M any professions require yearly continuing education for their
members. The grooming industry does not. Yet, thousands of groomers from all over the world voluntarily attend grooming shows. Nearly 5,000 of them recently attended Groom Expo, the largest grooming show in the world. It was held in September at the magnificent Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Why would these groomers close their businesses, travel to grooming shows, and spend money to attend the seminars? They come for things that they can only experience at these shows… education – not only by attending the seminars, but also by watching the grooming competitions, and to be able to connect with others who share their passion. In our amazing industry, you can come by yourself to a show like Groom Expo and meet people who will become your lifelong friends.
As attendees gathered in the registration area, the room was brimming with excitement and anticipation. At their fingertips were grooming tournaments, an immense trade show, seminars and grooming demonstrations, and an entire weekend to network with their peers and other professionals.
They were warmly welcomed by the

smiling face and the cheerful voice of Mr. Frank Brown, Groom Expo’s host and greeter. Several times a day, Joanne Russell, aka Sparkly Barkleigh, took Newbies on a guided tour of the entire convention center to help familiarize them with the layout.
First time attendee, Tarja Tuulikki, came from Norway expressly to attend Groom Expo. “I found out about Groom Expo over the internet, and it became my dream to come and see it” shares Tarja excitedly. “We don’t have anything in Norway that compares to this. I love the trade show –
everything becomes clearer when I can see and touch them in person. And, I am going to every seminar that I can…I am learning so much!”
The seminars at Groom Expo covered almost every facet of grooming – business building techniques, animal behavior and health, grooming demonstrations, mobile grooming topics, and much, much more.
In her Groomer Health and Safety seminar, Lara Latshaw offered a variety of tips to help groomers avoid physical and mental damage. “If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else,”
emphasizes Lara. “As groomers, we want to please people – but sometimes – it’s ok to say no.”
During her seminar, Lara involved the attendees and taught them Foundation Training exercises that help to strengthen and protect their bodies while they groom.
Another speaker who showed groomers how to protect themselves was Doug Parson. His day-long seminar, Staying Safe in the Salon, dealt with pet handling techniques, communicating through body language, and how to recognize the different types of aggression and how to deal with them.

“There are 4.7 million dog bites a year,” said Mr. Parson, and then added. “In 2014 there were 42 deaths from dog bites.”
It was not dog bites, but pet oral health that was the topic of Mary Oquendo’s seminar, Dental Care For Your Pets.
“Many owners are not aware how important dental care is,” says Mary. “More than eighty percent of dogs and seventy percent of cats develop periodontal disease by the age of three. It’s estimated that teeth that are in good shape can extend the life of pets by twenty-fi ve percent.”
Learning how to retail pet dental and other products, market your business, and how to turn problem clients into valued clients, were covered during the weekend business topics.
In his The Land of Making
Money seminar, Chuck Simons gave non-stop ideas to help you work smarter – not harder.
“Have a menu of the services that you off er – and post it where everyone can see it,” says Mr. Simons. “You are limiting yourself if you don’t post your services and add-ons. Use quality equipment and products and retail them to your clients,” Mr. Simons continues. “And, it’s important to set short and long term goals – including a retirement plan.”
Every pet care professional hopes that they will be able to enjoy a comfortable retirement someday. To help groomers plan for a happy retirement, Michael Garvin presented his seminar, Making Th e Most of Social Security. People of all ages listened attentively as Mr. Garvin went over diff erent strategies for maximizing the amount of social security you can
collect and how to determine which one of them is right for you.
The seminars continued throughout the weekend on topics for mobile groomers, cat grooming and handling, many breed grooming and creative grooming demonstrations, and behavior and health topics.
On Friday morning the colossal Trade Show opened. Over 170 booths, overflowing with the latest and greatest products, equipment, and show specials, greeted the attendees as they streamed through the doors.
Gary and Linda Lalonde from Perth, Canada, came to Groom Expo to buy and to learn. “At Groom Expo, we get to see people who have been in the industry for a long time, talk with great vendors, and see wonderful new products,” says Linda Lalonde.

