EQAO GRADE 10 Literacy Results:

Literacy is a gift for life. The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (“OSSLT”) provides parents, guardians and educators with transparent information about the reading and writing skills students are expected to have acquired in all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the OSSLT is one of the 32 requirements for a high-school diploma. We are pleased to report that results from the March 2011 administration of the OSSLT indicate continued high levels of performance in our school, with 171 or 83% of our students who wrote the test for the first time passing the OSSLT. These results were higher than those observed provincially and across our school board.

Arts Department:

Drama

We've been busy in the drama studios this semester! Students have worked on enhancing communication skills, performing with masks, exploring characters, writing scripts and, of course, acting! Congratulations to all grade levels as they demonstrated a solid understanding of theatre through their Anthology, Collective and Docudrama creations. Working together, each group collaborated to produce powerful theatre pieces on issues ranging from bullying and body image to racism and the Rwandan Genocide. Thanks for your hard work everyone! Enjoy the summer, and we hope to see you in the drama studios in the fall! Photography

Students in photography enjoyed working with DSLR cameras this semester. As well, they had the opportunity to apply their skills on a trip to the Toronto Zoo. The trip was attended by everyone in the class, and the school was represented well by this group of Chargers. Many of the photos

they took were put on display during the month of June. Well done students!

Visual Arts

And so begins the summer! The art room is not open for art making at lunch during the summer!! However, to continue working with oils, clay, and yes, even watercolors, several of our students are volunteering at Visual Arts Mississauga to obtain experience and volunteer hours over the summer months. This semester saw amazing Clarkson photography win community choice and other

awards at the Capture Clarkson Photographic Exhibit, mixed media work by three of our senior students displayed at the Peel Board of

Education for Asian Heritage Month and our grade nine students participating at the Tedx youth conference held at UTM in May. The art production this semester was fast and furious, and I am surprised to say that only a few pieces of art remain in the school. If you have not picked up your work, it is located in the front hall display cabinet. Take the time this summer to fill those sketchbooks with drawings and photographs, paintings and sketches to use for inspiration in your work next year. Be safe, be creative, and I look forward to seeing you in room 126 in the fall.

Music Department:

Congratulations! What a banner year for the Music Chargers! Led by a fantastic Music Council and a terrific

group of graduating musicians, our department has seen the Grade 10's and 11's become the best they can be. Together with an amazing group of Grade 9's, the program is now stronger than ever. The Coffee House has become a premiere event in the school calendar, and there has never been a better Spring Concert. Congratulations to the Choir for its landmark victory with Bohemian Rhapsody, and hats off to the best Concert Band this school has ever seen. Get some rest this summer, Music Chargers. We're

back at it in September, and we've got some big shoes to fill!

Library:

All grade nine students will visit the library for an orientation during the month of September. During this visit, students will be asked to fill out a registration form to receive a Mississauga

Public Library card. There is no charge for this card. If your son or daughter already has a public library card, please have him or her bring it to school for verification. If your child has lost his or her library card, there will be a $2.00 processing fee to get a new one and students will be responsible for paying this fee. We are encouraging a partnership with our local public library and its amazing resources such as databases and electronic books.

Business/Technology Department:

News from the Technology Department

Mr. Petsinis and Mr. Morettin are proud to announce that this year’s graduating class includes a very special set of students who have completed the Specialist High Skills Manufacturing program offered at Clarkson. It is one of the few programs of its kind and features state-of-the-art computerized manufacturing equipment. This program can benefit students going to University (Engineering), College (technicians), Apprenticeships, or straight to the workplace. Mr. Drake and Mr. Manny’s Grade Nine students launched their self-made Dragsters for the right to claim title to Clarkson’s fastest cars. Furthermore, Mr. Manny has been busy with some excellent projects in both the Wood Shop and Auto Shop. Mr. Morettin’s class designed and built their own Roller Coasters. The results are impressive. Mr. Petsinis and his students continued to master the new CNC Milling machine and created some exciting new projects.

