AS I WATCHED MYSON play in his firstprofessional football

game as a Philadelphia Eagle,I thought to myself what anamazing time for me to bealive, healthy and fortunateenough to live to see my sonlive his dreams. When I thinkof the joy he has brought ourfamily and the pulling togetherhis activities has brought to us,I can’t help but smile.

Then, I think of our fami-ly trips, when he was growing

up and we couldn’t afford tocall our family trips a vacation. It was just a trip back home -to Memphis, Tenn and St.Louis, Mo. Now that my sonhas grown up and is living onhis own (well kind of) my hus-band and I find more reasonsto take trips. I sure wish myson could join us on many ofour excursions, and discovermore of the wonderful thingsour world has to offer. I trulybelieve that there is such con-stant wonderment and happi-ness associated with globaltravel and if we don’t seize theopportunity to see the worldnow, the world and all its

beauty mighty just pass us by. I look forward to each and

every trip I take, and I love theidea of discovering new peo-ple, places and adventures. Ireally enjoy my moments, myspace and my times on theroad - alone and while with myhusband.

This past year I havetaken trips domestic andabroad and every travel expe-rience has been special to me.There have been beautifulmoments shared with the envi-ronment and I have metstrangers that I now refer to asfriends. I have made an effortto enjoy and understand howreally lucky I am to have a joblike this.

In this small yet powerfulautomotive magazine wedesire to help you understandthat the fine line betweendreams and reality has justbeen erased.

The beauty of Travel &Auto is that it can inspire, reju-venate, educate and stimulatewhatever reality you’d like toexperience. It can take youplaces that you desire to visitor it can help inspire your verynext daydream. I hope you andyour loved ones appreciate themagic of the automobiles, anddestinations featured in thisfall edition of Travel & Autoand I hope you will also takethe time to enjoy everymoment of your very owndrive time experiences.

by Ella Patterson

The AMV8 Vantage will be hand-assem-bled at Aston Martin's new state-of-the-art production facility at Gaydon.

The name Vantage - which will also beadopted for the production version - was cho-sen due its long historic links with AstonMartin. This time it is a specific model namerather than denoting a high performance ver-sion.

The AMV8 Vantage is a tailored two-seater sports car that retains a front mid-engine/rear-wheel drive layout. Henrik Fisker,

Aston Martin's Design Director, key objectivewas to produce a thoroughly modern AstonMartin. Another aim was to ensure that theinterior layout and equipment were unique toAston Martin and could be easily carried overinto the production car.

There are also a number of traditionalAston Martin design cues which have beenincorporated into the AMV8 Vantage's stylingsuch as the front grille shape and the typicalside strakes found on all Aston Martin models.

Driving a different car every weekgives plenty of opportunity forforming opinions about various

models. It also makes fluid my list offavorites. My opinion isn't always basedon experience, though. Based purely onvisual stimulation I decided that I love theMini Cooper! I still crane my neck toextend the moments I can enjoy staring atthis very appealing vehicle. It is very car-toon or toy-like--I can easily imagine aMini Cooper with a giant wind-up keysticking out the side. But looks truly canbe deceiving, and the Mini Cooper is areal car.

The chance to drive a Mini Cooper fora week was obviously thrilling for me.There was no wrestling match or argu-ment over the keys. One look and myhusband backed off with his hands up indefeat. It was an unspoken "Step awayfrom the Mini and nobody gets hurt"look--effective if not over used.

Our test model happened to be a con-

vertible. It also happened to be a timewhen I had company at my house: mysister from California and my best friendform Virginia Beach. We spanned thecountry, a good range of opinions bywhich to judge the Mini. I drove themaround our rural area, past pastures ofgrazing livestock and curving throughwooded areas along creek bottoms. Thistrio of ladies would have enjoyed oneanother's company regardless of the activ-ity, but the Mini Cooper with the convert-ible top down received high praise fromall and enhanced our time together with avery enjoyable memory. The car handleseasily, rides comfortably, and performswith energy. Very small to look at, it seatsfour with a trunk that could handle theirovernight bags. It is not designed for car-rying a family and their luggage on anextended vacation! Larger objects can bestored with the top up and the rear seat-backs folded forward.

The standard engine in the Mini

Cooper is a 1.6-liter 115-horsepower witha manual 5-speed transmission. Asdiminuative as it looks, the Mini has asolid feel and sturdy dependability. Aslight-hearted as the design appears, it is aquality vehicle inside and out. Safety isguarded by crush zones, side airbags, rollbars, electronic stability programmingand reinforced doors. Other standardequipment includes 15-inch wheels, tiltsteering column, micron-filtered air con-ditioning, six-speaker stereo with CDplayer, power windows and mirrors, andfour-wheel anti-lock disc brakes withBrakeforce Distribution and CorneringBrake Control. I didn't feel exposed or

unprotected, or even threatened by largertraffic on the road. Once again, this is areal car--well equipped and very capable!