“We always learn things that make our business run smoother.”
“We’re making a new shop, and we want it to be the best it can be,” adds Gary Lalonde. “At this Trade Show we can see the equipment, and even hear how loud it is. Then we can decide what will work best for us.”
First time exhibitor, Cheryl Dauphin, creator of the Equigroom de-shedding tool, was thrilled with the welcome her new grooming tool has received.
“I just started my company in July 2015, and introduced my product through Facebook,” shares Cheryl. “Th e groomers love it! Th e Equigrooms are fl ying out of the booth – I hope I have enough to last the weekend.”
One of the reasons many groomers attend a trade show is so they can try out scissors and other equipment and see how they feel and fit in their hands.
Mr. Ralph Whitman introduced his new stripping tool set, the DiamaStripper. “The DiamaStripper has been nominated for a Barkleigh Honors Award – New Product of the Year,” says Mr. Whitman. “The groomers really love that they can come to our booth to see and try them out.”
Th e Trade Show continued to be a beehive of activity throughout the weekend – with some of the booths selling out of everything they brought – and taking orders for more.
“Th e shopping is fabulous at Groom Expo!” shares Dawn Kinney of Marietta, Georgia. “It’s a good thing that I drive up…I may need a bigger car if I keep fi nding great deals!”
Yes, great deals, exciting new products, demos, and free samples….it was a real party atmosphere. Party? Did someone say party?
We all know that when groomers do something – they give it their all, and the opening night Karaoke party was a testament to that. Th e

participants not only sang with gusto, many of them added choreographed moves as they performed their songs.
“I was pretty sure that I popped a vocal cord while I was doing Karaoke last night,” says a grinning JC Chismar. “But, fortunately, I am still able to talk today…especially since I am competing in the Rescue Roundup Clip-In this afternoon.”
Grooming competitions are a very important part of every Groom Expo. Groom Expo does everything in a ‘big’ way, and the grooming competitions are no exception. Many of the classes were enormous. The Poodle Tournament alone had almost fifty entries.
The grooming competitions at Groom Expo are a true-life example of how dreams can come true…both for the groomers who participate in the contests, and for the ones who watch from the audience.
Groomers who have never entered a competition eagerly watch the competitors in the ring. They have the opportunity to see all of the products and tools that the competitors use, and they are able to watch the grooms from start to finish. And, after the completion of the tournaments, they can go up to the competitors and ‘talk shop’ with them.
The Saturday night events proved to be the pinnacle of the show. The evening began with an elegant dinner prepared by the award winning chefs of the Hershey Lodge. Following the dinner, the PetSmart GroomOLympics Best In Show winner was chosen. The winners of the five grooming tournaments that had taken place on Friday and Saturday went head-to-head with each other to see who would be crowned the GroomOlympics World
Champion. Each of the finalists came out
onto the lighted runway, presented their dog to the audience for their approval - and then on to the judges for a final examination. In the end, Amanda Zeller, with her ‘groomed to perfection’ English Springer Spaniel, Ace, became the 2015 PetSmart GroomOlympic World Champion.
That was just the beginning of the evening excitement…
The entrants in the E-Z Groom Abstract Creative Runway Competition took the stage. In this competition, there was minimal or no color used on the entries. Instead, the contestants were judged on their overall grooming skills and the intricate designs that they sculpted on the dogs and cat (yes, I said cat) that were entered. The elegant designs portrayed beauty in simplicity. The thrilled winner