News from the Business Department

Mr. Lethbridge and his computer class continue to amaze with their expertise in sublimation. It is a process that allowed our students to create customized mugs, t-shirts, hoodies, and ceramic tiles. Ms. Wong’s class took Social Responsibility to a new level and provided some very interesting assemblies. Have a great summer!!

Math Department:

Congratulations to Lauren M. on being awarded the Mathematics Department’s coveted “Gold Pen” at the recent commencement ceremony. The “Gold Pen” is only awarded to students who obtain a mark over 90% in all mathematics courses (including three grade 12 mathematics courses) at Clarkson Secondary School. In addition, the top students in each of the grade 12 math courses for this academic year were also recognized at the commencement ceremony.

Top students in the grades 9-11 math courses for 2011-2012 will be recognized later at our Awards Ceremony in the new school year.

This year, a large number of our students were involved in the writing of nine different math contests. Congratulations to all of our students who wrote the Fryer, Galois, Hypatia, Euclid, Pascal, Cayley, Fermat, CHAMP and CNML contests.

Students in Mr. Kittel and Mr. Ramsay’s MCV 4U classes along with students in Mr. Camarena's MHF4U class went on a field trip to Canada’s Wonderland. Students completed an assignment that involved concepts learnt in the courses.

The teachers in the mathematics department continue to incorporate new technology into their lessons. This year, we were fortunate to obtain document cameras for all of our classes. The document camera has been used to showcase

student work. It was noted that students who shared their work via the document camera were more confident and benefitted from doing so.

Track and Field

Clarkson had a great Track and Field team this year! The fun started on April 18th with the Port Credit mini-meet at Centennial. Then there was the Marcellinus Early Bird meet on April 20th. On May 1st, Clarkson “showed their stuff” at the Campion Bears Invitational, held at Chinguacousy Park. On May 9th and 10th we attended the Marcellinus NOD meet, where many of our runners, jumpers and throwers either qualified for ROPSSAA, or experienced personal bests. Twenty-nine students represented Clarkson at ROPSSAA on May 18th and May 25th. Five students placed in the top 5 at ROPSSAA, and therefore advanced to South Regionals on May 31st and June 1st, 2012 in St. Catharines! They include Monique E. who placed fourth with a personal best of 5 metres in senior girls’ long jump. Monique also qualified for the senior girls’ 400 placing fourth with 1.01. Zack K. placed fourth in midget boys’ triple jump with a personal best of 11.06. Chris S. flew to first in the midget boys’ 200 with 23:19 and was second in the 100 with 11:91 (11:84 in the first heat). Rachel C. placed fourth in the 3000 and second in the 800 with a time of 2.33 (she missed first place by a fraction of a second). Rachel also placed second in the 1500! Stephanie N. scored a hat trick with THREE FIRSTS. She was first in the 3000 with 11:05, first in the 800 with 2:24 and first in the 1500!

At the South Regionals, Monique E. achieved a personal best with 1:03 in the 200. Rachel came 6th in the 3000, and ran the 1500. Zach K. came 7th in triple jump with a personal best of 11.38. Stephanie N. placed 3rd in the 1500, and 4th in the 3000, advancing in both events to OFSAA! Chris came in 3rd in the 200 with 24.36 and 2nd in the 100 with 11.54, sending him to OFSAA for these events!

At OFSAA in Brockville on June 7,8,9, Stephanie N. and Chris S. competed among 2000 of the province’s top athletes! Chris S. ran in the 200 preliminaries in 23:73, which was awesome. Then, he ran the 100 preliminaries in 11:36, following which he blasted to 5th place in the finals with 11:28. Stephanie ran the 3000 in 10:48, putting her in the top 19 runners in the category. She also ran in the 1500, making it in 4:54, ranking her in the top 18 in the province. Congratulations to both Stephanie N. and Chris S. on their dedication and achievement, as well as to the rest of the team who represented Clarkson with class!

Science Department:

Another semester here at Clarkson has come and gone. All our students have finished their exams and performance tasks in science, which should be a big

relief for them. We had roller coasters, catapults, enzyme investigations, environmental impact studies, titrations and dilutions, oh my! What an exciting time it is! Students are looking forward to summer and teachers are already planning for the new school year. These new students can look forward to many great things. The science room renovations have been a hit with students, in that they make for a better working environment and allow for a greater access to technology. Next school year, the science department is looking forward to having a wireless classroom to further keep our courses relevant and interesting. The science department wishes everyone well and hopes they have a great summer.

