il punto di rife-rimento per l’osservatore che ammiri ilpaesaggio di questa zona d’Abruzzo èsempre la Maiella. Il maestoso, artico-lato ed imponente massiccio si sviluppaper circa 30 km di lunghezza, con catenedisposte da Nord-Ovest a Sud-Est, alter-nando versanti più morbidi e aspre partirocciose, in un susseguirsi di almenotrenta cime che superano i 2000 metri eche culminano con i 2793 m della vettadel Monte Amaro.È tutelato da un Parco Nazionale questoambiente prezioso e ricco di biodiversità,che un’antica leggenda vuole legare allapresenza di una guerriera gigantesca diorigine frigia, qui recatasi con le compa-gne maiellane per curare l’amato figlioferito in battaglia con erbe medicinali,che però risultarono ancora ricopertedalla coltre di neve. Per ricordare lascomparsa del giovane, Giove piantò unmaggiociondolo. E per questo sentimento di sacralità eaustero terrore che incute a tratti nelleplaghe più silenziose e selvagge, dasempre le popolazioni locali hanno chia-mato il loro massiccio “MontagnaMadre”, mentre Plinio il Vecchio la definì“Padre dei monti”. Ampi spazi erbosi, falde detritiche, forre,campi pietrosi, ghiaioni, affioramenticarbonatici e doline, circhi glaciali, am-bienti umidi movimentano il paesaggio.Qui, grazie ad una felice congiuntura cli-matica e alla forte escursione altimetricain poco spazio, convivono esemplari flo-ristici tipicamente mediterranei conesemplari alpini, balcanici ed artici comein pochi altri luoghi d’Europa: cerri, fag-

Visitors to this part of Abruzzo are never far from theimposing presence of the Maiella mountain range,dominating the entire area from the hills down tosea. Thir ty kilometres in length, with rocky ridgesrunning from north west to south east, the highestpeak of the Maiella Massif is Monte Amaro, risingsplendidly to 2793 m, with a fur ther thir ty peakssoaring to over 2000 m.

Legend has it that a Phrygian warrior goddess cameto the Maiella in the hope of finding medicinal herbsand plants to cure her beloved son who had beenwounded in battle. Her search was in vain however,as the mountain slopes were still covered in a thickmantle of snow. She was unable to save her son,but Zeus planted a laburnum tree in remembrance ofthe young warrior. A sacred atmosphere still per-vades this vast, austere territory today and a som-bre silence emanates from its deep, wild gorges. Asa result, the local population has, since ancienttimes, always feared and respected the Maiella, call-ing it “Mother Mountain”, while Pliny the Elder, de-scribed it as “The father of all mountains”.

A National Park was set up in 1991 to protect theMaiella’s rich biodiversity and safeguard its pre-cious, unspoilt environment. This is a landscape ofcontrasts with grassy slopes and lush vegetation,valleys and deeply-carved canyons, bare rocky out-crops, dolines, scree and glacial circles. Favourableclimatic conditions together with marked differencesin altitude in such a confined space mean that typi-cally Mediterranean vegetation grows alongsideplant species normally found in the Alps, the Balkansand the Arctic. There are few places in Europe whereit is possible to find such an array of flora: turkeyoak, beech, black pine, mugo pine, oak, yew andholly trees have managed to resist human interven-tion and deforestation over the centuries. There aremore than 2100 different types of plants, 142 ofwhich are endemic to the area.

gete, pini neri e pini mughi, querce, tassie agrifogli continuano a resistere sui ver-santi di un massiccio che nel corso deisecoli è stato in gran parte disboscatodall’uomo per scopi agricoli e pastorali.Sono più di 2100 le entità vegetali, di cui142 endemiche. La fauna locale registra oltre il 45% dellespecie di mammiferi presenti in Italia: siannoverano tra l’altro orsi marsicani, ca-mosci, aquile reali, cervi, caprioli, falchipellegrini, rari picchi rossi mezzani e pic-chi dorso bianco, e lupi. L’area faunisticadel lupo appenninico, nel territorio di Pre-toro, preserva questa specie dall’incro-cio con cani ed impedisce, dunque,l’estinzione del carnivoro all’interno di unhabitat ideale. Ma ciò che rende particolare l’ambientenaturale del Parco è la disseminazione ditestimonianze legate alla presenzaumana sulla Maiella. E se i rinvenimentiarcheologici datano la comparsa di abi-tanti sin dal Paleolitico, sono le capannein pietra a secco (i tholoi) dei pastori, iloro stazzi, le grotte usate come ricoveroper se stessi e le bestie, le tracce dellospietramento a ricordarci che questa erameta, anno dopo anno, di greggi di mi-gliaia di pecore e di uomini che transu-mavano da e per le Puglie. E sono gli eremi scavati nella roccia, ri-cavati da una cengia, ornati da un sem-plice altare in pietra, alimentati dasorgenti d’acqua e ingegnosi sistemi dipiccoli canali, oggi a volte protetti dallemura di santuari, a ricordarci che questifurono i luoghi privilegiati di eremiti allaricerca di solitudine, pace, rinuncia econtatto col divino. The Maiella also has an incredibly rich wildlife popu-lation. 45% of all mammal species to be found in Italyare here: marsican brown bears, golden eagles, cham-ois, roebuck, red deer, peregrine falcons, the rare mid-dle-spotted woodpecker and the white-backedwoodpecker. Near Pretoro there is an area wherewolves have been re-introduced and are protected.

Historically, the area is fascinating as evidence ofhuman presence here goes back to Paleolithic times.Dry-stone round shelters, known as tholoi, are scat-tered all over the Maiella. For centuries, they pro-vided a place of refuge for shepherds during theseasonal migration of sheep, that were driven overthe mountains to and from Puglia.

Hermits also found their way here in search of soli-tude and peace and a life dedicated to prayer.“Mother Mountain” is dotted with retreats carved outof the rock, adorned with simple stone altars andsupplied with water carried through an ingenioussystem of channels directly from the mountainsprings. Some of these remote retreats were erectedby Pietro Angelerio, later Pope Celestine V, and walk-ers and hikers can still stumble across them today,as they explore the Maiella’s mountain paths.The area was also a favourite hideout brigands, whofrom the 1860s onwards, took on an increasinglypolitical and social role as defenders of the poor andthe Bourbon monarchy against the unification ofItaly. Their names are inscribed on the ‘Brigands’Tablet’, a rock wall between Monte Cavallo andMonte Acquaviva.