was Adrianne Pope who placed a stunning design on her gorgeous white Standard Poodle.
Then it was time for the prestigious Barkleigh Honors Awards that showcase achievement in the grooming industry. There were nearly twenty categories that ranged from Up and Coming Groomer of The Year, to New Product of The Year, to Contribution to The Industry.
This year a new category, the Spirit Award, was added. This award is to honor someone who embodies the true spirit of the grooming industry. It’s a tribute to a person who lives and shares the spirit that you see and feel when you attend a show like Groom Expo.
“Grooming is an amazing industry because of all the positivity,” says Todd Shelly, President of Barkleigh Productions.
“The person that was selected represents all of this – upbeat and positive, continually helping others, always ready to lend a hand, a shining example of what the true spirit of this industry is. And – the winner of the first Barkleigh Honors Spirit Award is…Adrianne Pope!”
Groomers and others in the pet care industry are known for their big hearts and the desire to help others. That’s why there is such great support for the Silent Auction and the GEAF (Groomers Emergency Assistance Fund). Funds raised during the weekend are providing many needed services and are helping those in emergency situations.
Groomers with big hearts were center stage on Sunday morning when the final Rescue Round-up Invitational was held.
Everyone, the pets and people alike, who participate in one of these competitions is a winner. Unloved and abandoned pets receive loving makeovers that enable them to have a second chance at being adopted into a ‘fur’ever home. Knowing that they were helping these pets was reward enough for groomers like Alysha Kelly to enter the competition.
“I found out about the Rescue Rodeo Clip-In that was being held on Saturday,” says Alysha. “I entered just so I could help a dog find a home, and to have some fun. I had a Yorkie named Bobbie Joe. I won the class with her and was invited back to compete again on Sunday.
“I drew a mixed breed Doodle type of dog named Bradley for the Sunday competition,” shares Alysha. “In my mind, my only objective was

to give Bradley the best groom that I could, so that he might find a great home - winning any kind of prize didn’t enter my mind.”
Well, apparently Alysha’s determination produced the perfect groom on Bradley - because she was chosen as the winner of the 2015 Rescue Round-Up Invitational. Alysha received an all-expense paid trip on a Barkleigh cruise, a huge trophy and a monetary award, and she and Bradley will appear on the cover of Groomer To Groomer Magazine.
All throughout the weekend, Groomer’s Choice Groomer TV broadcasted at the expo so that groomers from all over the world could experience a bit of Groom Expo. They interviewed industry experts, showed many of the activities, and gave in-depth coverage of all the grooming competitions. They were able to show
extreme close-ups of the dogs as they were being groomed.
The most watched contest, in person and by those viewing Groomer TV, was the Creative Grooming Competition on Sunday afternoon. Participants in this exciting competition begin to plan their entries months in advance. The stage was completely filled with dogs of all shapes, sizes, and colors. As the competition commenced - the magic began….
The stylists started sculpting and carving designs into the brightly colored canines. Soon, their spectacular creations began to emerge from those mounds of hair. There were colorful super heroes, realistic cartoon characters, beautiful princesses, magnificent butterflies, and more. The audience was spellbound as the walking works
of art were unveiled. The excitement mounted as the contestants put the finishing touches on their creations and prepared to be judged.
This is one competition where the spectators get to select their favorite entry as the People’s Choice winner. This winner is determined by the applause of the audience. It may be the most coveted award of all the grooming competitions, in part because the winner is chosen by other groomers, and also because the winner gets to appear on the cover of Groomer To Groomer Magazine.
Every one of the entries was terrific! They showed lots of imagination, creativity, and use of color to achieve their final designs. The atmosphere in the competition area was electrifying! Everyone wanted to see all of the creations and cheer on the one they thought was the best.
GroomertoGroomer.com 17Groomer to Groomer • Vol 34 Ed 12 • December 2015
Every seat was filled, and the crowd spilled far into the Trade Show area.
The audience clapped, whistled, cheered, and screamed for their favorites! There were so many talented groomers and equally awesome creations, that it took three ‘applause-offs’ to select the winner.
Amid deafening cheers and applause, The Mystic Mermaid – created by Angela Kumpe, was selected as the People’s Choice! And, to make that win even sweeter, the judges also awarded Angela first place honors in the Creative Grooming Competition.
Oh, what a thrilling way to end a magnificent Groom Expo! This gathering and these attendees are what the spirit of grooming is all about.
“I leave Groom Expo with such a new energy and excitement that I can’t wait to get back to my salon,”
shares an enthusiastic Terri Gates of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. “Meeting presenters, attendees, and
exhibitors…it ignites my passion to make the world a better place – one cute dog at a time!” ✂