Student Services Department:

Student Services

The end of the year has been busy with graduating students receiving the news about their university and college applications. Excitement abounds as students from Clarkson leave to go to post-secondary education in the Maritimes, Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia, United States

and many schools throughout Ontario. Some of our graduates are

entering apprenticeships, going directly into the work world, taking a ‘gap’ year and travelling the world or returning to Clarkson to take more courses. We are extremely proud of all of our grads and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours. A presentation about Ontario School Assistance Program (OSAP) took place for all interested students. As well, a computer-directed lunch-hour session was provided for those students who wanted more direct supervision as they applied for student loans. We encourage all students to check with the Financial Student Aid Office at the post-secondary school they are attending for possible bursaries and grants for which they may be eligible. Included in this year’s Grade 11 student report cards is a handout for parents which provides them with important information and dates as students get ready to research programs and post-secondary options. This is a valuable resource to keep attached to the fridge, as by the second week of September, universities and colleges will be visiting Clarkson for lunch-hour information sessions. Many of our students have already signed up for new summer school courses or are retaking a course to upgrade a mark. If a student unexpectedly fails a course, he/she can go to a walk-in registration at the summer school location

that is hosting that particular class. Information about summer school can be found at www.peelsb.com (Continuing Education) for Peel District School Board locations and www.dpcdsb.org for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board. A major focus of Student Services has been Mental Health Awareness and Literacy. Over the summer months, if there is a need for counselling or support, Tangerine Walk-In Counselling is offered in Mississauga on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Information and locations about this service can be found at their website at www.tangerinewalkin.com To all Clarkson students and their families, have a safe and enjoyable summer, and we look forward to seeing you in the new school year.

Social Sciences and Family Studies

Department:

Social Sciences

Clarkson’s Social Science and Family Studies department includes a number of disciplines and areas of study; Geography, History, Law, the Social Sciences (sociology, anthropology, psychology), Philosophy and Family Studies. Teachers in the Social Sciences strive to meet two primary goals; hold the academic and university-bound student to a high standard of academic performance, while at the same time offering differentiated programming that fits the needs of college and workplace-bound student and ensure that they have an equal degree of success and preparation. As part of this two-pronged approach, every student in the academic stream will be required to write an independent research essay. The expectations increase each year, but the basic outline and expectations remain the same regardless of the course. This ensures that students in each year are well prepared for the following year’s essay. A new example of our

differentiated pathway is the HSP 3M9 course, combining grade 11 law and Introduction to Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. Traditionally both courses, because of their combined university/college expectations, do not have a high success rate for non-academic students. In response, HSP 3M9 has a more college-focused curriculum, including a number of field trips to various post-secondary institutions and unique employment locations that better meets the needs of the college-level student. The Social Sciences department is paralleling the board’s new and more open stance regarding the use of technology. Last year, we began by taking the lead on wireless access in the school and moving to ensure that every teacher in the department had a full complement of technology for use in each class. Going forward, we will continue to promote the responsible use of technology in class while supporting more traditional methods of teaching with up-to-date texts and other print resources. Quite possibly, the most significant event for some of our grads was the spring trip to the 95th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Often referred to as the battle that gave birth to a nation, the taking and holding of Vimy Ridge by a wholly-Canadian Army Corp that was lead by Canadians and planned by Canadians has a special place in the hearts and minds of Canadian History enthusiasts. Nearly 4000 Canadian students were at the event, and despite the terrible weather, it was a very moving and poignant experience. The trip itself encompassed a visit to Rome, to the Canadian Museum at Ortona, Italy, Juno Beach, Normandy, Paris and a number of other memorials and cemeteries. It was a great trip for the students and the teacher chaperones. There is hope of a future trip to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day, however, it is still too soon to tell.