The Maiella is a paradise for walkers and climbers asthere is something here for everyone. Less experi-enced walkers can, for example, take a fairly easyhike up from Bocca di Valle to the San Giovanni wa-terfalls, while even exper t climbers will feel chal-lenged by the ascent of Monte Amaro. tagna Madre di tali eremi mimetizzatinella natura, alcuni dei quali tuttora ac-cessibili tramite sentieri. Poi ci sono lepiù recenti tracce dei briganti, che a par-tire dal 1860 assunsero con maggiorevirulenza il ruolo politico di difensori deipoveri e del re borbonico contro l’Italiaunificata: la “Tavola dei Briganti”, un la-strone di roccia affiorante sul crinale trail Monte Cavallo e il Monte Acquaviva, ri-porta le incisioni con i nomi di alcuni diloro. Per chi ama le escursioni in montagna,la Maiella offre un ampio ventaglio dipossibilità che variano dalla difficoltànon alta di percorsi come quello che daBocca di Valle (Guardiagrele) conducealla cascate di San Giovanni o quello chedal territorio di Palombaro porta alla Ri-serva di Feudo Ugni, fino ad arrivare adesempio alle impegnative ascese alMonte Amaro, consigliate solo agliesperti, da Fara San Martino o dal BlockHaus (dove sono ancora visibili i ruderidi un fortino costruito per combattere ilbrigantaggio). Percorrere a piedi un sen-tiero su questa montagna, comunque,assume sempre un significato com-plesso: gli aspetti naturalistici non sonomai disgiunti da quelli antropici.Delle tante grotte carsiche, la più nota aituristi per le sue concrezioni e l’interessespeleologico è sicuramente la Grotta delCavallone, che si sviluppa in lunghezzaper 1300 metri ed è visitabile d’estate eraggiungibile tramite funivia dal vallonedi Taranta Peligna.

Varie sono le aree pro-tette, come la Riserva Naturale “Valle delForo”, nel comune di Pretoro, dove lafaggeta assume le preziose caratteristi-che di una fustaia matura; la Riserva Na-turale Orientata “Fara SanMartino-Palombaro”, che tutela 4000 et-tari di wilderness e un’incredibile biodi-versità dovuta ad un’escursionealtimetrica di circa 2400 metri; la Ri-serva Naturale Orientata “Quarto SantaChiara”, un esteso piano carsico nel ter-ritorio di Palena. L’effetto del sole e delle acque meteori-che sui versanti più scoscesi ed espostidelle numerose colline argillose che rac-cordano le zone pedemontane con lastretta fascia costiera, invece, provocala formazione di calanchi, le cui cresteaffilate, specie all’ora del tramonto, si in-fuocano regalando suggestivi effetti cro-matici. E procedendo dai colli verso lacosta, nel territorio provinciale ci sonotra l’altro la Riserva Regionale Lago diSerranella a Sant’Eusanio del Sangro,ovvero 500 ettari di zona umida collegatial bacino artificiale e preziosi per l’avi-fauna stanziale e di passo; il Parco terri-toriale attrezzato dell’Annunziata, pocodistante da Orsogna, che tutela un pic-colo corso d’acqua affluente del torrenteVenna in cui vive il raro granchio difiume; la Riserva Naturale guidata Boscodi Don Venanzio (a Pollutri), che pre-serva un lembo di foresta planiziaria afarnia e frassino, lungo il basso corsodel Sinello.

be able to see the ruins of an old for t that was builtin an attempt to keep the brigands out of the area. Asvisitors hike along the mountain paths they will dis-cover that in the Maiella, nature and human pres-ence are always inextricably linked.The presence of deep karst stone caves also drawstourists and speleologists to the area. One of themost famous is the Grotta del Cavallone that is 1300metres long and is open to visitors in the summer. Itcan be accessed by cable car from Taranta Peligna.Winter sports enthusiasts are also catered for. In thearea near Pretoro, Passo Lanciano and Majelletta aretwo ski resor ts offering both cross-country anddownhill skiing. Another major ski resor t can befound at Pizzoferrato-Gamberale.

Within the National Park, there are various nature re-serves. The “Valle del Foro” near Pretoro has an in-credible mature beech forest, while thebiodiversity-rich “Fara San Martino-Palombaro” Re-serve situated at an altitude of 2400 m, extends over4000 hectares of wilderness. Another reserve, the“Quar to Santa Chiara”, can be found in the areaaround Palena and is an extensive karst plain.

The combined effect of sun and water on the moreexposed and steeper slopes of the clay hills that linkthe foot of the mountains to the thin strip of coastline,has over time formed badlands, the sharp crests ofwhich shimmer red in the sunset. Going towards thecoast, there are numerous other protected areas andnature reserves, including the Lake Serranella Re-gional Reserve at Sant’Eusanio, a natural wetlandhabitat for more than 200 species of birds. Not farfrom Orsogna, the Annuziata Territorial Park protectsa tributary of the Venna River which is home to a veryrare species of river crab. And finally, the Nature Re-serve of Bosco di Don Venanzio, near Pollutri, pro-tects a narrow stretch of coastal plains forest, thicklypopulated with oak and ash.

Da Francavilla al Mare a San Salvo Marina,la costa teatina si dipana per decine di chi-lometri con ampi arenili dorati, tratti ciottolosie ghiaiosi (per lo più in prossimità delle variefoci dei fiumi), e scoglio, soprattutto a par-tire dalla zona di Ortona. A qualche decina dimetri dalla linea di costa, spesso l’orizzonteverso il largo è interrotto da barriere frangi-flutti e, soprattutto in corrispondenza dellespiagge sabbiose, questo tratto di Adriaticodegrada molto dolcemente, rendendo taliacque indicate per le famiglie con bimbi.Numerosi stabilimenti attrezzati, strutturericettive e servizi turistici facilitano unsoggiorno balneare in zona; per chi pre-ferisce, ci sono comunque spiagge liberee punti più isolati e di più difficile accesso. La quasi totale assenza di baie naturali e diampi golfi ha reso pressoché impossibile lacostruzione di porti, e ha contribuito in partea quella sorta di isolamento culturale chestoricamente ha conferito alla regione deicaratteri di “insularità”. Ma oggi la situazioneè cambiata, i turisti d’estate affollano le rive,il traffico litoraneo si fa piuttosto intenso e idiportisti nautici trovano un approdo sicuronel porto turistico Marina di Ortona, nel por-ticciolo a vocazione turistica Marina del Soledi Fossacesia, nel porto turistico di SanSalvo Le Marinelle, e in futuro in quello diFrancavilla (in fase di realizzazione). Dismessa la linea ferroviaria a ridossodella linea di costa, un progetto prevedeil recupero della massicciata a fini ciclo-turistici con la creazione di una via verdedi mobilità alternativa al traffico motoriz-zato, che potenzialmente entrerebbe a farparte del lungo corridoio verde adriatico. Francavilla al Mare è una delle stazionistoriche del turismo balneare abruzzese:il primo stabilimento risale al 1873. Molte

The long stretch of Teatina coastline that runs be-tween Francavilla al Mare and San Salvo Marina of-fers a stunning landscape of wide sandy beaches,sheltered hidden coves and, from Ortona onwards,jagged rocky cliffs that plunge into the sea.

The low-lying beaches that shelve gently into the seaand the natural breakwaters lying just off the shoremake this par t of the Adriatic perfect for familieswith small children. With a wide choice of accom-modation, an excellent range of facilities and well-equipped beaches, there is everything here to suitall tastes and budgets. For the more adventurousand independent traveller who is prepared to seekout the coastline’s hidden gems, it is still possibleto find remote and solitary beaches.

The almost total absence of natural harbours and thelack of any significant fishing por t, has given thearea its rather insular character. However, withtoday’s tourists flocking to its summer beaches, andthe tourist ports of Marina di Ortona, Marina del Soledi Fossacesia and San Salvo Le Marinelle offeringsafe mooring facilities to sailing enthusiasts, thearea has lost that sense of cultural isolation it oncehad. A new marina is planned to open in the near fu-ture at Francavilla.There are also plans to turn the disused coastal rail-way line into a ‘greenway’, creating a cycling andwalking route, that will eventually become part of thelong Adriatic green corridor supporting eco-friendly,non-motorized forms of travel.

