Introduction

• Some people hear about things, other experience it.

• So it is important to look beyond the surface truth, and look for the deeper meanings.

• The purpose of this PowerPoint is to teach you all about architecture and what it is. We also need to teach you without the ancient Greek contributions how our common life would be.

What is architecture?

• Architecture is when people construct buildings and other monuments.

• In ancient Greece they constructed on temples and in our days we also build monuments for important people using some of the same carvings on pillars designed by ancient Greeks.

Influence• Architecture is very important to ancient Greeks. It

is more than just building a couple buildings to them.

• Architecture shows their religion and culture.• Many people show within themselves through

constructing sculptures.• It shows who they worshiped and how they

worshiped them.• The Greeks weren't the only ones that used

Architecture but we also use it. And if they didn’t invent this then we wouldn’t have it today. It will depend on us to figure it out eventually.

How would Ancient Greece be without Architecture?

• If architecture didn’t exist then neither would the Greeks religion.

• Architecture was the main way that ancient Greeks expressed their religion and showed their feelings towards the gods.

• Architecture was not only used for religious reasons, it was also used to build, homes, theaters, schools and shops, and much more.

• The Greeks can’t live without it

Contribution to modern society• We still use ancient Greek ways of buildings

since they are very good and their buildings are still up and strong even if they were built thousands of years ago.

• In the white house we still use the same pillars used in the temple of Athena.

• There are three types of pillar designed by Phidias.

1) Doric: Most basic no base or design.2) Ionic: Nice design has a base used mostly for

homes3) Corinthian: Most design and used for temples.

Who is the best sculpturer?• “Architecture” is the Greek word for “master

builder”.• The best sculpturer was Phidias.• Phidias was always the one designing and building

the temples.• Phidias was unquestionably the best sculpturer but

the two closest people to him were Ictinus and Callicrutes.

• These two people were inspired by Phidias and loved his work.

• Ictinus once said “Phidias was like the god off building”.

Parthenon 1/2• The Parthenon is one of the most

honored temples in Ancient Greece.• It was built in Athens on the Acropolis

honoring Athena on her birthday. • An Acropolis is the highest hill in a

place. • And the reason they stated on the

Acropolis is because they wanted to be as close to the gods as possible.

Temples• Temples are a good example of architecture.• All the ceremonies for the gods were outside not

inside the temple.• The temples are made of white marbles.• The temples are made of the best materials available

and the nicest designs.• The pillars were made of corinthian pillars and the

floor was shiny white marble. • The people worked day and night because these

temples were maid to pray for the gods and goddesses.

Conclusion

• Now you have learned all about Architecture. And what the Ancient Greeks would be without Architecture. It would be a disaster. And they would not be a city-state that is well based. Because basically the main thing that holds a well-based city-state together is religion and culture.
