This Friday, on “Walk Safely to
School Day” we are asking our
children to walk to school wearing
their brightly coloured socks and
joggers. School uniform as usual.
(No money involved)
What a success! We had so much fun and raised a lot of money for our school. The Grafton Public School P & C
Colour Run has been finalised with a grand total of $12,837.55 raised. This money will be directly used for more
resources in your child’s classroom. A HUGE thankyou to students, parents, families and friends for supporting the
event.
Congratulations to a very excited Kalobe Bateman from 2-6LJ (pictured below) who has won a new bike for being
the highest fundraiser across the entire school. Charlie Cutts from 5KR was the lucky winner of the IPOD Shuffle
when his name was drawn from the box containing names of all children who participated. 1SM and 4/5SL were the
winners of the highest fundraising class and earned themselves a pizza party for lunch. 4JD and KP were runners-
up and will enjoy yummy recess treats of cake and donuts. 5/6KG has won an icecream party one afternoon for
being the class with the most participants to return sponsorship.
Congratulations to our many, many, incentive prize winners who loved their vouchers and gifts, and also our grade
winners (some pictured below) who each have each won a Big W voucher: Kinder – Logan Mawson KP, Year 1 –
Nathanial Lasker 1SM, Year 2 – Jesse Brown 2/3GT, Year 3 – Jordan Durrington 3NC, Year 4 – Anicka Peters

The P & C are sincerely grateful to all concerned and have asked us to pass in their appreciation:
This event wouldn’t have been possible without the support from the school community. A big thank you to the
volunteers on the day, all the spectators that came along to cheer on the students, Gary Reardon from the Grafton
Fire Brigade for supplying us with water and the office staff for collecting and counting the money each and every

Awards
As you would have read in recent newsletters, we have upgraded our awards system to a new computer program. Not
only will this make it easier for teachers to acknowledge students efforts, it allows us to offer more awards as totals
can accumulate electronically throughout a student's infants/primary school years (hence our new bronze/silver/gold
and platinum awards).
We are seeking your help in trying to update the new program as much as we can. If your child has any "old" awards
(dated 2013/2014/2015) which are NOT STAMPED ON THE BACK as being previously used towards a DP Award,
please send them in to the office either in an envelope or grouped together, so we can bring your child's records up to
date on the new award system.
We will progressively make our way through inputting the "old" cards and then return them to you. Once we have input
all of these "old" cards, the computer program will automatically advise when a student is eligible for an award.
We will no doubt have a few teething problems at the start of the new awards process so we appreciate your patience
and understanding; however, it is very exciting as we know we already have two students who have qualified for the
new Bronze Award and they will receive a bronze badge at the award ceremony next week and they look FABULOUS!!

Library News
Dear Parents and Carers,
We had a well-attended, 18 people, P & C meeting last Tuesday evening in our library, with many topics being
canvassed and discussed. These included varying the times of the meeting to allow parents of toddlers to attend
during the day or straight after school. The P & C will survey the parent body soon in relation to the timing of the
meetings. Other topics included the canteen’s steady and positive growth with the option of surveying the parent
body regarding meal options and meal deals. Again, this will be forthcoming in the near future. The other main item
included the discussion regarding the school uniform and its pricing. The executive are reviewing the supplier
contracts with regard to this and will report back at the next meeting. I also briefly discussed the NAPLAN tests.
Currently we are reviewing our school’s performance against the state’s School Excellence Framework (SEF). The
SEF states that, ‘in the early years, it means having confidence that each child will be known and understood, and their individual potential developed’. As students progress, it means knowing that they are well supported as
increasingly self-motivated learners – confident and creative individuals, with the personal resources for future
success and wellbeing.’ In this review we had three domains to judge progress within, these being: “Excelling in
Learning; Excelling in Teaching; and Excelling in Leading.” Within teaching and learning there were five elements
and within the leadership there were four elements.
We were required to make a judgment against three standards – Delivering; Sustaining and Growing; and Excelling.
One has to be objective in making these assessments as evidence and data are necessary in making the judgment,
along with interpreting the language of each elements descriptors. The final judgments is recorded against your
weakest link point, irrespective of the peripheral blurring effect as the real vision reveals many descriptors above
the level being met, yet, you can only mark against your weakest link given the descriptors language. In all five of
the Learning domain’s elements we judged ourselves to be ‘delivering’ with many descriptors in the ‘sustaining and
growing’ also being met. In the Teaching domain, we were delivering in three and ‘sustaining and growing’ in two. In
the Leading domain, we were delivering in two elements and ‘sustaining and growing’ in the other two.
Where to from here? We are now matching our results against our school’s yearly development plan and ensuring
that our ‘milestones’, a revised term for targets, are being met. We are doing this with discrete teams trying to
avoid the removal of teachers from classes whilst staying within the budgets appropriated to schools for teaching
and learning.
Overall – we are doing well, and delivering some very positive outcomes – well above expectation. One example being
our NAPALN growth from Year 3 to Year 5 for students – we have aggregated over the past three years above the
state growth giving us an ‘excelling’ marker in this learning descriptor. We are quite happy with this.
During this week, eight of our Stage 3 Aboriginal students have been selected to join Ms Deborah Cheetham,
Opera Australia lead singer, to participate in the ‘Short Black Opera’ productions between 9 am and midday at the
Clarence Valley Conservatorium. Ms Cheetham was here two years ago and I know she demands a very high standard
with the students – and attains it! It is a very rewarding and positive experience – a great opportunity. Mrs
Robertson and I will be transporting the students to and from the rehearsals.
Here at school we have our BOOK FAIR. What is the world without printed text???? It provides for communication
allowing both writer and reader to interpret and create. I had a preview of the offerings – something for everyone.
I do hope you can find time to make it. My sincere thanks to Mrs Avery for co-ordinating this as well as keeping the
doors open through to 5 or 6 in the evening.
Last week we raised money to assist Will Wallace who heads to Darwin shortly, representing NSW in swimming at
the National titles. These are costly exercises for families who support their children in their growth and
development.
On Friday, we “WALK TO SCHOOL” in our colourful socks and joggers – helping us to keep fit and healthy.
Have a great week,
Will Randall

* We are seeking the assistance of parents to help us out in the mornings at the Infants Campus. As it is now Term 2,
we are trying to build up independence in our littlies and morning classroom routines are changing slightly to reflect
this and help build this necessary life skill. We are asking parents to please consider “kiss and drop” mornings. Walk
your child to the gate like you usually do, give them a kiss and wave goodbye. Encourage them to put their schoolbag
away and then go to play in the playground with their friends. Although the first couple of mornings may be hard, your
child’s self confidence will grow and blossom.
