The words we choose to say are often
determined by the environment we are in and
the people we are with. Good communicators
understand that we need to choose language
that is appropriate to the situation. If you are
speaking to your elderly aunt, you will probably
use language different from that chosen to
speak with your best friend. The language you
use at a football match is likely to be different
from that used in church. In my case, very
different.
Being able to work out what language is
appropriate in a range of circumstances is
important. We need to be aware of the needs
of those around us and communicate in the
best way possible.
At home, discuss with your children the correct
way to speak to the different people in your
household and to relatives and friends. Get
them to give you examples of how they might
introduce themselves to Mr Turnbull the Prime
Minister and how they would introduce
themselves to a new child who has moved in
next door. Talk about how to speak
respectfully no matter what the situation.

Respectful relationships
A couple of useful resources have been
added to the school’s website recently. They
both relate to developing respectful
relationships at school. One is called ‘Social
Media and Your School’ and the other is our
‘Statement of Values’. Please look under
‘Parent Information’ and then ‘Respectful
Relationships’.
Lost Property
We have a lost property rack with many
bomber jackets and rugby tops being left
behind, or just thrown on the school grounds at
lunchtime and recess, then forgotten.
Unfortunately many items are unnamed, which
means you most likely won’t get these
returned.
I also cannot believe how many lunch boxes,
plastic containers and drink bottles we have in
our lost property. The box is overflowing. These
containers will be thrown out within a week if
they are not claimed.

Reports
Staff members are very busy at present writing
the June Reports for each student in their
classes. This is a very complex duty and
teachers try very hard to write full, fair and
comprehensive reports within the guidelines
and constraints of DET guidelines and the
COMPASS reporting program.
As a written report cannot convey all the
necessary information it is crucially important
that parents and students attend the
Parent/Teacher/Student Meeting Day on
Tuesday June 21st (alternative times can be
negotiated if you can’t make this day).
This day is an ‘alteration to school hours’ day
and students are marked present when they
attend the Interview with their parents. Please
note there will be no school for children on this
day – except when they attend the
Parent/Teacher/Student meeting.
Reports will be sent home on Friday June 17th
to give parents the opportunity to read them
prior to the meetings.

“A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a
sack of corn across a river. He has a
rowboat which can only carry him and one
other thing.
If the fox and the chicken are left together,
the fox will eat the chicken.
If the chicken and the corn are left

How does the man do it?”

The Succulent Saga
Thank you to the families who donated cactus
and succulent cuttings to the 5/6 area. Over
150 succulents have been transplanted into
seed trays, and fingers crosses, all will take
hold. We are now looking for old containers
to plant them in. Items we would love to
receive include unusually shaped glass jars
(jam, for example), used glass containers that
once contained candles, tin condiment
containers (e.g. mustard etc)
**We are also trying to collect 50 old vinyl
records
Thank you for your continued support

Cross Country
The weather today was deemed as a safety
hazard as there may be isolated thunderstorms
later, so unfortunately cross country has been
cancelled for today. The proposed new date is
next Thursday the 2nd June. This will be
confirmed as soon as possible.

Oak Park Pool Proposal
http://www.moreland.vic.gov.au/about-
us/news-and-publications/budget-and-
financial-plan/proposed-budget-2016-17/
Council is proposing to fund the start of
reconstruction works at Oak Park pool in the
current proposed budget. The upgraded
facility will include an upgrade to all the pools,
new waterslides and water play area, a gym
and rooms for fitness classes, which will
operate all year round, and new clubrooms.
It's a fabulous project but at the moment
some councilors are thinking of redirecting
funds to other projects in other parts of
Moreland. They rarely hear form the quiet end
of Moreland and many other residents are
putting in submissions saying money should be
spent elsewhere e.g. in Coburg and Brunswick.
If we want money spent up this end we need
to be a bit noisy too.
If you have two minutes you could click on the
link above and do a very quick submission in