Francavilla al Mare is one of the area’s most his-toric seaside towns. Tourists have been coming hereto enjoy its beaches since 1873. To the north, rowsof coloured umbrellas line the long, broad sandybeach, while there is a narrower stretch of sand inthe vicinity of the old town. A pier near the culturalcentre of Palazzo Sirena is a favourite place for peo-ple to hang out on warm summer evenings.

Questa è una dellespiagge più note di Ortona, ricavata inuna piccola baia protetta a Sud dallo spe-rone che preannuncia i suggestivi Riparidi Giobbe, una caletta raggiungibile soloa piedi o via mare, in cui ghiaia e scoglisi mescolano.Oltrepassata Ortona, alta sul suo promon-torio che domina il porto, inizia lo spettaco-lare succedersi dei trabocchi. Di fatto laCosta dei Trabocchi abbraccia tutti i comunicostieri del litorale teatino, ma è proprio aSud di Ortona che alcuni esempi di questemacchine da pesca, cantate anche da D’An-nunzio, si lasciano ancora ammirare nel loronudo equilibrismo fatto di pali ed assi dilegno, cavi e fili di ferro. Equilibrismo che simaterializza in un’esile passerella alta suiflutti che collega una piattaforma alla costa,in un sistema con alcune corde e un arganoche permettono di immergere in mare lagrande rete, in una casetta per gli attrezzi eil ricovero delle famiglie di pescatori, detti“traboccanti”. Non più attivi come un tempo,i trabocchi oggi sono soprattutto oggetto divalorizzazione culturale e turistica. Proprio ad uno dei trabocchi della costa diSan Vito Chietino, quello ottocentesco diCapo Turchino, si legano alcuni degli episodisalienti del dannunziano Trionfo della morte. Across the River Foro is the Lido Riccio, one of themost renowned beaches in the whole area. Nestledin a tiny bay, protected by a spur of rock jutting outinto the sea, it is a foretaste of the remarkable Riparidi Giobbe, a rock and pebble cove that can only bereached by foot or accessed from the sea.

Towards the south, beyond Ortona, set high on aheadland overlooking the port, the coastline is trulyspectacular. It is from this point that the famous tra-bocchi can be seen. These are traditional fishingcontraptions, constructed out of flat wooden boards,with an intricate mix of iron cables and wires, in-geniously balanced on poles. Stretching out to sea,they are connected to the shore by narrow planks. Asystem of ropes and winches allowed the fishermento let down their nets. The trabocchi also providedshelter for the fishermen and their families, whowere known as “traboccanti”. One of these traboc-chi is immortalized in Gabriele D’Annunzio’s The Tri-umph of the Death. Most trabocchi are no longer inuse, but they are a suggestive and evocative re-minder of the life and customs of the people whoonce lived here, and of how the Costa dei Traboc-chi, which in reality stretches for over 70 kilometresand includes all the towns along the coast, first gotits name.

The journey down the coast continues, passingsmall seaside resor ts, dense Mediterrean maquis,olive groves and citrus trees to Rocca San Giovanniwhere the Costa dei Trabocchi Visitor Centre is lo-cated. Between the village of Vallevò and La Torre,there is a still-active trabocco at work, fishing forwhitebait and grouper. Near here is the pebbly beachof La Foce, and the mainly sandy beach of Caval-luccio looking out onto another old fishing platformand a tall rock.

Fra il piccolo borgonella frazione Vallevò e la località La Torre,dove l’omonimo trabocco è ancora attivoper la pesca di novellame e di cefali, si aprela spiaggia ciottolosa de La Foce, mentrequella del Cavalluccio, circa 30 metri pre-valentemente sabbiosi, guarda un’altramacchina da pesca e un faraglione. L’abbazia di San Giovanni in Venere pre-siede dall’alto le mezze lune delle baiesottostanti di Fossacesia Marina. A To-rino di Sangro, la Riserva Regionale Lec-ceta litoranea è l’unico biotopo costiero diquesto tipo e di una certa estensione pre-sente lungo la fascia del medio Adriatico(insieme a quello del Conero): questo pre-zioso stralcio naturale non impiantato dal-l’uomo ospita anche roverelle, carpiniorientali, cerri e olmi. La spiaggia LeMorge è caratterizzata da grandi ciottoli escogli affioranti dalle acque. Il Lido di Casalbordino presenta ancoradei depositi dunali residuali, un ampio are-nile e una piccola pineta. Oltrepassata lafoce del Sinello, la Riserva RegionalePunta Aderci, un tratto di litorale rocciosocon tratti pianeggianti tagliati da falesie,rari sistemi dunali e zone umide, proteggela costa sino al porto di Vasto, in un am-biente a tratti ideale per il birdwatching. Trail promontorio di Punta Aderci e di PuntaPenna (con l’omonimo faro a guardia delporto e il Santuario ottocentesco di SantaMaria della Penna) ci sono belle spiaggesabbiose e cordoni di dune. Il litorale pro-segue con gli stabilimenti della marina diVasto e quelli di San Salvo, prima di ce-dere il passo alla costa molisana.

Marina. At Torino di Sangro, the Lecceta RegionalNature Reserve is the only coastal biotope of thistype on the central Adriatic coast with the Coneroone. Totally untouched by human intervention it ishome to the common oak, oriental hornbeam, turkeyoak and elm. There is an attractive large pebblebeach at Le Morge, with rocky outcrops jutting outof the sea.

The Lido di Casalbordino has a broad sandy beach,backed by dunes and a small pinewood. Beyond themouth of the River Sinello, Punta Aderci RegionalReserve expands over a stretch of rocky coastline,alternating between flat tracts of land and craggypeaks, wild dunes and wetlands, and provides theideal environment for birdwatching enthusiasts.There are many beautiful sandy beaches, dunes andsand bars between the rocky headland of PuntaAderci and Punta Penna. Here the Punta Penna light-house warns ships away from the dangers of therocks and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Pennais dedicated to the protectress of fishermen.

The well-known seaside resorts of Vasto and SanSalvo are a little fur ther along. From here the coast-line continues until it reaches the neighbouring re-gion of Molise and becomes par t of the MoliseCoast.

