The Morristown High School ShowGram has been recognized for its professional quality and graphic design; most recently having been nominated by the Paper Mill Playhouse’s Rising Star Awards in the Spring of 2010. This recognition is a testament to the myriad hours of work put in by students the MHS ShowGram.

The students you see on stage and behind the scenes are the same students who, early in the season, began working mornings and late afternoons, spending countless hours rearranging ads, typing up bios, checking and double-checking information; ultimately creating the program you now hold in your hands. Being involved in the design process of this ShowGram has proven the dedication, teamwork, and creative ingenuity of the Theatre students at Morristown High School. We hope that our efforts produce a memorable ShowGram for parents, students, actors and our wonderful audience members.

With that being said, we all wish to thank each of the the MHS Theatre members involved in the program’s creation. From all of the ShowGram crew, please enjoy the show!

Special Note: The ShowGram has Gone Green!

Since Barnum in the spring of 2010, the ShowGram Team has been committed to making green decisions concerning the responsible production of the ShowGram. Some of these decisions include using local printers to reduce fuel costs while shipping, decreasing the overall number of pages, and producing less waste. We feel our greatest impact is achieved by

collecting and reusing the unwanted ShowGrams at the end of each performance. So, please excuse us if you received a less-than-new ShowGram. We would appreciate it if you recycle your ShowGram on your way out the door after the show; baskets will be available. Thank you again for your continued support in all of the MHS Theatre’s accomplishments!

When Joe announced that the spring musical this year would be Good News!, my first reaction was one mostly of surprise, and partially of confusion, because to be honest, I had never heard of it before. I was a bit apprehensive about putting on a show that our audience may not be familiar with, and these fears deepened further when I learned that we would be joined by a new choreographer. However, I trusted Joe’s judgment, and continued on with high hopes. As soon as I read the script and listened to the score, I knew exactly why it had been chosen for our spring production: the songs were catchy, the lines were witty, and the overall message of the story was meaningful and relevant to our current atmosphere. I knew immediately that this would be an amazing show, and this belief was reinforced by our incredible cast.

During the first rehearsal, the cast learned the choreography for the title number, “Good News.” As soon as the practice began, any anxiety over the movements disappeared. Our new choreographer, April, proved her abilities and talent with her fabulous dance steps, and the show started to look amazing. As we continued, the production only got better, and although we faced some scheduling problems with the weather, everything went smoothly. As the performances approached, my excitement grew until I could hardly stand waiting any longer. Finally, the time has arrived and I can proudly present our stupendous production of Good News!

Director’s Note

Musical theatre can serve many purposes; it can inform, entertain, enlighten, and inspire. However, with our production of Good News! we strived for one goal: happiness. In light of all the struggles we are facing nationally and globally, I think we could all use a little good news. Listening to a familiar show tune can bring joy, and Good News! is chock-full of gleeful standards. I must admit that with all of our canceled rehearsals due to this winter’s weekly snowstorms, I was grappling to find my inner “happy musical theatre” place. But on the nights we could rehearse, I would hear “Button Up Your Overcoat” or “You’re the Cream in my Coffee” sung by our multi-talented cast members, and all would be right in the world.

When I told people what our spring musical was going to be this year, the typical response was “never heard of it,” or “I don’t know that one.” I assured them that they may not know the show, but they will recognize many of the musical numbers. After I sang a few bars of “The Best Things in Life are Free” and “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries,” I proceeded with a brief history of the musical. Good News! opened on Broadway in 1927, and was a smash hit. Compared to Show Boat, which opened on Broadway that same year, Good News! had an old-fashioned and delightfully predictable plot. A 1974 revival of Good News! flopped on Broadway, closing after only 16 performances. A reworked and revamped version enjoyed a successful run at the Music Theatre of Wichita in 1993, and this is the version you will see tonight.

I love directing musicals that are rarely produced, but in an era where musicals are confronting issues such as nervous breakdowns and bipolar disorder, I was a little leery that the students would find the material in Good News! corny and outdated. To my pleasant surprise, the students embraced this musical and committed one

hundred percent to the project. Watching the joy on their faces as they pieced together the songs with the choreography reminded me why I love musical theatre.