Family Studies

Our students in Family Studies are engaged in a variety of activities which provide them with the

opportunity to acquire a diversity of valuable lifelong skills. In our Grade 9 and 12 Food and Nutrition courses, students are learning healthy eating habits and cooking skills in order to prepare them for independent living. This year’s Food and Nutrition students had an exciting opportunity to participate in a Peel-wide “Local Foods Competition” whereby they created and submitted recipes for implementation into Peel’s school cafeterias. One of Clarkson’s teams was selected to the finals, and two of their recipes were chosen to be included in next year’s Peel cafeteria menu. Congratulations to Katelyn P., Nadia R. and Anika G.! Our students in Grade 10 Individual and Family Living, Grade 11 Parenting, Grade 12 Human Growth and Development, as well as, Grade 12 Individuals and Families in a Diverse Society are gaining a better understanding of child development and family dynamics, and will be able to utilize these skills and knowledge in their own personal and professional lives. Grade 11 Fashion Arts students have had many opportunities for creative expression! They have gained knowledge and skills around appropriate clothing selection, as well as, practical sewing skills that will serve them well in their futures. Family Studies provide students with a wide range of opportunities for learning valuable life skills, as well as, “hands-on”, practical application of their knowledge. Ultimately, this prepares our students well for independent living as they embark on their personal and professional learning journeys.

Duke of Edinburgh:

The Duke of Edinburgh Club has seen a large number of students receive awards in the last few months. At the Silver Level, Alexander D., Allison D.,

Hannah P., and Maya T. have all achieved their Silver Level Awards. Our Club is very grateful for the leadership they have shown toward younger students who are new to the Awards Programme. Bronze Level Award recipients include Kristen M. and Olivia W. At present, a further eight award

applications are awaiting approval by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Ontario office. Congratulations to these many exceptional Clarkson students, and good luck to all those continuing to work toward their next level award over the summer. Youth Philanthropy Initiative:

On May 15th the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) assembly took place under the supervision of Ms. Tipler and Mme

Héneault. YPI is a program run by the Toronto-based Toscan-Casale Foundation in schools across Canada, the United States, and recently in the United Kingdom. Students in our Grade Ten Civics classes conducted research on local grassroots charities - not national or international charities - in the social services sector. From their research, they made presentations as to why their particular charity is worthy of support. The best presentation from each of the Civics classes faced off at the May 15th assembly. This year's winning team consisted of Martin P., Kasumi H., and Victoria P. Their impressive presentation advocating for their charity earned an award of $5,000.00 for the Vita Centre, a charity in Peel that provides a range of services to support young women who are experiencing unplanned pregnancy. In addition to earning the grant, all of this year's finalists joined students from across the province and representatives from many of the winning charities at a gala event on May 24th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre put on by the Toscan-Casale Foundation.

Me-to-We Knitters:

Under the supervision of Ms. Pedersen-Brown and Ms. Mark, a small but faithful group of students learned or honed knitting skills this semester by making and selling wristbands in Clarkson colours

to raise money for Camp Ooch. Their efforts were supported by a parent in our community, Mrs. Paula Burns, who kindly donated wool and knitted four scarves in Clarkson colours to be sold. If you are a community member who might be interested in joining in our efforts next year, please just contact one of the above-noted teachers.

Keep Track of Your Child’s Vaccinations

To attend school in Ontario, children require an up-to-date immunization record, unless you have a valid exemption. When your child receives a new vaccination, remember to contact Peel Health and provide the information. Peel Health monitors immunizations on a regular basis to ensure all children attending school have been immunized.

Make sure Peel Health has an up-to-date record of your child's immunizations by calling Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700; Caledon residents can call toll-free at 905-584-2216. Translation services are available.

The Peel District School Board’s We Welcome the World Centres located in Brampton, Malton and Mississauga, are the first point of contact for all newcomer families to become familiar with the educational system in Peel. The centre is open all year—including the summer months. In addition to providing literacy and numeracy assessments, We Welcome the World Centres provide newcomers with a host of services including: reception, orientation, interpretation and referrals.