FOR
DIFFERENT
COATSE by Ingrid King e
Cats are known for their fastidious cleanliness. Nature has provided them with the
perfect grooming tool: a barbed tongue that gets rid of loose hair and dead skin cells. Cats also use their teeth to dig out tougher dirt. They moisten their front paws to groom areas that the tongue can’t reach. However, sometimes, cats will need some help with grooming. The extent to which they may need grooming assistance will vary with the type of hair coat.
The Different Types of Cat CoatsThe domestic cat will fall into one
of three categories: short, medium, or longhaired. Purebred cats range
from the almost hairless Sphynx cat to fluffy-haired breeds like the Persian. Some breeds have crimped, wiry hair, which is also known as permed.
All cat hair originates in the epidermis. Most cats have three different types of hair in their coats. The undercoat consists of soft, short, downy fur. Its purpose is to keep the cat warm.
Guard hairs are coarse, long, straight hairs found in the outer coat. These guard hairs are designed to keep the cat dry. The intermediate coat is made up of medium length hairs known as awn hairs. The part of the awn hair closest to the skin functions much like the undercoat, the part further away from the skin has the same function as the guard hairs.
HOW TO CARE FORCAT COAT TYPES
The domestic cat will fall into one of three categories: short, medium, or longhaired.

Benefits of GroomingMost cats will benefit from
regular brushing to remove dead skin cells and loose hair and to distribute the skin’s natural oils evenly along the hair coat, giving the coat a healthy shine. Grooming can also improve muscle tone by providing a mini massage. Another benefit is that it provides an opportunity for a quick physical health check, which may help detect any lumps and bumps early. Grooming can also be a wonderful way for cat groomers and owners to bond with the cats.
A Word About HairballsDaily brushing will also reduce
the amount of hair that cats may ingest during grooming, which can help prevent hairballs. Although contrary to popular belief, ingesting hair is not the primary cause for hairballs. Most hairballs are caused by compromised intestinal motility. A healthy cat with a healthy gut system should be able to eliminate hair ingested through grooming in her stool. Vomiting as a daily or even weekly method to eliminate hairballs is almost always an indicator of a more serious health problem.
Grooming ToolsDifferent types of grooming
tools will work for different types of coats. Brushes with stiff bristles or wire slicker brushes work best at removing hair from cats with short coats or sparse undercoats. Long-toothed metal combs, especially those with offset tines, work well to remove loose hair and smooth minor tangles in medium and long-haired cats. Grooming tools like the Furminator brush, which is essentially a clipper blade mounted on a brush handle, can safely remove large amounts of undercoat without cutting the skin. Grooming gloves can

work well for cats who don’t like being brushed. Th ey are designed to remove loose hair while petting the cat.
Regardless of the tool used, it’s important to always be gentle and to avoid excessive pulling.
How to Remove Tangles and MatsMinor tangles can usually be
removed with gentle brushing or combing. Mats require a different approach. Mats form when dead hairs, combined with dirt or other debris from the cat’s environment, stick together to form hard, tangled areas. Depending on the location on the cat’s body, these mats can be very uncomfortable for cats, since they will tug on the surrounding skin.
A wide-toothed comb may work for safely untangling some mats. Care should be taken to not tug too hard on the mat while working on it. Applying corn starch throughout the fur can help loosen mats, making them easier to comb out.
Never use scissors to cut a mat – it’s too easy to cut a cat’s skin when using scissors. Electric clippers can be used to gently shave off smaller mats close to the skin. Since clippers or shavers can create quite a bit of heat, they should be tested against your own skin before using on the cat, since a cat’s skin is very thin and extremely heat sensitive. In some severe cases, cats may need to be anesthetized for shaving.
To Bathe or Not to BatheMost healthy cats will not require
bathing. Older, arthritic cats may have difficulty grooming themselves and may occasionally need a bath. Veterinarians may prescribe bathing as part of a treatment plan for cats with allergies. Always remove any tangles and mats prior to getting the coat wet, as they can be impossible to remove after a bath. ✂