Distesi sui crinali o tenacemente ag-grappati alle falde dei massicci mon-tuosi, cresciuti negli ultimi decenni oancora stretti in un pugno di case, per-lopiù aperti su panorami che trascolo-rano dal verde dei monti alle tonalità ocradella collina argillosa all’azzurro pro-fondo del mare, molti centri della Pro-vincia riservano un motivo di interesseculturale. Il lungo profilo del capoluogo, Chieti, èdominato dal campanile tre-quattrocen-tesco in cotto della Cattedrale di SanGiustino (già ricostruita una prima voltanell’840). Questa città che va scopertanei suoi angoli più interessanti e che viveun dualismo identitario con il più recenteabitato dello Scalo (dove ha sede l’uni-versità), nella valle sottostante, ha unpassato romano. Ne riaffiorano testimonianze nelle Terme,nell’Anfiteatro della Civitella, nel Teatro,nei Tempietti, e persino nei percorsi sot-terranei che di tanto in tanto vengonoaperti al pubblico. La vocazione archeo-logica dell’antica Teate è poi sottolineatadal moderno Museo archeologico citta-dino della Civitella, ma soprattutto dalnotevole Museo Archeologico Nazionalesituato nel verde della Villa Comunale,dove il protagonista indiscusso è il notoGuerriero di Capestrano, la statua picenadall’ampio copricapo. Perched atop mountain crests or clinging precariouslyto steep mountainous slopes, many towns and villagesin the province are worthy of attention. It is still possi-ble to visit tiny hamlets with just a cluster of stonehouses, while other centres have seen incredible urbandevelopment over the last ten years. What most ofthem have in common is a majestic view of the landsweeping down to the distant shoreline, a mosaic ofgreen mountain meadows, ochre-coloured clay hillsand the deep blue of the sea.

Chieti is the hill-top provincial capital. In the heart ofthe city stands the terracotta bell tower of the Cathe-dral of San Giustino, dating back to the fourteenth-fif-teenth century. Chieti has a dual identity, the oldhistoric centre set on the hill, contrasting with the morerecent quarter in the valley below, the Scalo.

Thermal baths, a theatre, an amphitheatre and twosmall temples are testimonies to its ancient Romanorigins. It is even possible to explore the city’s networkof underground tunnels that are occasionally openedto the public. Civitella, the archeological area aroundthe amphitheatre, boasts a newly-built archeologicalmuseum, while the National Archeological Museum ishoused in the Villa Frigerj. Its greatest treasure is thecelebrated Capestrano Warrior, a statue standing overtwo metres high, famous for his wide, broad cap.

Art lovers will be drawn to the Pinacoteca Barbella, theTeatro Marrucino has a busy calendar of shows andperformances to satisfy theatre-goers and visitors ofa more scientific bent will be fascinated by the univer-sity’s biomedical sciences museum.

Corso Marrucino runs through the heart of the citycentre. Here visitors can stroll, enjoy the shop win-dows and pause for a coffee or a drink at one of themany bars or cafès. The very pretty Vico square withthe baroque church of San Domenico overlooks theCorso, as does the Chamber of Commerce building,

constructed in the eclectic style of fascist architecture.There are incredible views of the Maiella and GranSasso mountain ranges to be seen from parts of theold walls that encircle the city.

For those visitors who really wish to experience first-hand the Teatino spirit, the Good Friday procession isa moving and evocative occasion. The processionwinds its way through the city centre, followed by anall-male choir whose heartrending chanting of the Mi-serere by Selecchj is accompanied by the equallypoignant sounds of violins.

The area that runs along the Pescara river valley belowChieti has become a commercial and industrial zone.After the town of Scalo in the valley, the plains openout onto the agricultural area of Sambuceto lyingbelow San Giovanni Teatino.

Continuing on towards the north-eastern slopes of“Mother Mountain”, a visit to Guardiagrele is an ab-solute must. Not only does the medieval town offerpanoramic views of the Maiella Massif and the sea, itis a lively and festive place, particularly on Sundaymornings when the church bells of Santa Maria Mag-giore ring out at midday. Visitors throng the streets,browse in the shops, treat themselves to Guardia-grele’s renowned gastronomic specialties and pur-chase work by local artisans made out of wrought ironand copper. Guardiagrele is also famous for the ex-quisite work of its goldsmiths, particularly presentose(filigree pendants) and sciacquajje (earrings). Themain church, built out of Maiella stone, has an impos-ing bell tower. On one side of the church is a porchdecorated with an enormous fresco of St. Christopher,by the Renaissance painter Andrea De Litio. Thechurch complex also houses a small museum of sa-cred art. One of its precious treasures is a proces-sional crucifix displaying the magnificent art of thecelebrated fifteenth-century goldsmith, Nicola deGuardiagrele.

Not far away is the village of Rapino that is known bypottery lovers as a centre for ceramic art along withthe more famous Castelli Teramano. Individual, one-off pieces are created here, decorated in the traditionalcolours of yellow, green, blue and orange. Fedele Cap-pelletti and other masters of the ninteenth century havebestowed an iconographic heritage of flourishing, tra-ditional rural landscapes on today’s artists. Every 8May, Rapino celebrates the Feast of the Little Virgins.Girls from the village, decked out in gold jewellery anddressed in pastel-coloured tunics, make their way inprocession to the Church of the Madonna del Carpino.

In the foothills, the town of Pretoro celebrates the feastof its patron saint, San Domenico Abate and The Wolf,on the first Sunday in May. The festivities begin with aprize-giving to the biggest and most beautiful snakesbrought to the event. After this, there is a dramatic re-enactment of the saint’s story. A man and his wifehave their newborn baby stolen by a wolf while outcollecting wood; the saint hears their prayers for helpand intervenes, miraculously persuading the wolf toreturn the child unharmed. Pretoro is another medievaltown with a cluster of stone houses on the Valle delForo. Two churches deserve a visit, the Church of San-t’Andrea and the Church of San Nicola; the latter hasa beautiful seventeenth century terracotta Pietà and asculpted wooden portal from the same period. The artof woodcarving is still very much alive here. Along theroad that leads to Passo Lanciano, visitors can alsostop at the small sanctuary of the Madonna dellaMazza.

The terrible landslide that struck Roccamontepiano in1765 swept away everything in its wake and very lit-tle survived. Today, the remains of the Monastery ofSan Pietro are still visible, and the Convent of SanFrancesco Caracciolo still stands, along with a fewscattered, abandoned buildings. The recently builtChurch of San Rocco is a tribute to Saint Roche, a na-tive of Montpellier, who is said to have found shelter in

La chiesadi San Rocco, eretta in anni recenti, si ri-collega al culto del pellegrino di Mont-pellier che trovò ricovero in una grottapresso una sorgente. Qui è stata co-struita una fontana da cui, dal 14 al 16agosto, si attinge acqua miracolosa contipici boccaletti di ceramica, nel climagioioso della festa di San Rocco. Le dodici contrade che compongonoFara Filiorum Petri, di origine longo-barda, nella fredda serata del 16 gennaiosi illuminano invece delle alte fiammeche consumano le Farchie (larghi fascidi canne alti diversi metri). Questo spet-tacolare rito mediterraneo localmente siricollegherebbe anche all’intervento mi-racoloso di Sant’Antonio Abate, che perproteggere l’abitato dall’occupazione espaventare le truppe francesi avrebbedato fuoco ad un vicino boschetto diquerce. the nearby cave of a mountain spring. A fountain wasbuilt on the spot, and here each year, on the feast ofSan Rocco between 14th and 16th August, people col-lect the miraculous waters in small ceramic jugs in afestive and joyous atmosphere.

The twelve districts that make up Fara Filiorum Petri,celebrate instead the night of 16 January. In the chillwinter darkness, long sticks several metres high andtied together, are ignited and flames illuminate the nightsky. This spectacular rite has ancient Mediterraneanorigins, but it is also a reminder of a miracle performedby Sant’Antonio Abate, who to protect the local popu-lation from French occupation, scared the troops awayby setting fire to a nearby oak wood.

