Thought for the Week At OPPS we see the value of ourselves, each

This is a ‘friendly reminder’ regarding the
school’s policies on appropriate use of social
media and the appropriate channels should
you wish to make a complaint about the
school.
We are very much aware that cyber safety is a
concern that not only affects students. Staff
members are also at risk of being defamed or
purposely targeted by a disgruntled family
member using social media tools such as
Facebook.
This is not a new concept; social media is
simply providing another forum in which
parents and members of the school
community may engage in disrespectful,
harassing, threatening or bullying behaviour.
We ask that you be mindful of this and
understand that in many cases, when you hear
or read of a particular version of events, you
may not be fully aware of all the
circumstances relevant to those events.
The Department of Education and Training
(DET) shares the concerns of principals and
teachers and acknowledges that this type of
behaviour is unacceptable and will not be
tolerated. This is confirmed in the DET Dignity
and Respect Statement: see:
http://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/edulibrary/pu
blic/schacc/dignityrespectstatement.pdf.

In some cases disrespectful, harassing,
threatening or bullying behaviour may be
considered a criminal offence under State
and/or Federal law. Oak Park Primary School
does not tolerate bullying of any kind and this
includes cyberbullying. Where there is a
reasonable belief that illegal activity may have
occurred, the suspected activity may be
reported to the police.
We do encourage parents / guardians to
contact the School to discuss any matters that
relate to your child / children’s education,
safety, health and wellbeing. However, this
should be done by contacting the school and
arranging a meeting with the appropriate staff
at a mutually convenient time and place. We
request that you follow the Department and
our School policies and procedures.

policy is available at:

School Wide Positive
Behaviours
A working party was formed at the start of this
year to investigate an initiative used in some
schools called ‘School Wide Positive
Behaviours’ (SWPB).
School Wide Positive Behaviours is a proactive
approach that relates closely to a school’s
values and identifies the behaviours that we
want to see (rather than those that we don’t
want to see). A matrix is drawn up showing
values, behaviours and the areas associated
with the school where these can be
demonstrated. See below for a sample matrix
used at one school.
It is most effective when implemented as a
whole school approach (including parents and
staff) to creating an environment which
encourages effective learning through the
development of a positive, calm and
welcoming atmosphere. We encourage
positive feedback to students often and
endeavour to teach students how to behave
appropriately. We recognise that learning
social skills and socially acceptable behaviours
is a process, which everybody moves through
at a different pace. Learning appropriate
social skills is seen in the same light as learning
how to read or complete maths. Some people
need more assistance in some areas and less
in others.
The SWPB working party comprises staff
members and a parent representative. We
have been looking at our current school values
(Resilience, Respect, Responsibility, Empathy,
Harmony) and believe that these should be
narrowed down to the first three only – ‘The
Three R’s’. We believe the draft definitions of
Resilience, Respect and Responsibility we have
been working on, adequately cover the other
two original values.
Further work is being done to refine these
definitions and when complete, further
community input will be sought.

Compass
A reminder to all families, that at Oak Park
Primary School, our main form of
communication is via Compass. All families
have been given a username and password to
sign in and access Compass.
At Oak Park Primary School we have a
commitment to reduce the amount of paper
wastage, and now have quite a few forms of
communication, with COMPASS our main one.
Compass: Please don’t hesitate to email Sally
or Fran if you are having issues, or are unaware
how to access.

Slapped Cheek
SLAPPED CHEEK INFECTION
We have been informed that one of our students has contracted what is commonly
known as ‘slapped cheek’ infection.
‘Slapped cheek’ infection is a mild, self-limiting
infection that occurs mainly among young children, with the majority of cases occurring in
Winter and Spring. The most obvious feature of
the illness is a bright red flush on the face and a rash on the body, although some persons do
not have any symptoms at all. Adults may experience joint pains and swelling.
People who are infected are most contagious before the outbreak of the rash.
When an outbreak of ‘slapped cheek’ disease
occurs in a school, as well as advising the general school population, Principals are asked to advise the following persons
specifically:
(a) parents, members of staff or children who are immune suppressed or have
chronic haemolytic disorders. These
people should avoid contact with

potentially infectious persons, and should seek further advice from their doctor.
(b) any female who is pregnant needs to be advised of the potential for
acquiring the infection and of a potential risk to the foetus. These people
should also contact their doctor.
The best control measures for dealing with ‘slapped cheek’ is to emphasise the need for
strict hygiene. Regular washing of hands and the use of disposable tissues are seen to be
very useful measures for helping to control the disease.
Lost Property
We have a lost property rack with many bomber jackets and rugby tops being left
behind, or just thrown on the school grounds at lunchtime and recess, then forgotten.
Unfortunately many items are unnamed, which means you most likely won’t get these
returned.
I also cannot believe how many lunch boxes, plastic containers and drink bottles we have in our lost property. The box is overflowing. These
containers will be thrown out within a week if they are not claimed.

Walk Safely to School Tomorrow - Friday 20th May is Walk Safely to
School Day! Now in its 17th year, National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event when
all Primary School children will be encouraged
to walk and commute safely to school. Walk to School Safely Day is an initiative that is
designed to:
• Re-enforce safe pedestrian behaviour amongst children.
• Promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits
at an early age. • Help children develop the vital road-
crossing skills they will need, as they
become mature pedestrians.
• Reduce car dependency habits that
are being created at an early age. • Reduce the level of air pollution
created by motor vehicles.
We hope you can all join us by safely walking
to school on Friday 20th March!

The Succulent Saga
Thank you to the families who donated cactus and succulent cuttings to the 5/6 area.
Over 150 succulents have been transplanted
into seed trays, and fingers crosses, all will take
hold.
We are now looking for old containers to plant
them in. Items we would love to receive
include unusually shaped glass jars (jam, for
example), used glass containers that once
contained candles, tin condiment containers
(e.g. mustard etc)
**We are also trying to collect 50 old vinyl
records
Thank you for your continued support