This Beagle gets into the family game day spirit by sporting her team colors!
She knows that showing support will get her into the treat zone real quick - and that's no foul for her. Marzipan, a nine year old beagle, gets her prime time game design at Klippers, even though she lives about 2 hours away in Prattville, Alabama - but it's worth the drive. This creative design is meant to last the season and will simply fade away as she sheds, and we all know how well beagles do that!
I chose to lighten a paw print design on the back of the dog so that I can later color it in with dyes and airbrush the finer details. We begin by first carding out all the loose coat. If your dog is not relatively clean, first bathe the dog. Then we will use a lightening crème mixed with developer; mix well in a plastic bowl.
Fig 1) Using a tint brush, apply
the mixture by brushing it onto the coat, going with the coat growth direction. With this method we are not getting the mixture all the way to the skin.
I will usually set a timer to keep track of how long the lightening mixture has been on the dog. The developer stops working after about 30 minutes and should then be washed off the dog.
Fig 2) If it is not light enough after lifting color the first time, I will do a second lift using the same products and method as described before. Make sure to shampoo well after rinsing this product from the coat.
Fig 3 & 4) This will bring the hair to a lighter yellow, making it easier to apply other colors over it. With this part now done, you can dye the lightened hair.
Fig 5) Marzipan is a Kentucky fan, so her lightened paw print was

then dyed blue and outlined with white airbrush ink to make it pop. The white was done with temporary airbrush inks for game day, which only last a few days at best.
Fig 6) And then, just to make it more fun, leopard print was painted onto the paw print using a paint brush and dyes. Oh, and notice her eyebrows? They were drawn on with paint pens.
The whole thing had shed out in about 3 months with no trace of the pattern. It was fun while it lasted. Now it's time for another design, and with the holidays just around the corner, this will be some festive beagle fun! ✂

Training for veterinary care, grooming, and handling procedures can greatly reduce
stress, and make the job easier for all involved. Target training is widely used in zoos, aquariums, and with domesticated animals of all species. Animals can learn to hold their nose to a target while having blood drawn, and during other veterinary procedures. Th is kind of training is useful across many species, large and small, including our dogs and cats. Animals can learn to willingly cooperate even for complex procedures. Targeting can be used by pet groomers to improve behavior and create positive experiences.
Th ere are many diff erent types of targeting behaviors that can be taught, for example: nose, paw, and even shoulder targeting. Th e nose target tends to be the easiest to train and can be used in a number of ways. With this

target the animal touches their nose to an object, or a person’s hand. In just one session, even animals with no training experience can usually get the concept down. Within a few more sessions, the behavior can be put on cue and cleaned up enough to make it useful for grooming purposes. An even more advanced “sustained target” can be trained where the animal holds their nose to the target for a longer period of time instead of just tapping it.
As a groomer/trainer, I use targeting on a daily basis. Targeting has been a useful tool for me across multiple species, including dogs, cats, and even rabbits. One example of how targeting helped transform the grooming experience for a dog is of a rescue dog estimated to be under two years old who had an unknown history, and was not able to tolerate any aspect of grooming.
With target training, you want to mark the instant the dog’s nose makes contact with the target and follow with
the treat reward. This particular dog would throw himself into a complete panic during grooming, and had a history of trying to bite groomers.
After being cleared by the vet, I began training him for grooming. Everything about the grooming process was a trigger, so I worked on the floor to start. It took a few minutes of play and getting to know each other before he would take
food. Once he did, I went right into the target training. He immediately took to the training, and seemed to be a different dog when he had the opportunity to earn rewards with his behavior. After a few times of hitting the target I would toss a toy and give him a break. I began lightly handling him while he touched the target. Next I put him up on the table and used the target. During each of

his appointments, which lasted less than an hour total, I was able to do some basic grooming combined with the target training. Within just a few sessions he was willing to cooperate for all of his grooming.
The first step to teaching the nose target is simple. Most dogs will naturally want to investigate the target, which can be any object you choose to use. Hold the target or place it down when the dog is watching, and when they lean in for that first sniff, mark and reward right away. Some dogs will need some more encouragement, but be patient. Once they understand the targeting game, training moves along quite quickly. It might be surprising to find out just how fast dogs pick up on targeting even without much practice between grooming appointments.
Marker-reward training is the key to success with target training.
Food rewards tend to work great for training the behavior quickly. Other types of rewards can be used as well, such as praise, toys, and play. But one of the benefits of using small bits of high value food is that the animal eats the treat and continues the training without having to take a lot of time with the reward. A marker can be a word, the click of a clicker, a whistle, or any consistent sound. The marker tells the animal exactly what they did to earn a reward. It will only be used for training purposes and it is always followed by a reward.
With target training, you want to mark the instant the dog’s nose makes contact with the target and follow with the treat reward. Without using a marker it would be difficult to communicate with the dog clearly so that they understand it is the behavior of their nose touching the target that earns