Tiny San Martino sulla Marrucina spreads along thecrest of a hill and one of the best wineries in the wholeof Abruzzo is to be found here. Inside the parishchurch of San Cristinziano is a late sixteenth centuryprocessional crucifix, the work of a local goldsmith.The village celebrates the marriage of San Giuseppeand the Vergine Maria, every year on 23rd January.

Palombaro, the “guardian of the Maiella”, overlooks themeeting place of two rivers, the Avello and the Verdethat flow into the Aventino. As a farming centre it has al-ways played an important role in the economy of thearea. Not far from the town, a path follows an ancienttrack used by shepherds to reach the high pastures ofthe Martellese and Mount Ugni. Continuing on the pathit is possible to reach the Grotta Sant’Angelo. In one ofthe most dramatic settings of the Maiella, the impressivesite contains the ruins of an eleventh-twelfth centuryBenedictine church dedicated to Sant’Agata d’Ugni andSant’Angelo, protector of shepherds and their sheepduring transhumance. The site has even more ancientorigins however, and was probably associated with afertility cult in pre-Roman times. In the Parish Churchof Palombaro there is a statue of the Madonna della Li-bera, while in the Chiesa dell’Assunta, a beautiful

Nei dintorni delpaese, un sentiero che ricalca il percorsodi un antico braccio tratturale utilizzatodai pastori per raggiungere i pascoli delMartellese e del monte Ugni porta allaGrotta Sant’Angelo. Nel grande am-biente, sicuramente dedicato al cultodella fertilità anche in epoca preromana,oggi si trovano i resti di una chiesa be-nedettina dell’XI-XII secolo dedicata aSant’Agata d’Ugni, e poi a Sant’Angelo,protettore della transumanza. La Parroc-chiale conserva invece una statua dellaMadonna della Libera, e tiene il Bambinoin grembo la bella Madonna lignea visi-bile nella Chiesa dell’Assunta. Ancor più immersa nel cuore montanodella provincia, Palena si raggiunge piùagevolmente da Guardiagrele passandoai piedi di Casoli con il suo castello (dacui deviare eventualmente per ammirarel’altro castello, medievale, di Roccasca-legna appollaiato minacciosamente suun dirupo). L’abitato è rinato dopo glieventi bellici. La chiesa barocca del Ro-sario col rosone ricamato in pietra e unastatua lignea della Vergine della Neve colBambino del XV sec., San Francesco, ilpiccolo Teatro Aventino ottocentescovanno assaporati passeggiando in cen-tro. Il Castello Ducale, abbarbicato suuna rupe e ricostruito nel 1950, ospita il

Madonna holds the child on her lap.Palena, risen from the ashes of the War, is in the heartof the province and is easily reached via Guardiagrele.On the way, visitors may like to make a detour afterCasoli Castle to visit the medieval castle of Rocca-scalegna perched menacingly on top of a precipice.The baroque Church of the Rosario in Palena is wortha visit, with its intricately carved stone rose windowand a fifteenth century wooden statue of the Virgin ofthe Snow with Child. Strolling around the town, visitorswill also come across the Church of San Francescoand the tiny ninteenth century Teatro Aventino. TheCastello Ducale, clinging to the top of a rocky crag,was rebuilt in 1950 and today houses the Museum ofGeology and Paleontology. On display is an iterestingcollection of miocene marine vertebrates. Every yearon 2 July, crowds of people make the pilgrimage up asteep mountain path to the Sanctuary of the Madonnadell’Altare (1272 m), on the slopes of Mount Porrara.It was here that Pietro Angelerio, later Pope CelestinoV, retired to live a hermit’s life of fasting and prayer.Not far from here, at a short distance from Montene-rodomo is the archeological site of the ancient Romantown, Iuvanum.

At Orsogna, inside the Church of San Nicola there isanother processional crucifix by the master goldsmith,Nicola da Guardiagrele. Here the local people alwayscelebrate the Tuesday after Easter, underlining the im-portance they attach to their traditions and customs,and their sense of cultural identity. The feast is calledI Talami and it involves a rather unusual procession ofcarts on which young actors re-enact scenes from theOld and New Testaments. In recent years, the townhas also begun to celebrate the Feast of the Assump-tion on 15th August in the same way. The view of themountains that can be seen in the background ofMichetti’s painting La figlia di Jorio, is exactly the sameview of the Maiella that can be admired from Orsogna.A short distance away is Sant’Eusanio del Sangro,the birthplace of Cesare De Titta, local writer and poet.

Alla più age-vole carrozzabile i pellegrini preferisconoil sentiero montano. E non sono moltodistanti i suggestivi scavi archeologici diIuvanum (città italica e poi municipio ro-mano), nel comune di Montenerodomo.Ad Orsogna, un’altra croce astile di Ni-cola da Guardiagrele (conservata nellachiesa di San Nicola), ed un’altra festasottolineano l’identità culturale locale. His People of Abruzzo, written entirely in dialect, is atelling and affectionate portrait of the people of this re-gion in all their simplicity, desperation and irony. Thereare several well-conserved baroque buildings in thetown, of which Palazzo Finamore is one of the finest.

In common with many places in the centre and southof Italy, the Holy Week celebrations in Lanciano arereminiscent of Spanish religious rites. The processionis accompanied by the sound of the raganella, awooden instrument that produces a sad, deep lament.Lanciano’s history goes back a long way. It is believedto have been founded by one of Enea’s companionsafter fleeing Troy. Important market fairs were heldhere during the Reign of Naples. Today it is an elegant,lively city, hosting many cultural attractions andevents. Apart from Holy Week, the city has numerousoccasions during the year dedicated to celebrating andfeasting. In August, the election of the Mastrogiuratorecalls the time when the city enjoyed special privi-leges and could nominate a learned person as magis-trate to support the mayor in administering andpolicing the city. Also in August is the Feast of San-t’Egidio where traditionally ladies are given little bells.In September, the Gift to Santa Maria del Ponte is cel-ebrated with processions and harvest offers, while on23rd December, La Squilla is an occasion to renderhomage to the older people in the family and exchangegifts. The historic centre is a delight to explore on footwith its narrow streets and terracotta buildings. Visi-tors can stroll down to the Cathedral of Santa Mariadel Ponte that faces onto the Piazza Plebiscito. Thecathedral was built on the bridge that once connectedthe piazza to the field where the market fairs were held.The thirteenth century Santa Maria Maggiore also de-serves a visit, as does the church of San Francesco,which contains the venerated relics of the MiraculousEucharist.

Il borgo,oltre ad alcuni edifici religiosi e ad un Palazzo baronale costruito nel ‘600dai Caccianini, che inglobarono nella loro dimora strutture preesistenti (tracui una torre trecentesca), ha anche un breve passaggio di raccordo tra an-tico castro e nuovi quartieri a tre campate, in mattoni e archi a tutto sesto. ings of note and a palace built in theseventeenth century by the Caccianinifamily, who incorporated pre-existingbuildings into their noble residence, in-cluding a fourteenth century tower.There is also a short walk under a se-ries of pointed brick arches joining theancient Roman castrum to the newresidential areas.

