Greetings! I hope your semester is off to a great start! The fall
semester was a bit of a blur; and many of you who I’ve
talked to seem to feel the same way. But, not to fret, we’re
planning our RAC Advising conference in June...and it’s
all about MOTIVATION! How can we stay motivated and
support our team while participating in an academic
marathon? How can we assist students along the way?
Let’s connect! Our keynote speaker is lined up and we’re
seeking dynamic presentation proposals! Please consider
submitting your proposal by February 15th.
Best,
Jen Kinslow, President

WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND RAC?
Nazareth College Update from Linda Searing, Director of Academic Advising
At Nazareth, we rolled out Student Planning this fall to all students. It's part of Ellucian's self-service module and allows students to plan out their pro-
gram (they can plan courses for just the next semester or a few semesters or all remaining semesters) and then register from their plan. Advisors can
review, approve, and archive the plans. On the degree audit view, students can see what they've completed, what they're registered for currently, and
what they have planned for future terms, and what's still missing. It's been a lot of work behind the scenes; we provided a lot of training and created
"help" resources. In general, everyone loves it.
In addition, Nazareth’s “Disability Services” changed their name to “Student Accessibility Services.”
Monroe Community College Update from Sally Dingee, Assistant Director of Advisement & Transfer Services
Community colleges across the nation are realizing that for many of their students, academic advising is fragmented, with students receiving generic
support from generalist advisors, and typically only when the student seeks out the service. Monroe Community College is similar to many community
colleges across the nation in their academic advisement design. Recognizing the importance of advising and its significant contribution to retention
and persistence, MCC is currently undergoing an advising redesign that aligns with the College’s guided pathways model. The method of guided path-
ways moves community colleges from a model that promotes access to enrollment to one the supports access to completion. Led by Sally Dingee
from Student Services and Jessica Wilkie from Academic Services, the strategy involves a holistic student onboarding process focused on education-
al, career and financial planning, assigning faculty caseloads so students can receive ongoing sustained support, the use of analytics to curate out-
reach and targeted interventions, personalized messages to students that provide them with information they specifically need when they need it as
well as address areas of learning, shared advising notes, and use of an early alert system. Through this redesign students will create the relation-
ships and commitment needed to success in college.
Rochester Institute of Technology Update from Lynne Mazadoorian, Director, University Advising Office
RIT’s academic advising program continues to refine processes that encourage and support timely graduation. One example is our non-registered
student outreach process. Academic advisors outreach to students who have not yet registered for the upcoming term to check in and offer assis-
tance. This university-coordinated campaign offers students additional support, including connections to resources that may be helpful for their unique
situations. Advisors log outreach in SIS, which then allows us to provide updates on student progress at both the college and university level. Addi-
tionally, our advising community has partnered closely with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships & the Office of the Registrar to build new tools
and processes around federal financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements.
SUNY Geneseo Update from Dr. Celia Easton, Dean of Academic Planning and Advising, Professor of English
In late 2016, Geneseo underwent a reorganization of the Dean’s office, splitting off academic planning and advising from curriculum, scheduling, and
assessment. The new “Academic Planning and Advising” office (DAPA) remains small — Geneseo is still following a faculty advising model — but it is
now focused on direct support for students. The DAPA office works with students in academic difficulty, celebrates with students who earn Dean’s List
and President’s List honors, and coordinates with the office of New Student Programs for registration and student success. We hope to bring in a
NACADA consultant during spring 2018 to help the office clarify its mission in coordination with our new (since July 2017) Provost, Stacey Robert-
son. We are also interested in creating clearer pathways for students transferring to Geneseo, especially from MCC and GCC.