At each centre parents/guardians and students will discover:

• computer portals—guided introduction to the Peel Welcome to School Kits and other Peel resources

• settlement service information

40 Hours to Graduate:

Students can now accumulate volunteer hours in the summer before they enter grade 9 Since 1999, all students in Ontario secondary schools are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement in order to receive a diploma. The purpose of this requirement is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various roles they can play in their community. Students are now able to start accumulating community involvement hours in the summer before they enter grade 9. Research shows that early involvement in community service helps students build a spirit of civic responsibility which can be expanded as they

move through secondary school. The aim of the 40-hour requirement is to encourage students to become actively involved in making positive contributions to their community. The community involvement component is an opportunity for students and parents to work together, independent of the school. With parent support, your teen is responsible for finding and completing 40 hours of community service. Parents should provide assistance to their teen in the selection of community involvement activities. Here’s how to get started:

Spend some time with your teen going through the list of eligible and ineligible activities in the Peel District School Board’s “40 Hours” brochure. You can obtain a copy of the brochure from your school or online at www.peelschools.org/student/timecount.htm.

View online resources at http://www.peelschools.org/student/timecount.htm

Visit www.volunteermbc.org for available volunteer opportunities

Please note that the selection of the activities should take into account the age, maturity, and ability of the student, and the location and environment of the proposed activity.

Teacher Appreciation Day: On May 8, 2012, parents held a Teacher Appreciation Day in recognition of the great work of the Clarkson staff. I would like to thank the organizing committee, Margaret Morse, Cyndi Asbil and Jayne Manktelow for putting together a fantastic event. A special thank you to Brian Hudson for securing incredibly generous donations from our local Metro store. We would also like to say thanks for everyone's generosity and participation in this year's Teacher Appreciation Day celebration. The teachers and staff of Clarkson S.S. were very appreciative and enjoyed themselves immensely. We couldn't have done it without all the parents’ donations!

QSP: During the course of the year, we received donations from parents and raised funds through our QSP magazine campaign. A big thank you to everyone who participated and helped us contribute to student life at Clarkson SS. This year, we received $1,630.00 in parent donations and $1,370.00 in QSP fundraising. With these funds, we were able to purchase BonPatron licenses in support of the Spanish and French program as well as a spotlight that will be used for all our assembly, plays and events. We have also funded the school council awards that have been handed out for several years at commencement. This year, we decided to review this process. An ad hoc committee reviewed the criteria to select recipients of these awards and following council discussion, the following criteria were defined for upcoming years. Ideal recipients would be:

attending post-secondary education demonstrating exemplary school attendance;

having academically achieved their fullest potential.

The Council agreed to fund 2 awards of $150.00 annually to assist them with their academic needs after high school. It was agreed that this funding must be derived from sources other than parent donations (QSP fundraising). The Guidance Office will take the criteria into account and select the recipients to be presented by a Council member in June at graduation. This brings me to our QSP campaign. This year was our first year running this campaign and as you can see, it was very successful. Thank you to Margaret Morse for coordinating our efforts with this project. So, don't forget to renew your favorite magazine subscription, order a new title, or give a gift this summer. QSP runs all year long. Our school receives approximately 37% of the cost of each order placed on the QSP website. Simply go online to QSP.ca and use Clarkson's group number: 8891. Funds raised are used to support important goals and programs that benefit our school and its students. Parent Donations: As for our other fundraising, parents’ donations, the school has defined their wish list for the 2012-13 school year. Take a look at the attached donation form and see whether you are able to help with any of these items. In closing, I would like to thank all the members of this year’s council for their contribution and help during the year, Brian, Sue, Guylaine and Debbie. This is a very dedicated and dynamic group who truly cares about the future of Clarkson SS. I invite you to join us next year either as a member of the council or by attending all or one of our 4 meetings to be held on September 19, 2012, November 21, 2012, January 23, 2013 and April 17, 2013.

Clarkson Secondary School - School Council

Are you looking for a way to make a positive impact in your child’s secondary school? The school council is giving parents the opportunity to help by making a monetary donation to the school. Typically there are not many fundraising activities at the secondary level so please help where you can and make a difference in your child’s school. You can direct your donations directly to the wish list item that you would like to help with. Please note that if insufficient funds are directed to a certain item, the school council may decide to re-direct where most needed to ensure the funds are used within the school year. The school has identified their top priorities for 2012-2013.