Arielli was bombed and badly dam-aged during the Second World War.The churches of San Rocco and SanMichele, both dating back to the thir-teenth century have been rebuilt. In-side the Sanctuary of the Madonnadelle Grazie, there is a precious, fif-teenth century wooden statue of theMadonna with Child.

Arriving from the north, Francavilla alMare is the first town on the Chieticoast. Today it is a busy seaside re-sort, famous for its colourful carnivalfloats and fireworks on the sea on18th August. At the end of the nine-teenth century, it was the meetingplace for artists and writers, such as

D’Annunzio and his followers. The painter, Francesco Paolo Michetti,bought the fifteenth century convent of Santa Maria del Gesu high on a hillabove the town, and it became the artists’ headquarters, a place to dicussand exchange ideas. As a painter, Michietti developed an original and un-usual style, a cross between decadent symbolism and photographic real-ism. Two of his large paintings, The Snakes and The Crippled are housedin the Michetti Museum, which also organizes exhibitions and other cul-tural events. Inside the modern church of San Franco is a fifteenth centuryostensory by Nicola da Guardiagrele.

A little way inland, Ripa Teatina can be instantly recognized by its bell toweron the crest of a hill overlooking the Alento Valley. During the grape harvestseason, the countryside all around is impregnated with the smell of grape

A statue of Rocky Marciano proudly remindsvisitors that this small town was the birthplace of thefather of the champion boxer, who grew up in theU.S.A. and became famous after winning 49 matchesin a row.Set amidst hills covered in vineyards Miglianico isbest known for its wine production. The town centrewas originally concentrated around the late medievalcastle (after being damaged during the war, it was re-built as residential housing); the Comune now spreadsover eight districts. The writer D’Annunzio, andMichetti the painter, both drew inspiration from thisplace, which is situated not far from where the RiverDentolo meets the River Foro. On 27th July, the feastof San Pantaleone is still celebrated here, although ina completely different way to how the two artists de-scribed the ritual, which they claimed was almost bar-baric and totally incomprehensible.

D’Annunzio described Ortona as «glowing whitely likea scorching eastern city on a hill in Palestine». Look-ing up at the town today, set high above the port, D’An-nunzio’s image springs vividly to life. And from thebeautiful promenade, known as the Passegiata Orien-tale, visitors to the town can look out and contemplatethe deep blue of the sea. There are numerous culturalinstitutions in the town. The Pinacoteca “Michele eBasilio Cascella” is currently closed for restoration andrenovation work. Not far from the castle however isthe National Tostiano Institute and the Abruzzo Mu-seum of Music, dedicated to the composer FrancescoPaolo Tosti, a native of Ortona. The relics of St.Thomas are kept inside the Cathedral of San Tom-maso. Badly bombed and damaged during the war, aswas much of the town, the cathedral has a beautifulgothic portal. One of the bloodiest battles of the Sec-ond World War was fought here and the people of Or-tona were awarded a gold medal for bravery. TheBattle Museum retells the painful history of Ortona’srole during the war.

The Gustav line, the German line of defence in the Sec-ond World War, connected the Chieti coast to Cassino.Many civilians who lived along the line were caught upin the ferocious fighting, and a number of small townsand villages were raised to the ground by the retreat-ing Germans or badly damaged by the Allies’ bombs.Fortunately, the area’s cultural identity managed to sur-vive in spite of the terrible destruction. Some minorworks of art that escaped war damage, include a se-ries of beautiful fountains in the area around CanosaSannita, a member of the Wine Cities Association, andthe Palazzo Martucci that today houses the Museum ofWar and Peace. The war-damaged medieval castle ofCrecchio, just a few kilometers away, is where KingVittorio Emanuele III and the Italian Chief of Staffstayed after the Armistice on 8th September 1943, be-fore embarking at Ortona. Today, the castle houses theAbruzzo Byzantine and Late-Medieval ArcheologicalMuseum.

Like Ortona, San Vito Chietino stands on a headlandoverlooking a succession of tiny inlets and the stun-ning Costa dei Trabocchi. From here, the panoramastretches as far as Gargano and the Isole Tremiti.Today, the Marina is a popular seaside resort, but itsfame is linked to the fact that it was here that D’An-nunzio chose to retire to what he called his “Her-mitage”, to write The Triumph of the Death.

Fossacesia, a little further south, came under fire duringthe battle of Sangro. However, its cultural roots lie in thebeauty of its surroundings. A temple to the goddessVenus was originally built on a promontory a short dis-tance from where the town stands today. The splendidabbey of San Giovanni in Venere was later constructedon top of the temple ruins. The abbey, built in Gothic-Cisternian style, has a thirteenth century carved marbleportal and three magnificent apses. In the eleventh cen-tury, Abbot Oderisio II founded Rocca San Giovanni todefend the abbey and the local people, bringing them infrom the countryside to live inside the more secure walls

The church is dedi-cated to Saint Matthew the Apostle; thebell tower and the municipal palace builtin medieval style are the only monu-ments of note to have withstood theravages of the Second World War.Further inland, Bomba stands overlook-ing the lake of the same name. The arti-ficial reserve on the Sangro River wasconstructed in the 1950s to supplyRome with energy and it has broughtundoubted economic benefits to thearea. The parish church of Santa Mariadel Popolo was built in the middle of theXVIII century by the uncle of theSpaventa brothers, Silvio, a famous lib-eral and patriot who later became min-ister under the Italian government afterunification, and Betrando, a renownedphilosopher. The house where they wereborn is still visible. Nearby is Monte Pal-lano, where important archeologicalfindings have to come light in recentyears. Digs are still going on in the hopethat more may be discovered abouthuman presence in the area that goesback hundreds and hundreds of years.

At Atessa, the parish church of San Leucio, which has a beautifully richBaroque interior, owes its origins to a combination of art and legend. Originallybuilt in the IX century, it occupies the spot where the community of Ate joinedthe community of Tixe. According to legend, the two communities were un-able to unite because of the presence of a ferocious dragon. Bishop Leucio for-tunately saved the people from danger, and inside the church a rib of themonster (in reality a fossil belonging to some long dead mammal), remainson display to remind everyone of the origins of the town. Here too, is a pre-cious ostensory by Nicola da Guardiagrele. Other attractions include the Gothicdoor of San Giuseppe (one of four that have survived the partial transforma-tion of the city walls), a permanent exhibition of Christmas cribs in the oldcovered market area that is interesting to see as it gives an idea of how life was

La Parrocchiale di Santa Maria delPopolo fu ricostruita alla metà del XVIIIsecolo dallo zio dei due più noti Spa-venta, Silvio (patriota liberale e poi mini-stro dell’Italia unificata) e Bertrando(filosofo). La loro casa natale, da dovepoi partirono per vite da intellettuali mili-tanti e di spessore, è ancora visibile. Ilvicino monte Pallano, sede di importantiritrovamenti archeologici negli ultimianni, lascia sperare in altre sorprese sto-riche che facciano ulteriore luce sulle piùantiche presenze umane in zona. Ad Atessa, leggenda e arte si fondonoper dar vita alla parrocchiale di San Leu-cio: il bell’edificio, originario del IX se-colo e con un ricco interno barocco,

lived in Atessa in times gone by, and a fountain by mod-ern architect Giò Pomodoro in Piazza Oberdan. In Au-gust, the town attracts visitors to its gastronomy fair,known as the Corti Antiche. A short distance from thetown is the Convent San Pasquale in Contrada Vallaspra.