So what are you waiting for? TheMSRP for the basic Mini Cooper is$21,500, and that is only the beginning ofthe economy! Fuel ecomony is estimatedat 25 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. Weaveraged over 28 mpg driving a combina-tion of roadways. In addition, the MiniCooper is proving to be very desirable, making it retain it's value. A great invest-ment--entertaining, practical, useful, eco-nomical, and something to be proud of.You might see me craning my neck tostare at your car!

When I test drove the 2005 Forenzamodels I was very impressed withthe handling of the vehicles. I felt

very comfortable and safe while driving theForenza Sedan and the Wagon. Forenza han-dled curves, eased into stop and go traffic andavoided a near from an 18 wheeler who wastalking on the phone. I was also able to park intight areas with assurance. I like this one!

Featured is an advanced weight-sensingfront passenger airbag. Front seat-mountedside airbags for protection. Front and rearcrumple zones work with robust high-tensilesteel cabin structural features and front andrear side-impact door beams to reduce theimpact forces that passengers might be sub-jected to and to help minimize intrusion intothe interior. Height-adjustable front shoulderbelts and seatbelt pretensioners help provideoptimal belt positioning and automaticallytake slack out of the front seatbelts the instantafter a collision. Three-point seatbelts in theback seat and the LATCH child seat systemprovide additional layers of security.

UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDSBeautiful Weather Is Only One Reason To Visit

by Ella Patterson

The United States Virgin Islandsis home to some of the best shop-ping in the world. There are many

reasons to visit the USVI and beautifulweather is only one of them.

Day 1: I flew from Dallas/Ft. Worth to St.Thomas. From the airport I was driven toBlackbeard’s Castle. Here, I met our hostand as I looked around the immediateperimeter of the hotel I noticed a uniquelight house, a Blackbeard statue and abeautiful view of the island. Dinner was atAmelia Café, and offered the taste ofSpain in the Caribbean. The OwnerRandolph Maynard made sure I got totaste my favorites. I ate lobster, mussels, shrimp, and tried the chocolate moussefor desert.

Day 2: A light breakfast was served fea-turing cantaloupe, bagels, oranges, coffeeand a variety of Earl Gray teas. Afterbreakfast I headed to the Ferry to travel toSt. John for the day. My day was filledwith many activities: I started at theDonald Schnell Studio where the legendof Saint John began with the "The MagicStone." I was told that if I touched the

magic stone I would never be far from thehealing power of the islands. Next, I head-ed to glass blowing and clay demonstra-tions on Maho Bay. Here the guest learnto transform "trash into treasures" as allkinds of empty bottles become beautifulgift items. Aluminum cans are moldedinto decorative and useful objects thatleave the island as art instead of waste. From Maho Bay I had lunch at Sogo's.Sogo’s felt more like home because itserved big juicy burgers. From Sogo’s Iheaded to Kareso Gallery, My host wasartist Avelino Samuel who displayed hisbeautiful wooden works of art. Next, Itook the ferry to St Thomas. It was apeaceful, but crowded ride. Islanders getfrom one island to the next this way. Oncethe ferry docked I headed for Zora'sSandal Shop. Here I found custom madesandals that are fit to order. I left Zora’sand shopped for a while before headingback to the hotel to prepare for dinner.Dinner was served at the Old StoneFarmhouse. It was an elegant, eveningfilled with creative cuisine and sushi. It issituated in a 200 year old, restored planta-tion field house that overlooks theMahogany Run Golf Course. Once this

300 acre plantation stretched fromMagen's Bay to Mandahl.

Day 3: The tour began at Tillett Gardensand Screen Painting with host RhodaTillett, and Albert (Sonny) Thomas. Theygave me an opportunity to make a silkscreened T-Shirt. After making my T-shirtI headed to Island Fragrance, hosted byGail Garrison. She’s the fragrance spe-cialist and owner. She gave me samples ofperfume filled gift bags. Next, I headed toGlady's Café' for lunch. Host/owner,Gladys Isles serves fresh shrimp, taposand large fruit flavored drinks. After lunchI headed to the Visitors Bureau for presen-tations from more islanders. GwendolynHarley is a doll maker and Lucia Henley, makes hard candy. I left them to catch aSea Plane from St. Thomas to St. Croix. The accommodations were provided byHotel on the Cay, an older 55 room hotellocated in the middle of ChristianstedHarbor. It has the only "in town" beach onSt. Croix. Transportation was providedby St. Croix Safari Tours. Ask for SweenyToussant.

Day 4: Breakfast was provided by Hotelon The Cay. After breakfast I headed tothe Roadside Pan Yard, a small local com-pany that makes drums. The drums aremade and tuned by hand. From there Iheaded for The Mahogany WoodworksGallery, where the owner gave a short tourof his wood gallery. From there I went toTurtles Deli for lunch. I visited severalcraft exhibits at the St. George BotanicalGardens hosted by local artists. CruzanTemptations by Laverne Bates servedhand made tarts, candies and cakes.Selah's fragrances, and botanicals havebeneficial and soothing properties.African Patchwork Quilts, are designedby Carmen Haywood.