the reward, and not when they are pulling their nose away to get a treat. In the beginning every successful touch to the target earns a reward, but the rewards can be random once the behavior is learned.
As a groomer, your time is limited with each animal. You have a job to get the pets in your care groomed and sent home quickly, so how would you find the time to also train them? Would it really be worth the time and effort? A groomer’s dream dog to groom enjoys the grooming process. They are flexible and relaxed on the table. They are not fearful or stressed. They lift their paws on cue, and relax on their side for brushing. Not only are they well behaved for grooming, but they are a pleasure to have in the salon.
You might have a handful of dogs who are already like this for you, and you look forward to their
grooming appointments. But there are also dogs who barely tolerate grooming. Even very difficult dogs can be transformed with work, and when training is artfully combined with the grooming process, the time is not tacked on to the groom, but becomes a part of the process.
Some dogs won’t need much upkeep of the training at home, while others should get as much practice as possible. Many clients will appreciate the extra care and attention their pet is receiving when you tell them about the training. The target behavior has many uses outside of grooming, should they want to try it at home. For example, a nose-to-hand target (trained just like a nose-to-object target) can be used as a recall to get dogs to come when called, or it can be used in training leash walking by holding the target where the dog is expected to walk.
Targeting is also great for trick training. If your clients are interested in using targeting, provide them with a simple, one page outline of instructions, or direct them to a video on the web with examples of targeting. You don’t have to give them an entire training lesson, just enough to get them inspired to try it on their own.
My goal is that every animal I groom will enjoy a stress-free experience and that they are willing participants, and with time, they become the ideal grooming clients. Taking a training approach with grooming allows me to achieve this one animal at a time. Not every animal I work on will be trained targeting, nor does every animal need to be, but many of them do learn it. Training might mean only five minutes of the total groom is spent working on a behavior, or it

might mean an entire program is in order if the animal requires it.
If you are ready for a fun challenge, then why not give targeting a try? Start small by choosing just one or two dogs to begin experimenting with, or try it with your own dogs. Th e training is fun and fairly simple, but it takes some trial and error to be able to incorporate it into normal grooming time without falling behind. Don’t get discouraged if it takes some practice to start being able to use the targeting for grooming purposes. You can have a positive impact with target training by helping dogs build confi dence, and become great grooming dogs. ✂

G rooming Rosie (AKA The Vibrating Wonderdog) was always a challenge as she
vibrated as if she was standing on a washing machine with an unbalanced
load during the agitator cycle. Rosie suffered from a neurological disorder and I was always on guard when using any sharp tools around her.
While you cannot add “on guard”
to a pet first aid kit, you can add the following:
• Activated charcoal to absorb ingested poisons. Any item in my kit that is intended for poisoning will not be used unless directed by a veterinarian. Poisoning protocols vary and what will help in one instance can cause harm in another.
• Antibiotic cream for wounds. As I groom cats, I do not use triple antibiotic. Although rare, a cat may have an allergy to the combination of the three ingredients. If allergic, it is a fatal reaction. While unlikely, I prefer to err on the side of caution.
• Antihistamine and safety pin for minor allergic reactions. The specific ingredient is diphenhydramine in the form of a gel with a liquid center. The safety pin is used to puncture the gel cap and squirt the liquid directly onto the tongue of the pet. It is the fastest way for an anaphylactic pet to

