This semester, the Center for Graduate Studies kicked off a Graduate Student Ambassador program. The Graduate Student Ambassadors will work to provide a peer perspecve in all recruitment and outreach iniaves pertaining to graduate student enrollment. Over the last week, we have interviewed and selected 10 students to serve as Graduate Student Ambassadors for the 2014-15 academic year. Career Planning is Here to Help! Career Planning offers many programs to help students prepare for life during and after college.

This semester, Career Planning is currently holding dates for career/major explorations, resume building, and

job search workshops. Workshops will be held in 206 Sisson Hall. Make sure to register for the workshops at

Meet Our Graduate Assistant Juliana Brush! Juliana Brush is in the first semester of her first year of the literacy specialist program. She

wants to be a reading teacher for children between pre-k and sixth grade who struggle with

reading because she has always loved to read and her passion for reading has only grown since

childhood. When it came time for her to choose schools, she knew that reading was for her.

After finishing up, Juliana hopes to find a job in a school; she doesn’t care if it’s in a classroom

or if it is a literacy specialist, she just wants to work in a school and will sub as much as possible

to get more exposure to the environment.

Juliana works in the Sheard Literacy Center as a Graduate Assistant. She spends her time working closely

with the mentoring program in which three local schools send children from pre-k through eighth grade to the

Potsdam campus Mondays through Thursdays for the undergrad childhood/early childhood education majors to

mentor. Juliana helps make sure the children get off the bus safely, teaches the mentors about how to be mentors,

and, preps them for blocks and student teaching. She also helps expose the undergrad students to the edTPA format

so that they can have practice making detailed objectives, work on classroom management, and practice positive

reinforcement. This position helps Juliana develop her skills as a leader and enhances her ability as an educator, and

she loves being in the Literacy Center.

Wanting to be close to home, Juliana chose Potsdam even though she was torn between Potsdam and

Clarkson at first. When she came to visit the Potsdam campus, she had that feeling of it being the right choice for

her. Juliana was a very shy person when she first came to college, but thanks to the caring and amazing professors,

she was able to be more open to asking questions and making friends. This open and friendly environment is her

favorite thing about Potsdam. She believes that the professors and students really care about each other and try to

help each other here.

Juliana hopes that students will look into internships and other opportunities while they are at college. She

also recommends being as prepared as you can for everything.

“Know as much as you can, have really good time management skills, and get as much as you can out of the

discussions in small classes. It’s really nice when you can do that,” Juliana said.

She also wants students to recognize the vitality of varying programs, especially in the field of education.

With the changing common core standards, she thinks it’s really important to help students out in any way possible,

and she is going to do so by developing a love for reading at an early age.

Alumni Spotlight Opportunity

SUNY Potsdam alumni are employed in positions across the United States and even around the world. Each month, alumni will be featured on the Center for School Partnerships’s bulletin board on the first floor of Satterlee to share their achievements and advice. In order for us to feature our alumni, we need to gather some information. Meet Our GAP Beth Anne Sanford! Beth Anne Sanford is a first semester graduate student working on her MA in special

education. She is a Potsdam alumni with a degree in childhood/early childhood

education. Beth Anne hopes to continue on to become a full time teacher in Canton

for a bit, but is also willing to explore other options outside of the North Country.

She would love to go into special education but will take whatever teaching job she

can find.

Beth Anne participates in the Graduate Advantage Program here at Potsdam, and

can be found in the Academic Support Services office in Sisson Hall. Beth Anne heard

about the program from Tim Morse, her boss. She was a tutor during her undergrad

years, and Tim suggested that she apply. While on duty, Beth Anne works with the

group tutoring program. She explained that Tim interviews the groups and assigns tutors to the groups, then

Beth Anne makes sure that everyone knows what group they are in and who their tutor is. She also has the

opportunity to sit in on Tim Morse’s class as a TA if she wants to.

Because she wanted to stay active on campus and needed a little help covering the cost of grad school,

Beth Anne became a GAP. She also mentioned that participating in this program helps her balance the perfect

amount of time on campus helping people and at home with family.

Originally a transfer student, Beth Anne came to Potsdam because she knew she wanted to go into

special education but didn’t know where else to go for the program. She knew two friends who came to

Potsdam for the same program and decided to follow them. She has grown to love Potsdam though. She loves

the summers here in the town, but on campus, appreciates the amazing professors. She never connected with

her professors at her community college the same way she connects with her professors here, and she really

appreciates that. She also loves the various opportunities that Potsdam provides for students.

“Students should take advantage of as many opportunities as they can,” Beth Anne said. “I feel like a

lot of people think it’s expensive to study/travel abroad, and it is, but it’s so worth it.”

Beth Anne traveled to Australia in her undergrad and believes that Potsdam offers so many

opportunities for students, and people should go out and do something for the community rather than sit in

their dorms.

College Writing Center Welcomes Graduate Assistant The College Writing Center is fortunate to have hired English and Communication graduate student Bethany Fobare as a Graduate Assistant!

Bethany is working as the Assistant Director of the College Writing Center. She supervises and mentors tutors, provides tutoring, and leads workshops. This fall, Bethany has already led more than 15 workshops, mostly orientations to the CWC services for FYSS classes. She works closely with the CWC director, Dr. Jennifer Mitchell, to solve problems and improve our procedures for both staff and clients. Bethany worked in the Potsdam CWC as an undergraduate and studied journalism in Colorado before returning to Potsdam.

The CWC also congratulates Brenton Johnson, who was our past Assistant Director/ GA. Brenton com-pleted his master's in English and Communication and is teaching and tutoring at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake.

The New York State Reading Association conference will be in Liverpool, NY (near Syracuse) on November 9-11. This year, the conference will host many people from authors to graduate students to college professors who will speak at over 100 sessions that pertain to literacy in the disciplines. Because the conference is being held near Syracuse, students might be able to make a day trip if they are worried about costs. If you would like to register, or would like more information, visit http://www.nysreading.org/Conference/2014. Don’t wait!

If you are a full-time student in college then you can join the NYSRA free of charge. You just need to send a letter from your college advisor stating that you are a full-time college student along with your membership registration form. The usual registration fee for students is $5. *Note- You will still need to pay $15 for your local council fee.

What does the North Country Council of the International Reading Association do?

(1) Encourages the study of literacy at all educational levels (2) Stimulates and promote research in literacy (3) Publishes the results of pertinent and significant investigations and practices

(4) Assists in the development of teach-education programs (5) Disseminates information relating to literacy (6) Promotes mutual understanding and cooperation among teachers, administrators, parents, and others in preschool programs, elementary grades, junior high, high school, special areas, and college (7) Sponsors conferences and meetings related to literacy

By joining, members will be able to network with others at the local and state level, learn the best practices to use with children in literacy, learn what is going on at the State and Federal Level, develop professional connections to Lit-eracy Gurus, develop leadership skills, have the opportunity to attend conferences and workshops, become advocates for literacy, meet many authors (well-known and not so well-known), have the opportunity to win grants and awards, and can be published in journals and other forms of publication.