the online form about why spending rate
payers money at Oak Park pool is a good thing
(one sentence is enough). Some examples:
• It is in dire need of an upgrade and
hasn't been touched since you were a
kid.
• Your kids enjoy using the facilities but
they really need improvements
• Heaps of people use it e.g. school
swimming carnivals
• You're excited about the upgrade,
especially the new gym and/or
clubrooms and thank council for
including the funding in the proposed
budget
• Kids and teenagers need fun active
things to do
• Increase in heat waves and people
need places to escape the heat
Submissions close 5pm today!
A Day in May
A very special thank you from Alexander’s
Mum……
“I wanted to write to say how moved I was by
the overwhelming’ school response to
yesterdays ‘A Day in May’. As you know it is a
cause that is close to our hearts and we had
lots of involvement with Challenge while
Alexander’s brother Vaughan was sick.
This particular fundraiser is designed to bring
music to the lives of children experiencing
cancer.
I can remember vividly how much Vaughan
responded to music when he was so weak, he
could barely lift his head off my shoulder.
Music made such a difference, it’s hard to
paint an accurate picture.
Our house was abuzz this morning with talk
about this special day, and although most of
the children at school, would have viewed it as
a ‘fun, out of uniform day’, we knew that it was
more than that. Today I had the benefit of
helping with the cupcakes and Remembrance
Wall Activities. I was overwhelmed to see the
yellow, the Rockstars and most of all - the
names of all the people touched by cancer.
One teacher commented to me yesterday
that they thought the children wouldn’t know
anyone and the idea was weird. At the time I
felt that I had to defend the idea but today I
realized that it wasn’t necessary. All those
names and all those flowers showed me that
there are very few families at our school who
are untouched by this horrible disease. Today
they could come together to share that and
as one of the unluckiest family’s, I can honestly
say it was beautiful.
Alexander was proud to show me the flower
he had coloured for his little brother.
I know that it is often easy for people to
complain, criticise and condemn others. I just
want to say Thank You……In our small lives
today, it’s made a lovely difference.
Have a wonderful day and thank you for
taking care of our young man…..

Sustainability
We were recently very fortunate to be donated two
pear trees by Christian Tenace from Direct Plants
Greenvale. This is a fantastic beginning to what will be
our orchard. A big thanks to Marcelle Coory for
organising this with Christian as well. If you do need
fruit trees, native plants or anything else for your
garden Direct Plants Greenvale would be a great place
to keep in mind and I’m sure if you were stopping by
and mentioned that you were connected with Oak Park
Primary, Christian will be able to look after you! Contact

Japanese
This term the Foundation to Year 4 students have been exploring the cultural themes associated with their film review
of Ponyo, of which they conducted in term 1. The Ponyo film review involved watching the film once, with a great deal
of discussion and discovery of Japanese people, traditions and culture. Amongst many other activities, the students
have been working towards the completion of a Ponyo Ocean Mural. Each student is making a contribution to the mural
to help create and identify our space as a Japanese room. The students are looking forward to seeing their ideas and
ownership over this collaborative project come into fruition. Term 2 has seen a further extrapolation of the themes and
culture from Ponyo; with a differentiation throughout the year levels. Please see below some of the activities the
students have been enjoying. I’m sure they will appreciate you asking about these tasks and seeing some of the
Japanese language they’ve been learning☺ A huge thank-you to the parents and carers who have provided
encouragement and support for the new program. For further information about the 2016 OPPS Japanese Program re-
engagement objectives; and for a bit of background about me (Jeshka Sensei), including my working history with leading
and teaching Japanese from Foundation – Yr 12, living and working in Japan and successes with designing, creating and
implementing LOTE Re-Engagement Programs – please see the updated school website Japanese Page. どうもあどうもあどうもあどうもありがとうりがとうりがとうりがとう (with thanks and appreciation), Jessica Cullinan.
