The periodic table is a system for organizing all the known chemical elements. An element’s position depends on how many protons are in its nucleus (its atomic number) and its chemical properties.

*Standard atomic weights are official values provided by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Atomic weight is the relative average mass of the atoms of a particular element in a substance. Atomic weights can vary in elements having two or more atoms with different atomic masses. If an element’s atoms are radioactive, an atomic mass of one of its atoms is listed in parentheses.