1. Towards athletic team most in need or the one of my choice: ________________________

2. Library (the library must continually purchase books and software to keep up-to-date with current curriculum)

CALL TO ACTION: Please consider helping where you can. Complete this donation form, by checking off the

appropriate option below and attaching a cheque made payable to ‘Clarkson Secondary School’. All donations of more than $25.00 will receive a tax receipt from the Peel District School Board.

CLARKSON BREAKFAST CAFÉ NEWSLETTER

June 2012

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays!!

Special thanks go to all students and staff who have contributed to making Clarkson's Breakfast Café Program a resounding success. You’re wonderful! Our gratitude is extended to our super student volunteers who have been arriving very early in the morning to prepare a delicious breakfast for our students and staff members. We extend our best wishes to Maija M., Katie C., Tori B., Kyle B., and Jonathan B. as they

graduate from Clarkson. How much they will be missed for their good work as volunteers this year! Special thanks to our returning volunteer, Bakr A. for his dedication to the breakfast program! Our Breakfast Café program appreciates the outstanding efforts of Mrs. Ament Berezowski. Her wonderful home-made pancakes have become one of the most popular item on our menu. Due in good part to Mrs. Berezowski’s efforts, our Clarkson students certainly have a good, nurturing start to their day. We would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of Clarkson’s staff members in making the Breakfast Café program a resounding success. We deeply appreciate the efforts of Mme Heneault, Ms. Johnson, Mme Loutrianakis, Ms. Luffman, Ms. Rotatore, Mr. Kittel and others for their help. Thank you! Ms. Powell, Ms. Green, Mr. Thomas and our Applewood School students have also been playing a vital role in making Room 200 a welcoming place to start the school day! Thank you! Our menu has been expanded to include delicious home-made crêpes, pancakes, grilled cheese sandwiches, fruit parfaits, chocolate milk, yogurt, fruit, and more! Students who may be unable to pay the one dollar cost, for breakfast, may meet with Ms Johnson for breakfast coupons. All Chargers wishing to earn their forty-hour volunteer community service should see Ms. Johnson in September to be trained in safe food handling, as well as to learn to prepare the best breakfast in Peel Region for our students and staff! As always, if parents or community members wish to volunteer, we welcome your assistance. By following the food handling and safety guidelines, our program participants gain best practice knowledge that may well be useful and applicable in the workplace in the future. Clarkson’s Breakfast Café continues to be a welcoming, positive place for staff and students to start the school day. Thanks go to those who participated in this year’s fundraising events. Unless you have a signed form in the past, students wishing to join the Breakfast Café (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings) need to bring a signed Permission Form (attached to this Newsletter) and $1.00 for each breakfast. We’ll be happy to see all Chargers in Room 200 at 7:20 in the morning ! Have a safe and healthy summer! See you in September in the Breakfast Café!

Dear Parent/Guardian: Clarkson Secondary School will be continuing their Breakfast Café program this year. We have added Wednesday mornings to the schedule. All students are welcome to participate. The Clarkson Breakfast Café (CBC) runs from 7:20 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in Room 200 -- menus are posted there. Students are expected to eat in Room 200 and arrive in their first period classes by 8:00 a.m. There is a small charge of one dollar ($1.00) for each breakfast.

Following Canada's Food Guide recommendations, we will offer a nutritious breakfast with a variety of items to choose from. Providing a healthy start to the school day, the breakfast program significantly enhances our students' physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development.

The Breakfast Café program is supported through the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, Clarkson Student Activity Council, Breakfast for Kids, and the Boys' and Girls' Clubs of Peel. We also welcome volunteer support, financial donations and/or or help in other ways from parents and the community. Please print your name and contact number on the Permission Form below.

If you would like your son or daughter to attend, please fill in the Confidential Registration Form below. If you are unable to contribute the cost for each breakfast at this time, please complete the Registration Form and have your child return it to Ms. Johnson in Room 218 before participating in the Breakfast Club, so that when your son/daughter does join us it will be with your permission.