This is my third year directing the spring musical at MHS, and each year it gets harder and harder to say goodbye to the graduating seniors. To all the senior thespians, it has been an honor working with you, and you will be greatly missed. I wish you all a lifetime full of success and good news. I will also miss terribly the graduating TPA moms who have worked tirelessly over the past few years to ensure that our theatre program thrives. I know you stand in the wings as your children receive all the applause, but it is my turn to applaud you. My deepest gratitude also goes out to Ms. Linda Murphy and Mr. Mike Bruchac for their continued support; the entire thespian community is truly fortunate to perform under your leadership.

quotes is, “There is not much of a difference between a stadium full of cheering fans and an angry crowd screaming abuse at you. They’re both just making a lot of noise. How you take it is up to you. Convince yourself they’re cheering for you, you do that and some day, they will.” - Sue Sylvester.

Rebekah Lee (Percussion) - ’12 Rebekah’s goals in life are to travel the world, seeing and learning about different cultures, to continue to pursue her passions in the Arts, and to live happily and always have faith. Her past MHS productions include Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Barnum. After high school, Rebekah plans to go to college for the Arts or Biomedical Science and seek a career she will enjoy every day. Rebekah’s role models include Kellin and Wesley. She would like to thank her parents for supporting every decision she makes, Kassandra for being one of her best friends and always giving her something to laugh about, Veronica An, Dan, Mike, Shelly, Alexis, all of her friends, and, of course, Laura James, her best and longest friend. Rebekah’s favorite quote is, “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.” - William Ernest Henley.

John Nally (Percussion) - ’11 Previously, John accompanied Conductor Skip Yingling in a jazz duo for the MHS production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. He is happy that he has finally found the time to be a part of the musical portion of MHS Theatre. John plans on graduating this June and intends to enroll in a four-year university, where he will become a certified Elementary or Special Education teacher.

Charlotte Rodgers (Cello) - ’13 After high school, Charlotte plans to attend college, do something involving music, and live a happy life. Although she has not participated in any MHS theatre productions, her past productions include High School Musical, Beauty and the Beast, and Peter Pan. She has also attended a theatre camp at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. Charlotte’s role model is her mother, who works so hard to give her and her siblings a happy life. She would also like to thank her mother for encouraging her to take up the cello, and her brother for always being there for her. Charlotte’s favorite quote is, “The grass is not, in fact, always greener on the other side of the fence. Fences have nothing to do with it. The grass is greenest where it is

watered. When crossing over fences, carry water with you and tend the grass wherever you may be.” - Robert Fulghum.

Becky Sheldon (Flute) - ’13 Becky is enjoying her first experience as a member of the theater. Her post-high school plans include finding a college she enjoys, and her goals in life include majoring in an aspect of music when she enters college. She would like to thank her parents, private lesson teachers, and school teachers for helping her get to where she is. Becky’s role models are her parents, who are always such hard workers and never give up. Her favorite quote is, “Music is a moral law. It gives wings to the mind, a soul to the universe, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and a life to everything.” - Plato.

Lauren Stark (Flute) - ’14 Lauren’s goals in life include going to college, getting a good job, and starting a family. Though this is her MHS Theatre debut, she has performed in the Frelinghuysen Middle School productions of Beauty and the Beast and Peter Pan and was part of crew for Back to the Eighties. After high school, Lauren plans on going to college. Her role model is her mom, who is always there for her. She would like to thank Miss Becky Sheldon for encouraging her to join Pit and for being awesome. Her favorite quote is, “Je ne sais pas.”

Annabel Walter (Trumpet) - ’13 Annabel’s goals in life are to do work and to have fun. This is her first production in the MHS Theatre, but this year she is also playing in the Pit Orchestra for The Sound of Music at Frelinghuysen Middle School. Annabel wants to thank everyone for everything. Her favorite quote is, “When you judge others, you do not define them, you define yourself.” - Earl Nightingale.
