FIRST HOLY COMMUNION IN GLENCORRIB CHURCH NEXT WEEKEND: Next Sunday 26th May, 8 children from second class at Glencorrib & Kilroe

National Schools we will be celebrating their First Holy Communion at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Glencorrib. As always, it’s a parish

celebration. We encourage the boys and girls and their families to keep Sunday as special day for Jesus. Every Sunday of the year we celebrate the

Resurrection of Jesus and His promise of eternal life to each one of us. Please pray for the 8 boys and girls and their families. Cathal Hyland,

Harry Ramsay, Dean Garvey, Noah Heneghan, Ryan Gavin, Kayla Capone, Lucy O Connor

and Kelly Biggins. We wish to thank their teachers Orna Friel (Principal Glencorrib NS) and Eilish McDonagh (Principal Kilroe NS) for preparing the children for this special day in their lives.

We also wish to thank their parents, Fr. Vivian and everyone who is helping out.

JUST A THOUGHT: We are in the middle of the First Communion season. It’s delightful to see the enthusiasm with

which the little ones learn off their prayers, sing their hymns and perform their actions. And the class teacher remains a

central element in this process of handing on the faith. It’s not just a matter of imparting information. The teacher has to imbue the children with his or her own enthusiasm and

love for the faith. In the 2016 census the Shrule district showed the following

Religion Persons % of total

Catholic 382 89%

Other stated Religion 13 3%

Religion not stated 3 -

No Religion 34 8%

TOTAL 432

A recent review group stated that the sacraments risked

being turned into “social occasions” rather than moments of faith. “The bouncy castle rather than the tabernacle could soon become the significant focal point of the day”.

“I posted them on Facebook and they didn’t get any likes”

As we stand now, the schools are being asked to bear an unfair burden while the parents have opted for a passive role. Consequently, where many of the children are concerned, their Confirmation day will be their last day in Church. The passing on the faith is primarily the

responsibility of the home, supported by the parish and the school of course.

SHRULE GLENCORRIB GAA BORD NA NÓG: More info available @ shruleglencorribgaa.com On Wednesday evening, 15th May, Shrule/Glencorrib welcomed Mayo Gaels to the Shrule

Community Pitch and with both teams unbeaten, it was a winner takes all game in Group G (Shrule/Glencorrib, Mayo Gaels, Carras, The Neale, Davitts, Hollymount/Carramore). While there may have been some nerves beforehand, it was worth bearing in mind that many of the home

players had previously displayed their skills in no less a venue than Croke Park. The coaches, Alan, Stephen, David and Matthew had their team well prepared as they wasted no time in setting

about getting into their stride from the very first whistle. In what turned out to be a dominant display, Shrule Glencorrib ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of 4-21 to 4-3. The coaches and players deserve huge credit for the way they have applied and conducted themselves throughout

the spring league and there will be more big days ahead. Seeing our club finish top of our division should bring great pride to our community.

On Thursday, Shrule/Glencorrib U14s travelled north to take on a highly fancied Kilmovee Shamrocks in the semi final of

the Div 5 Cup. In what has been a rollercoaster league for the group, they were not going to go down without a fight. They played with great conviction and desire and can look

back on a Spring League campaign where the team gelled as a unit under great guidance from their coaches Evan and

Michael. The final scoreline was 7-14 to 3-09. Great numbers again attended training for the U10s 8s and 6s on Wednesday evening in Glencorrib-thanks to all who

continue to support their children and local club in this way. Aisling O'Sullivan, Secretary. Bord Na nÓg

JUST A THOUGHT: Doing the Prom during the week I noticed a young Mom trying to teach her 5

year old son to ride a bike. He had a child’s bike and asked his mother to hold on to the back of the bike for balance so he wouldn’t fall. He was managing pretty well, to such an extent that little

Jimmy’s mother unknown to him took her hands off the bike and he continued to cycle away balancing himself. Suddenly he looked back and became aware that Mom wasn’t actually holding

the bike, he got scared, screamed and crashed. She gently rescued him, gave him a quick hug, put him back on the bike and away he went. He wobbled a little but he was able to cycle on his own!