Not far from here is Carpineto Sinello, standing on theslopes of Monte Sorbo. The picturesque centre isdominated by the massive presence of the Ducal Cas-tle that was transformed into a noble residence in theeighteenth century. The waters of the River Sinelloplayed an important part in the local economy as theywere used to drive some mills in the area. Scerni,whose origins go back to late-medieval times, be-longed to the D’Avalos family. Its main cultural attrac-tion is the Church of San Panfilo. Originally built in thefourteenth century, it has been renovated and restoredmany times; today it has a double flight of steps lead-ing up to a baroque brick façade.

The British Military Cemetry can be found at Torino diSangro. 2,167 Commonwealth soldiers gave their liveshere at the Battle of Sangro that took place betweenNovember and December 1943. In the town itself, theparish church of San Salvatore has a pretty sixteenthcentury façade. The coast with its beaches, trabocchiand the Lecceta Nature Reserve are all close by.

The procession which takes place each June at theSanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli in Casalbor-dino, is mentioned in D’Annuzio’s The Triumph of theDeath and is depicted in Michetti’s enormous painting,The Procession of the Crippled. The Sanctuary (insidewhich is a Benedictine library) and the feast, whichtoday is quite different from that portrayed by D’An-nuzio and Michetti, is a reminder of a miracle that tookplace here in 1576, when a Pollutri farmer wasawarded for his devotion. His fields remained miracu-lously undamaged when a violent hailstorm struck thearea. Nearby, the ruins of the Monastery of Santo Ste-fano ad Rivum Maris are all that are left of a large Bene-

Along the coast, Vasto, ancient Histo-nium, is without doubt one of the re-gion’s gems. It owes much of itsillustrious past to the Spanish D’Avalosfamily, who ruled over the town for threehundred years until 1798. VittoriaColonna who married Francesco D’Ava-los in the early part of the sixteenth cen-tury, lived like a Spanish princess in thefamily’s noble palazzo. She became fa-mous for her verses after her husband,with whom she was very much in love,died. The Palazzo D’Avalos todayhouses the Civic Museum, which has acollection of archeological findings andan exhibition of paintings by Abruzzoartists. Part of the imposing CaldorescoCastle has been turned into residentialhousing. The town is also the birthplaceof the patriot and poet Gabriele Rossetti,who was forced to flee to London be-cause of his support for the liberalcause. His son, Dante Gabriel Rossettiwas one of the founders of the pre-

Raphaelite movement. The Rossetti family house is still visible today.

Castiglione Messer Marino, situated almost on the borders with Moliseand near the Italic temples of Schiavi, is famous for its carnival. Duringcarnival time, the favourite dish is le sagne a lu cutter, flavoured with a mixof liver sausage, bacon and peperoncino. The carnival atmosphere is madeeven more lively and joyous by the presence of local pulcinella. Inside thetown that takes its name from the feudal lord Marino Caracciolo, the MotherChurch has a beautiful stone-carved portal and a painting by a local artistfrom Lanciano, Federico Spoltore. Every 11th September, a processionwinds its way into the countryside to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delMonte. The celebrations last all day and into the night with everyone en-joying an enormous open-air picnic.

In paese, c’è la parrocchiale di San Salvatore, con labella facciata cinquecentesca. Le spiagge, i trabocchi e la lecceta distanopoco.La processione che si tiene in giugno a Casalbordino presso il Santuariodella Madonna dei Miracoli fu tratteggiata con le tinte fosche del Trionfodella Morte e del dipinto michettiano La via degli Storpi. L’edificio (che con-serva anche una biblioteca monastica benedettina) e la festa, che oggi sisvolge secondo modalità ben diverse, ricordano un miracolo avvenuto nel1576 per premiare la devozione di un agricoltore di Pollutri che ebbe il suocampo illeso da una forte grandinata. Ancora sulla costa, Vasto, l’antica Histonium, è senza dubbio una delleperle della regione. Il passato illustre è legato soprattutto alla lunga domi-nazione degli spagnoli D’Avalos, che terminò nel 1798 dopo tre secoli. Nelcentrale Palazzo D’Avalos, dove visse come castellana la poetessa VittoriaColonna, oggi si trovano i Musei civici, che ad una collezione archeologicaaffiancano l’esposizione dei quadri di pittori abruzzesi, come i vastesi Pa-lizzi. L’imponente Castello Caldoresco, invece, è ora in parte adibito ad abi-tazione. La città diede anche i natali a Gabriele Rossetti (è ancora presentela sua casa), poeta patriota costretto alla fuga a Londra per l’ardire dei suoiversi e padre di quel Dante Gabriel che divenne uno dei maggior preraffa-elliti inglesi. Carnevale è la vera festa di Castiglione Messer Marino, quasi ai confinicon il Molise e non distante dai templi italici di Schiavi d’Abruzzo. Il piattodel giorno sono le sagne a lu cutter condite con salsicce di fegato e dicarne, pancetta e polvere di peperoncino, da mangiare preferibilmente conle mani, in un clima reso gioioso dai locali Pulcinella. Nel borgo che prendeil nome dal feudatario Marino Caracciolo c’è il bel portale in pietra dellaChiesa Madre, che all’interno conserva tele del lancianese Federico Spol-tore. Al santuario di Santa Maria del Monte, in aperta campagna, invece,l’11 settembre si va in processione e si festeggia con un grande pic-nic finoa tarda sera.