absorb the antihistamine. Consult a veterinarian for proper dosing. Not all pets can safely use antihistamines as it may interfere with other medications and medical conditions.
• Apps for smart phones. I have two that I like. The first is Pet Poison Helpline; it will dial the number for the Pet Poison Helpline. As minutes matter in a poisoning, this is invaluable if you cannot reach a local veterinarian for instructions. The second is Pet Tech PetSaver app. The feature I love is the veterinarian locator. This is useful if you are either a mobile or house call groomer and need to find the closest
veterinarian. Neither app is free, but worth the money.
• Baking soda to absorb topical poisons or chemicals.
• Band aids for myself. This is the one item that is replenished on a regular basis.
• Bandanas are versatile. In addition to being a pretty accessory for a freshly groomed pet, it can also act as a triangular bandage or sling to take the weight off of an injured limb.
• Blood Clotters such as styptic powder, Hemastop, or dry black tea bags. Black tea contains tannic acid, which is a natural blood clotter. I do not recommend sugar, while effective,
it can cause serious medical problems in diabetic or pre-diabetic pets.
• Expired gift cards are always saved. They are a perfect size to cushion pad injuries on larger pets. I place gauze on both sides of the card and securely wrap the cards and gauze to the paw with vet wrap. In addition, the cards can flick out bee stingers. Place the card at the base of the stinger where it meets the skin and lift up and out.
• Eyewash serves double duty. It can be used to flush out both eyes and wounds. Eyewash is sterile saline solution. There are added salts that mimic the natural salt balance of cells

and eyes, which speeds healing.• Gauze comes in three varieties:
gauze roll, gauze pads, and non-stick gauze pads. The gauze roll is wider and is good for larger wounds. The non-stick gauze is more expensive and I use it as the first gauze pad on the wound. I then place the cheaper gauze on top on it. The non-stick gauze will not remove the scab when it is time to replace the bandaging.
• Honey packets for hypoglycemic pets. Stress, seizures, as well as an owner giving a pet too much insulin can result in low blood sugar. This is a serious condition that may result in the death of the pet. Signs include listlessness, staggering, tremors, muscle weakness, and seizures. Do not give the pet honey unless directed by a veterinarian.
• Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in a dog. As this is used for poisoning, consult a veterinarian first.
Dosage will vary. Vomiting is not a given for poisoning. If it is caustic, it will burn the throat on its way out. You cannot use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in cats. Cats cannot metabolize hydrogen peroxide.
• Ice or ice packs will constrict blood flow and slow bleeding. I do not keep ice in my pet first aid kit. Most people keep ice in a freezer, unless of course you are my husband (Ask me about that if you see me at a trade show).
• Liquid bandage is an asset if you know how to use it properly. Used incorrectly, it can damage surrounding tissue, as well as trap bacteria in the wound. Your veterinarian can instruct you in proper usage. I do not use superglue. It is not manufactured for medical use and as such, the manufacturer can change ingredients and formulation without consideration for safety on wounds.
• Muzzles are a must. If you
need to use your pet first aid kit, this pet is likely in pain. Any pet that is in pain is a bite risk.
• Plastic baggies to collect a vomit or fecal sample. This may be necessary if the pet has been poisoned and you are unsure of what was ingested. When not in use, the baggies can store smaller items for easy accessibility.
• Rubber gloves to protect you from any zoonotic, as well as collect vomit or fecal samples.
• Sanitary napkins will absorb blood.• Squirt bottle to deliver hydrogen
peroxide down the throat of a dog. • Vet wrap is wonderful. It
keeps the wound secure and dry. Vet wrap is also expensive. The human counterpart, flexible wrap, is the exact same thing at a fraction of the cost. Any flexible wrap will constrict with movement. Check the wrapped wound frequently.

• Wound cleanser. You have several options; the first is sterile saline solution, also known as eyewash. The second is a Chlorohexidine based cleanser, this is easy to find. Almost any store that sells first aid items carries it. The third is my personal choice, Vetericyn products.
What Not to Use: Hydrogen peroxide as it degrades surrounding tissue and cats cannot metabolize it, rubbing alcohol as it stings, or sterile, tap, or bottled water, as it disrupts the salt balance of the cells and slows healing.
Many of these items have expiration dates and should be checked periodically.
I always considered myself lucky that I never had an injury with Rosie. I wish I could say that I never had a grooming related injury; however, I’ve had my share of Fluffy zigging
while I was zagging. But always being prepared means you can attend to the injury quicker, which reduces
pain and speeds up healing. And to quote Martha Stewart; “That’s a good thing!” ✂