When you think about it there are two basic fundamental realities of the Gospel. The first is that God is incredibly loving, gentle, merciful, forgiving and always with us to help us “balance” the

wobbles of life. The second that every person is precious, special, important and talented: the young, the elderly, the strong, the weak, - no matter what our ethnic origin, culture, religion or occupation. Jesus’ prayer was “may they all be one”.

A problem arises for most of us in that we are afraid of “wobbling” and falling off the bike like little Jimmy.. We have a fear of failure, fear of not being loved, fear of death, fear of loneliness,

fear of no friends, fear of being destitute, etc. As a consequence we let our fear control us rather than learning to push on despite them. Thus we tend to limit how far and how fast we can go. It is important to put a finger on our fears and then to hear Jesus say - Do not be afraid, I am

with you every step of the way. Have a Good Week. Fr. Gerry Jennings, Salthill Parish

EXAM TIME Dear Parents, The exams of your children are to start soon. I know you are

all really anxious for your child to do well. But, please do remember, amongst the students who will be

sitting for the exams there is an artist, who doesn’t need to understand Math. There is an entrepreneur, who doesn’t care

about History or English literature. There is a musician, whose Chemistry marks won’t matter. There’s an athlete, whose physical fitness is more important than Physics. If your child

does get top marks, that’s great! But if he or she doesn’t, please don’t take away their self-confidence and dignity from

them. Tell them it’s OK, it’s just an exam! They are cut out for much bigger things in life. Tell them, no matter what they score, you love them and will not judge them.

Please do this, and when you do, watch your children conquer the world. One exam or a low mark won’t take away their

dreams and talent. And please, do not think that doctors and engineers are the only happy people in the world. What a nice message to send to kids before a big test! We

hope the parents who received this note took it to heart and supported their children to the fullest. This is a lesson we

could all stand to learn!

AREFD RESEARCH PROJECT THE MATER DEI CENTRE FOR CATHOLIC

EDUCATION has opened a survey which encourages everyone to join a conversation

on adult religious education and faith development in Ireland. See details below, including a link for the survey. They would

like as many people as possible to take part in the survey, so please circulate to parishioners

and any potentially interested parties.

Researchers at the Mater Dei Centre for Catholic Education (MDCCE) at Dublin City University are embarking on an exciting three-year project, funded by the Presentation Sisters North East

Province, which aims to explore the nature, scope and potential of religious education and faith development for adults in Ireland. The principal investigator is Dr. Gareth Byrne and the post-

doctoral researcher for this project is Dr. Bernadette Sweetman. It is hoped that the project will enhance public awareness of the great work already happening in communities, parishes and groups. Adult religious education and faith development in Ireland

has traditionally been conceived of as a process whereby faith communities / parishes provide talks or workshops often delivered by outside experts. Such input is often more focused on

those who already committed, and are actively involved in ministry. A range of possibilities which encourage adults generally to explore and deepen their faith experience and grow more fully into their faith community is needed.

Emerging forms of spirituality and popular piety continue to capture the adult imagination. A spiritual sensibility remains but there can be a deficit of religious language through which people

engage with each other in deepening their experience within a faith community. The AREFD project will focus on all these issues and seek to facilitate a re-energising of adult religious education and faith development in Ireland.

We, the researchers, are hoping that as many people take part in this project as possible. We are inviting all adults in Ireland to complete an online survey that will help us understand what

Irish adults think and feel about religious education and how we might best develop this in the future. The survey can be accessed at MDCCE AREFD Project<https://www.dcu.ie/materdei-centre-for-

catholic-education/Adult-Religious-Education-and-Faith-Development-Research> and will be open until Friday 14th June 2019. Please feel free to encourage your friends and colleagues to

participate. Thank you. Please note that all enquiries about the AREFD project should be forwarded directly to Dr.

Bernadette Sweetman at: [email protected] or 01 8842003