La varietà dei paesaggi si compone nelmosaico di una tavola imbandita da maniesperte. Filari rigogliosi di viti, spesso al-levate nei classici pergoloni, ammantanoi terreni collinari di gran parte della pro-vincia di Chieti e la rendono, tra le brezzedell’Adriatico e i massicci montuosi del-l’interno, una delle aree più vitate dellapenisola. E nel calice brilla quasi sempre il rossorubino, magari con riflessi granati, di unintenso ed asciutto Montepulcianod’Abruzzo Doc. Ma può riservare sor-prese altrettanto interessanti sorseggiarela versione Cerasuolo dello stesso viti-gno, un nettare rosso ciliegia, fresco ericco di un buon corredo aromatico. I caratteri identitari dell’arte enologicaprovinciale si esprimono con risultati avolte importanti attraverso il lavoro at-tento di grandi cantine cooperative e pic-coli produttori. La ricerca della qualità ècostante: tra i bianchi, alla storica DocTrebbiano d’Abruzzo, si affianca ora laDoc Tullum, che nella zona di Tollo esaltaanche i vitigni autoctoni Pecorino e Pas-serina. L’oro giallo, invece, localmente vieneprodotto almeno dal II secolo d.C. eprende il nome di olio extravergine dioliva Colline Teatine Dop (eventualmenteaccompagnato dalle menzioni geografi-che aggiuntive Frentano o Vastese).Fruttato, equilibrato, erbaceo, con leg-gere sensazioni di amaro e piccante,trova nell’autoctona Gentile di Chieti e nelLeccino le principali cultivar che entranonella sua composizione. From the coastal resorts to the moun-tain villages, expert hands create a delicious mosaic ofcolours and tastes to satisfy even the most discerningpalate. Between the mountains and the sea is one ofthe largest winegrowing areas in Italy. The hills of theChieti Province are covered with lush vineyards. Thisis the terroir of the splendid ruby-red Montepulcianod’Abruzzo Doc, an intense dry wine with a full-bodiedflavour. Visitors to the area would also do well to trythe lesser-known Cerasuolo, which comes from thesame grape varietal. Richly aromatic, it is has a fruitybouquet with nuances of cherry.The excellent quality of the wines here is guaranteedby the constant research that goes into winemaking,by both the larger cooperatives in the province and thesmaller, independent producers. One of the most im-portant white wines that has traditionally been pro-duced in the area is the Doc Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. Thishas now been joined by the Doc Tullum, that comesfrom the area around Tollo, and is made from two in-digenous grape varieties, Pecorino and Passerina.The ‘liquid gold’ of Abruzzo here takes the name olioextravergine di oliva Colline Teatine Dop (dependingon the geographical area where the oil is produced,Frentano or Vastese may also be added to the name).It has been produced here since at least the secondcentury A.D. It has a frutty, balanced, grassy taste witha slightly bitter or spicy flavour. The two olive cultivarsthat are native to the area are Gentile di Chieti and Lec-cino.The traditional Chietino menu has been influencedsince ancient times by its devotion to Mother Earth,the production of durum wheat and the practice oftranshumance. Inland, the dishes are robust countryfare with richly intense flavours, while down on thecoast, simply cooked fresh fish perfectly reflects thetraditional way of life of the traboccanti. The pasta of Fara San Martino, situated at the foot ofthe Maiella, rightly enjoys a worldwide reputation,thanks to the flowing waters of the Verde river. It is nocoincidence that the Hotel and Catering School of VillaSanta Maria that is located near here, has trained someof the world’s top chefs. Guardiagrele is a treasure chest made of stone. Openit up, and visitors will discover that it is a gastronome’sparadise: excellent restaurants, top food and wine pro-ducers, premium meat products, porchetta, extra vir-gin olive oil, wheat flour, spelt, barley and lentils, thelist is endless. And at the end of a delicious meal, whocan resist a sweet dessert to round it off? Here the artof making sweets and cakes has been passed downfrom generation to generation. First there is the localnougat or torrone, sweet and spiced, then there arethe delicious amaretti and almond biscuits, followedby the perfectly-formed marzipan fruits. But perhapsthe greatest temptation of all are the “sise demòneche”, literally “nuns’ breasts’’, but rather morepolitely translated as “three mountains”; these lightand fluffy sponge cakes are shaped into three peaks,filled with custard cream and sprinkled with icingsugar. The city is also famous for a type ofpasta called lu rentrocelo, similar to thick spaghetti, itis eaten with mutton sauce.Spiedini (small pieces of ewe’s meat cooked on skew-ers) is a traditional dish of inland Chieti that has an ex-traordinarily rich gastronomic heritage. The light andfluffy palotte cace e ove, (basically cheese balls intomato sauce) are particularly moreish, but other tra-ditional dishes include coratella d’agnello with eggsand cheese (the main ingredient is lamb offal), pizz’ effòjje with cornflour and wild vegetables, cheese pie,pork cif e ciaf, traditionally baked bread, fresh spicypeperoncino, truffles, sheep’s cheese, ricotta cheese,caciocavalli and scamorze cheeses, honey, wine taral-lucci biscuits and vino cotto, an intense dessert wine,juicy cherries from Giuliano Teatino, liqueurs and after-dinner drinks such as ratafia, made from amarenecherries and red Montepulciano wine, and centerbe,distilled from aromatic mountain herbs.Pork also plays an important role in the area’s gastro-nomic tradition. Apart from the enormous choice ofdifferent types of sausages, fresh and dried liver,pressed salami and cured hams, there is one particu-lar dish that every visitor to the region must try. It iscalled the Ventricina del Vastese, and can only befound in the villages nestled in the hills and foothillsbetween Scerni-Cupello and Schiavi d’Abruzzo. It also has annoia (curedmeat) and delicious cakes, called neole that are filledwith grape jam. Ortona, together with other nearbytowns such as Tollo, Arielli, Canosa Sannita, Frisaare all famous for their delicious grapes, in particularthe white Regina (or Pergolone) and Cardinal.The main headquarters of the Enoteca Regionaled’Abruzzo are located in Ortona.Travelling between Ortona and Fossacesia, visitorswill come across the citrus groves of the Costa deiTrabocchi. The oranges grown here are an extremelyold variety; they were first brought to the region byJewish refugees seeking refuge under the Reign ofNaples. The groves extend down the coastline forabout 15 kilometres, and as well as oranges, lemonsand mandarins also grow in abundance. And this beingthe Costa dei Trabocchi, in the summertime it is pos-sible to enjoy a quite unique dining experience by hav-ing a meal of fresh fish on one of the trabocchi. In Vasto, the prized local artichokes of Cupello are theperfect accompaniment to Ventricina del Vastese.More culinary delights include fried fish (scapece) thathave first been marinated in a golden sauce of saffronand vinegar and an exceptional fish broth, calledbrodetto alla vastese. The soup is made in a largeearthenware pot and is a wonderful combination oftomatoes, garlic, sweet fresh red peppers, oil, salt,parsley, and in a feast of aromas and flavours, piecesof cod, sole, red mullet, scorpion fish, octopus andcuttlefish are gradually added to the steaming pot.

I filari di Ripa Teatina e Miglianico anticipano quelli di Ortona. La cittadinaportuale, oltre ai suoi piatti di mare, alle dolci neole (o ferratelle o pizzelle)farcite con marmellata d’uva e all’insaccato annoia, in fatto di sapori devela sua reputazione proprio all’uva, che in questa zona, insieme con Tollo,Arielli, Canosa Sannita, Frisa ed altri comuni, è particolarmente rinomataanche per vitigni destinati al consumo da tavola quali Regina bianca (o Per-golone) e Cardinal. Non va scordato, poi, che ad Ortona ha sede l’EnotecaRegionale d’Abruzzo.E tra Ortona e Fossacesia, i filari di tanto in tanto cedono il passo agliagrumi della Costa dei Trabocchi: vecchie varietà di arance importate daprofughi sefarditi rifugiatisi nel Regno di Napoli, mandarini e limoni raccoltia mano profumano un tratto di litorale di circa 15 chilometri. D’estate, poi,alcuni trabocchi diventano luoghi insoliti dove assaporare una cena dipesce avvolti dal blu del mare.A Vasto, infine, i pregiati carciofi locali, che legano la loro fama al vicino co-mune di Cupello, e la già citata ventricina fanno da corollario ad altro. Quiinfatti si sosta per gustare con meditata alternanza ora un boccone agro discapece, ovvero grossi tagli di pesce fritto marinati in una salsa dorata diaceto e zafferano, ora un buon piatto di brodetto alla vastese. In questazuppa cucinata nel largo tegame di coccio, a pomodoro, spicchi d’aglio, pe-perone dolce rosso fresco, olio, sale, prezzemolo, si mescolano progres-sivamente, in una festa di profumi, merluzzi, sogliole, triglie, gallinella,qualche polipo o seppiolina, cicale di mare…riservando a ciascuno il suotempo di cottura.
