DECEMBER 2018 Newsletter

The sassy Voodoo Dolls enjoyed their outing with us today! They are a diverse group, some

are wild women of the sea or the forest, some are glamourous divas and some may be from

the future.

Mary-Ellen combines her love of nature and her astute observation skills, with a lot of

imagination and humour, into creating her sculptured Dollys or Voodoo Dolls.

Each Doll has a quirky name and a background story. We met Glomesh Lepidopter (with the

dazzling gown and butterflies), Faith Bacon-esque (the famous Fan dancer), Concomitant (the

bride), #@me2_knows that No means No (mosaic gown created from shattered black car glass

found at campsite) and BrinyBrawnyLustyLady (with her gown of muscle shells).

Mary-Ellen referenced the European Wunderkammer – Cabinet of Curiosities – which were

rooms or cabinets filled with strange items discovered in nature or science. The collectors

were often women – searching for new items to study.

Mary-Ellen loves camping and travelling with her husband Chris – who has also become adept at discovering odd treasures. Many

strange & inspirational finds have occurred at campsites – sometimes natures offerings and sometimes other travellers detritus.

We are currently living in a throw-away society – it’s wonderful to be able to re-use discarded products and re-invent them.

I was amazed with the range of items Mary-Ellen has used, and which tricked our eyes into seeing them as something else.

Found items included: shells, seedpods, seaweed, feathers, flowers, florist wrap, flotsam & jetsam, twigs, nail gun plastic, silicon

place mat, rubber gloves, Jex scrubber, her mother’s vintage glomesh bag, shoe polish, paper, Op shop finds and building site finds.

Mary-Ellen also showed her textile collage work and the expressive sculptures she has exhibited at Wangaratta Petites and

CrossxPollination. She advised us to try looking with different perspectives – eg like a bird, or with a microscopic view. That it is

restorative to play, share, learn, reference history, discover new ideas and skills, and to keep creating with our hands.

Break rules – anything goes! And reminded us – there is beauty in imperfection.

The Exhibition Committee met prior to the November meeting, the themes for the Exhibition and the Challenge

were decided.

Welcome to Sue McBride who has joined the Committee.

Our Christmas tree is adorned waiting for Santa I believe

I haven’t been really naughty this year, well maybe a little

bit, so hopefully there will be something under the tree.

I wish you all Merry Christmas and the Happiest New Year

December 2018 Editorial

Sue Palmer [email protected]

Hello from your new Editor!

Lisa has introduced me to the wonders of creating the newsletter, we

have had some interesting sessions.

Suggestions made at previous meetings have been discussed by the

committee. The committee has agreed to replace equipment used in

workshops as required. Other suggestions were for new library books,

one idea was Quilting related novels. Any ideas for speakers,

workshops or library book titles would be most welcome.

Thanks for your suggestions regarding charity donations for Christmas ,

the donation will be $1000.

In 2019 we would like to get to know you better, something about you

to share with the members. We might approach you with a short questionnaire . If you are happy to answer a few

questions and have a photo taken, we will find you. If not no pressure.

Cheers Sue Palmer

Thank you to everyone who participated in our “Up-cycled Archibald” Challenge. The works were amazing and it was so difficult to choose a favourite.

Congratulations to Donna McNeil-Brown and Bronwyn Drehlich for receiving awards for their works.

I am now in the process of finding out how we can turn it into a travelling suitcase exhibition, so watch this space.

I have now added a gallery to the website for our St John of God Quilts and Snuggly Quilts. This will allow everyone to see the marvellous work we do and free up space in our newsletter for other things.

I will also be planning a day to get together with some of the children in rehab at Grace McKellar, their families and staff, to make some blocks and put together the blocks we made at Quilt-In. Zoe Waters was keen to get the children involved, to give them a sense of achievement during the tough times. I look forward to it and will be

asking members if they would like to participate, when we finalise and work out exactly what is achievable.

Have a wonderful Christmas, I look forward to seeing all your show and tell when we return.

Cheers, Jodie

30 YEAR BADGES -

Committee Announcements

Saturday 18 May 2018 at Club Italia, Moolap

Guest speaker will be Sugi Kim, who many of you will know as the maker of the amazing prize-winning quilt 'Colourful Retina'.

Trader RSVPs are still coming in - it looks like it will be a good turn-out.

Our charity will be Winged Horse Equine Welfare in Portarlington. They take in unwanted and neglected horses and other animals to

rehabilitate them and ultimately aim to find them a 'forever home'.

Challenge: Black, White & Grey 'Block Lotto'. Create an 8 1/2" block (8" finished) using these colours. A number will be drawn from door

entries and the lucky winner will take home the lot! There will be a prize for the best block.

Entry gifts are being commercially produced, so we won't require a members' sweatshop.

We're asking members for 2 1/2" strips instead of 6 1/2" squares, ie. 'Guess the number of strips'. To be cut across full width of fabric,

selvedge to selvedge. Pass them to Anna by the April meeting. Reduce that stash and get cutting for the Guild!

Groups will be able to reserve a table. Email Anna with numbers.

Due to demand, Club Italia are going to put on a couple of soups for sale on the day.

At that time the badges were offered to members to purchase for $5.00.

For members who had joined the Guild prior to and in 2015 and purchased a badge— please see Cheryl for your Free

Entry voucher for one meeting of your choice up until August 2019.

We have received 1 new magazine, Down Under Textiles Issue 34, 2018.

Once again the magazine is full of interesting articles.

Including Dijanne Cevaal’s Waste Not Want Not – Part 4. This is the end

of her Traveller’s Blanket project.

There has been discussion about the Go Cutter.

The Go Cutter is available for loan and we have 13 Dies—these are listed on page 11.

January Stocktake

Our stocktake will be on Saturday 19th January. Last year it didn’t take long as we had lots of willing

helpers. Hoping for your help again this year.
